Good commentary Joe. The 300 2.8 is an awesome lens. I have owned the EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II since it was launched and had great results with my Canon 5d M3. Having not done any photography since 2020, I’m finding my kit is now antique due to tech advances. So I’m after an upgrade body. But don’t want to spend a load of money. So I’ve been looking at the EOS R7 against a EOS-1D X Mark II. Your review indicates that the R7 may be worth a go with the 300 particularly with the massive tech advancement. However I’m finding very few people reviewing the combo to gain an opinion before I choose a new EOS body. So good call. Thanks again.

Thank you for the video. I proudly own the version II of this milestone telephoto lens which is one of the finest glasses for Canon cameras. I use it with 1D Mark IV or 5D Mark III always with 2x version III converter. Nothing like it. Yes, I use this heavy combo on a sturdy tripod or monopod for static subjects. For bird flight shots; I use 7D + EF 400mm f/5.6L. Not interested in mirrorless cameras; neither do I deem it indispensable for my wildlife photography. My pro DSLR bodies have tons of shutter life remaining and I’m not in favor of throwing out anything that is working in good condition. I’m a hobbyist wildlife photographer; this lens serves my purposes very well. This is my darling lens.

I bought this lens when it first came out back in 1987! I love it so much that I have never upgraded it and now adapt it on my Nikon Z9 with the Fringer adapter! It is even better today because of the extreme power that the Z9 delivers to the focus motors! All the focus modes work fantastically even the 3D tracking! Plus it also works with my EF 1.4 and 2x converters! The only negative is that it is not exactly quiet but nor was a DSLR back in the day!😂 My only fear is that the motors are working so hard that they will soon call it a day!😂. 👍🏾🙏🏾. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇸🇪🇹🇹

I have this lens coupled with my r6 mk1.. The images are super clean with focus spot on... only issue is with weight that needs to be carried on that long hikes...

Great video, I appreciate how you share info that no one else does! I recently picked up an EOS R, had to shoot sports through plexiglass with a 300mm f/4 L IS, and the EOS R simply refused to accurately focus, even on static subjects! The same lens worked much better on a DSLR tho, and you were the only youtuber who had shared that you had a similar issue. So that means your videos are top priority for me, cheers!

whats your opinion of the 2x on the 300 for sharpness ? I am sporting the 2x mk3 on the 300 mk2
