You absolutely NAILED this video. The 6D is still my favorite camera, even over my 1D. I have over 158k on my shutter already. I am thinking about an R6, but maybe just another used 6D, not sure yet. But that 6D is just soooo dam good! I recently tried a 6Dmkii, and the image quality wasn't as good as the original so I returned it.

Thank you! Around 2016 I bought three heavily used 6D’s to do a single video project where I needed many angles, and each of those bodies wound up having over 300k shutter actuations. They just WORKED 😂 I sold them after project but they left a real soft spot for them with me. the 6D I purchased recently which was featured in this video was almost completely unused, the guy bought it new eight years ago and never learned to use it, it had like 1,000 actuations- so basically I plan to have it forever. I just started noticing that I would get sketched out carrying my R6 with a $2,700 lens from the salon down an alley to my car at night so I decided to get the cheapest setup I could for work and to be completely honest I don’t even miss bringing the R6 to shoot haircuts. If I want to shoot action of any kind or if I want to set up to talk to the camera for a video, then I grab the R6.

I have both these cameras, so I clicked your video. Then I saw you did hair, and as a photographer for 37 years I thought oh great a hairdresser is gonna give me a photography lesson. LOL, Kudos my friend. You knocked it out of the park! You're a great speaker and you explained everything very well. Better than I explain things. So thats what I get for assuming! Great job, I love both of these cameras. I shoot weddings with the R6 and my wife shoots with the 6D. You're correct quality is very close. With the exception of the much newer processor in the R6 and the much better low light quality you get from the R6, shooting weddings that's very important. So if you ever quit doing hair I could use another photographer on staff! Never again will I pre-judge a video! Thanks again for the great job, and I subscribed to your channel. I just started a KZfaq channel in Feb this year, and I am learning audio and video. Having a background as a photographer helped a lot with lighting, video took me a while. I hate my first month of videos, but I'm slowly getting there now. Thanks again for the great review!

Thank you! I’ve subscribed to your channel! I didn’t focus too much on the differences in image quality with this video because my main audience is hairdressers who don’t understand things like dynamic range, however since recording this I’ve begun to find a new appreciation for the vibe of the older sensors- in fact I basically donated this 6D to my salon for my co workers to use and I’ve switched to a 5D classic for my “fun” work (I’ve got a video about that one, too 😉). It’s hard to articulate but the modern sensor seems to coddle a poor understanding of lighting and allows detail to be captured in cases where an older sensor would lose it, so it’s like even when light is of poor quality you can see what the picture is of so there’s not as much incentive to learn about lighting. With my 5D classic (and to a lesser extent with the 6D) if the light is bad the picture is BAD and if the light is good the picture is GOOD.

Workhorse is the best compliment I can give the 6D. It does what you tell it everytime. Do what you're supposed to do, the 6D will reward. I have had mine used coming on 2 years. I had a 77D, SL2, 7D before just to name 3. Even had an AE-1 as an old film camera. The 6D is light, tough, and the image quality is great. I refuse to the pay the ransom for any new camera. I paid 400-ish for this camera too. It will never leave unless something stupid better for the money exceeds it, then just maybe I will trade, but even still it would have to be extraordinary. I have shot Nikon, Pentax, Panasonic, Sony, Olympus, and of course currently Canon. I just added the Canon 1D-mk.4 as my current crop sensor camera. Insane build, capable pro body of time gone by. Got for the same money as the 6D. Good condition, still has at least 4/5ths shutter life yet if not more. Truth be told it is the choices you make. And lastly, the joy of the process, and the output you create. I am not brand myopic. Canon just is so easy. EF glass still around new, and used. 3rd party support still excellent. Was considering a D3 Nikon, but staying in the system. Looking at a 1Ds-mk.3 used. Last camera I will ever buy. Even that is provisional. But if the price, and condition is sensible, I am set on video. Stills is where currently Canon floats my boat. Your mileage may vary.

Thank you for the great video. I come from the film era and I worked as a wedding/social photographer until 2014. My two DSLR bodies were a pair of 5D MkI (classic). I was impressed with their image quality and complained about their slow processing speed shooting RAW+JPG, poor screen quality, poor AF in low light and usable ISO only up to 800 and exceptionally 1600. Then I knew the 6D (I was not working anymore as a pro photographer). Since then, I´m delighted with it´s image quality, dynamic range and everything I missed in my 5D. I enjoy really very much using my good old 6D very often for my personal purpose as a hobby. If I needed to upgrade my 6D I´d buy an R8, not an R6, mainly because of it´s better sensor and image quality, having nowadays one of the best IQ/price ratios in the market (2023). I have to say that my budget is very limited, otherwise I´d buy an R3 😷.What do you think about the R8? Thank you very much.
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair 8 ай бұрын
I was actually super excited about the R8 when I saw it advertised, but after it was released I sobered up as soon as it came to seriously considering buying it. I decided I probably won’t end up owning it. The R6 has better ergonomics, I’ve owned an RP which has the same form factor as the R8 and those back buttons are very awkwardly mashed way over to the far right edge. Also the thumb wheel on the back of a camera is such a deeply rooted muscle memory for me to use, I never felt connected to my RP or EOS R because of that lacking wheel. In fact both of those cameras (I imagine also the R8) had a very unintuitive user experience which required a lot of looking at menus and touching the screen to navigate- which is perfectly fine for studio work but if I’m trying to react to a changing scene I want to use muscle memory and tactile feedback- not a touch screen menu, to adjust the camera on the fly. Actually I didn’t mention this in this video, but those older canons (5D and 6D series, probably others, maybe 7D) having buttons on top in a straight row made for very easy and quickly familiar use, to where the RF bodies all feel like the top buttons were randomly slapped all over the top of the camera. Even now after using RF cameras since the very beginning of them, I need to look at the camera to use any top button with certainty. I can navigate my 5D classic blindfolded. Anyways, I’m going to be very very picky with any future camera purchases about this tactile experience and menu-free navigation, because I’ve learned that it means more to me than megapixels or dynamic range.

Yep. That's pretty much right. For studio portraiture, there's absolutely difference between a 6D and a R6. The 6D is a _much better_ deal. Pair that with the plastic wonder lens, the EF 50mm f1.7. Take the money saved and spend it on what's truly important - lighting. I'd suggest a Godox AD-100 and the Godox X2-Tc remote. Buy a couple of cheap light stands and umbrella softbox. Jig up some additional ways to hold Dollar Tree $0.99 white foam core boards for reflectors. This is all you'd need for very flattering and detailed clamshell style lighting. Go for butterfly style lighting for that old time 40's and 50's glam Hollywood look. This whole kit above - camera, lens, lighting equipment should run for less than $1k.

Nice. I’m considering getting one of those. This 6D in the video here doesn’t belong to me, I bought it for my co workers to keep at the salon, but I personally bounce between this R6 and a 5D classic for my own daily carry. Those two cameras are on very far ends of the spectrum in every way, so I’ve been thinking of getting something that sits in between the two. Initially I thought 6D but it’s basically a 5D classic with beefier AF points and slightly higher resolution, however the 6Dii adds a flippy screen and focus tracking over the 6D, making it sit closer to the middle of my 5D and R6. I just hope the 6Dii still retains some of those “canon magic colors” that their early DSLR’s had.

question: if I have 6D since its released on 2012, and limited $ to spend for upgrade, is it worth upgrading to R6 or spend the same $ on on two good EF lens for my 6D
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair 2 жыл бұрын
If I wasn’t doing any video work where I needed a flippy screen and focus tracking, and if I wasn’t shooting action at all, I’d be as happy with the 6D as I would be with the R6. If you feel like your 6D isn’t snappy enough in the focus department or burst rate, like you’re missing shots because of it, I’d go with R6, but if that’s not a problem and you’re wondering if image quality alone is worth the difference in price I believe it is not. I suppose another big factor is how interested in RF glass you are- I absolutely love my RF 70-200 and my RF 16mm F2.8 because they’re both tiny for what they are, but I still use a few Sigma EF lenses because there’s just no RF glass that can do what they do. If you were interested in a specific RF lens or two then of course it makes sense to jump to RF, but if speed isn’t necessary you might be happier with an RP as a gateway to explore RF lenses

Great video. I'm only a hobbyist. I don't want and don't need to spend too much money in photography, so i buy cheapo Canon cameras and lenses. I have a small collection of vintage manual lenses too. Yesterday i bought a Canon 6D with a battery grip and the 50mm 1.8 for just $115usd. That was cheap! BUT... It have 120.000 actuations, it have marks and scratches, and the rubber it's sticky and gooey and its separating from the body. The buttons are mushy, without good tactile feel. The camera is in a bad shape really. But works perfectly fine, no signs of problems of any kind. So, my project now is restore the camera, I'll buy all flaps doors and rubber from China, i will clean the body, etc. Regarding manual lenses, you can buy adaptors with AF chip and the 6D and other Canon DSLRs will confirm focus in the viewfinder. I always select central point only, when I nail the focus it becomes red and blinking

Nice. I totally agree. Since I recorded this video I’ve been using my R6 less and less, and I actually picked up a 5D classic about a year ago- which was totally a gateway into some forgotten treasures and it completely changed my relationship with photography. Now I’ve sold off every RF lens I had and have switched to some good old classic EF’s for a fraction of the price. Like the EF 28mm F1.8 USM is a lens I never would have thought to put on my R6 but it’s such a great lens on the 5D. I shoot DAILY now that I have a fun simple old canon with nice JPEGs and cheap lenses, where I only shot for work when I was using thousands of dollars worth of gear and processing every image myself. The 6D I showed in this video was donated to my salon shortly after this recording, but I’ve been seeing them hitting the $250 range in fair condition and I’m strongly considering getting one as a daily carry since my 5D classic has been falling short lately as the sun sets half way through the day and it struggles to focus in low light (and tops out at 1600 ISO).

I think for shooting the multi cam drums thing like you’re doing (great content, btw, I subscribed 🤘) you could totally buy two or three used 6D bodies with cheaper used primes (even like manual focus Rokinon for CHEAP) to cover your angles. A few years ago I produced like 30 hours of haircutting videos for a paywalled website and what I did was start buying used 6D’s for dirt cheap then placing them all around the haircut. Similar to a drummer being stationary, a haircut doesn’t move, so monitoring and live auto focus are nice but aren’t absolutely crucial. Get a mannequin to stand in for you where you’d sit, and light/focus on that then just trust that you did it right while you play 😂

I think you'll find (if you look hard enough and know what to look for) that the new R6 trumps the older 6D (let alone the mark II version) in dynamic range and high ISO performance (and also AF speed, coverage and accuracy). Is it worth 6x the price? Probably not. Not to mention size and weight, 2 things that are important to working pros who are dragging a camera around all day, every day. Silent shutter via the electronic shutter on the R6 is also a blessing in a lot of cases - no more annoying shutter clunk that you had with your 6D etc. This alone can unsettle a client and make them uncomfortable and less natural in front of your camera.
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair Жыл бұрын
Agreed on all points. I should have made my own use and needs more clear in the video, but I shoot people saying “cheese” in a well lit salon after their haircut so dynamic range and high ISO is of negligible importance for me (and therefore I didn’t go deeply into that). Usually when I make these videos about cameras or lenses I forget that photographers might see them, as my typical audience is barbers and hairstylists looking for a very basic and practical introduction to photographic information. I’ve found with the R6 that shadow recovery is absolutely insanely good while with the 6D it’s not horrendous but it’s nothing to write home about. I like the way the 6D handles colors more than the R6 though (see the comparison photos at 2:38 and notice the small OOF blue light renders more purple on the R6- same settings, WB, and same picture style).

@@andrewdoeshair yes, I get that you make this review, and base it on your needs as a photographer and that is perfectly fine imho. You are not the first to say this about the R6 (in fact, the entire mirrorless Canon colour systems) being inferior to earlier Canon DSLRs. I am curious, have you tried alternate RAW software to Lighroom? lightroom has never been good with Canon colours imho - DPP and C1 Pro do much better jobs.

This is portraiture. Doing it right, consistently and in production really means studio portraiture with controlled lighting. The R6 has no advantage in such environment, least of all a silent shutter when the strobe goes off anyways. Also, the last thing you want is to struggle for that 14 stops of scene dynamic range. The goal is to flatter and record with detail. The idea is for that 6 stops of scene dynamic to give definition and 3D pop. No, the 6D is precisely right. For this, a 6D, standard prime lens, a good quality strobe kit and lighting modifiers are well under $1k USD. Get a bit of practice with this and the JPGs will be more than good enough to use straight out of camera; no need to post process. Time is money. This will give much superior photos than a R6 - in that the camera body itself is $2k USD.

“The best camera for a barbershop” :))) This is definitely a sign of having to much time. What on earth is so difficult to do some portraits in such a place. Even a new iPhone can make amazing portraits in the right light. Where do you show these pics? Art gallery? Almost every camera made in the last 7-8 years is perfect. With the right lens and light.

As a hobbyist and Canon fan boy for 10 yrs, I never felt the need of spending 2k + for features that wouldn’t necessarily change my photography. It just doesn’t make sense to me except probably the ownership pride that most people are happy with. I even see many pros using dslrs today and producing great results, so why should I spend hard earned cash??? 😅

This camera was a bit of a lesson learned for me. I did justify the purchase when it was $2,600 because I needed the flippy screen and my kids were getting to that age where I couldn’t count on them to sit still and say cheese, and I don’t necessarily regret the purchase because it’s meant some wonderful images of my kids that I would have missed with my 5D or 6D. However, as tech tends to do, this camera dropped in value crazy fast, and just yesterday I saw a brand new R6 marked down to $1,500. I’m using this thing until the shutter falls off, and once that happens I’ll just find another one used. No more new cameras for me.

Why is it that the mirrorless are more for repairs than the dslrs at almost all canon service centres. And the repairs on the mirrorless cost a bomb. I have seen so many r and r6 bodies for repairs. One of my fellow photographers spent 750 dollars on sensor.

Mirrorless cameras are better at shooting video than DSLRs, so people think the former can replace a camcorder, when it really cant. They shoot too much video with these cameras, so they overheat and break down.

How about dynamic range?
@andrewdoeshair
@andrewdoeshair 2 жыл бұрын
I should have done a dynamic range test when I had both cameras in my possession. I didn’t, because for what I shoot I don’t need remarkable dynamic range so I didn’t think to do it. I’m almost positive the R6 would kill the 6D as far as dynamic range, but I don’t know if it would be a blatantly obvious difference that you’d see in most cases or if it would be a subtle difference that only showed only during sort of fringe scenarios with extreme contrast.

Agreed. I wasn’t looking at images much during this comparison but later found that the 6D has way nicer colors- more stylized and attractive. I rarely grab my R6 for photos anymore and instead reach for my 5D classic or 6D. I just keep the R6 around for when I need a fast burst rate or a flippy screen.

Smartphones are pretty good these days for most things. If you want a dedicated camera 35mm still photography as far as for online an old Canon 30D and a 50mm lens would do all you need to play around with 35mm format. First, you DO NOT need high resolution. To keep in in perspective and HD TV is only 2 megabytes. Small files are for online. When buying used 35mm cameras look for refurbished on line at the manufacturers site. Got a great deal a few years back on an 80D. But an iphone can do nice video. The original 6D is a nice camera quite good enough and not too dissimilar to the R6. Chief benefit to the original 6D, LOTS of good lenses for less money. R6 newer better focus better video. The future is mirrorless. I however, find DSLR's more cost effective.

@@kamilnowak9750 Thats actually doable. You need to get a Beastgrip frame and a Beastgrip DOF Adapter to use EF mount lenses on your phone though and I don't think it uses the electronics so it's set wide open and no auto focus. If you don't mind using an EF - Sony E adapter you can get DOF adapters from Ulanzi or Fotorgear as theirs use E mount lenses

I haven’t done many side by side comparisons between the two but after using both for a while I feel like (at least for JPEGs) the 6D has more attractive colors and sort of chalky blacks- it kind of has a “vibe” if you will. The R6 has better dynamic range and the shadows/highlights don’t get as mushed up, and I feel like the blues shift more toward magenta than teal compared to the 6D (which tends to feel a little bit more teal/orange). Again, though, this isn’t based on a side by side comparison but just based on occasionally shooting something with the 6D and it feeling a little teal/orange with mushed up black, or shooting something with the R6 and feeling like I’m seeing more purple and magenta than I’d expected to but rarely feeling like the shadows got crushed together.
