I like how Gene gets Kari involved in these videos as a layperson on the topic and then starts explaining the different features of the cameras. Also liked it when Gene taught Kari how to use Davinci Resolve in one of the previous videos. Besides, it also gives a different take on the review, maybe a bit of a more unbiased one, because Kari is choosing based on the features that she prefers rather than the brand that she prefers.

R7 is way better…….on top of being a badass photo camera as well lmao. No comparison. IMO

Great job on the tests and analysis. I assumed they would be relatively similar, but the Canon did a bit better than expected! That 30mbps encoding option on the Sony sounds appealing. It's a challenge saving projects these days so I often use 8-bit 4:2:0 h.265 hevc on an Atomos Ninja V when indoors because I don't need to adjust much in post. I'm actually using two Canon M6ii cameras right now for my videos, but if I can ever afford it I'm leaning towards a full FX30 dual body kit. That might change if Canon opens up their mount to 3rd party lens makers like Sigma and Tamron.

I got my FX30 about a month ago, and coming from the GH4 it is a world of difference. The autofocus, the dynamic range, the color, its an incredible camera for $1800, especially matched with the 18-35

Canon R7 is best as a Hybrid camera. Canon need more RFs lens with fast aperture. Best within 1500usd. It will be nice if it comes under 1400usd.

Great video PT. Love the comparison and insights. Purchased R7 plus EF lens adapter a few weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. For its price it shouldn't be this good, It's surpassed my expectations, but then again I haven't upgraded my camera since 2015. Also acquired a Lumix S5, and have to say, the dynamic range and stabilisation is truly awesome on that. Camera manufacturers have picked up their game in the past 2 years =)

I bought the R7, always shot with Canon, but the need to always have adapters and large, expensive lenses is the thing that made me return it and get the fx30, and I do not regret it. There are some great, fast, small, and inexpensive lenses for the Sony, and thats just not as true with the Canon, not to mention their whole thing with banning 3rd party lenses for rf

The lines are blurring. Great comparison, but as someone who has invested in sony crop last 3 years, I think the canon had the edge in a lot of scenarios. Its annoying as outside of in the studio, lack of stabilisation means I seldom take video out and about on my Sony which sucks. The ibis on the r7 looks real good. I've always liked the canon look, but features of the sony, now its even more tough lol. Thanks for the comparison dude.

For Canon, get the Visioncolor custom color profile and you won't have to grade much, it desaturates just enough to uncrush the blacks. Saves so much time and looks great.

Very interesting! I’ve used Sony NEX/ a cameras since 2012 and I like them but just hate the colors and overall darker look in mixed light/ natural lights. The FX30 looks awesome in reviews but this was the first time I really saw a comparison to a Canon camera and again I like the Canon color and ease of use. However here in Norway both the FX30 and R7 are ca 2200$ body-only but the Canon RP with kit lens costs only ca 1200$ and I wonder if crop sensor is worth it… compared to the RP with kit lens (latest firmware) and some small Samyang lenses that are smaller than some crop lenses. I think for the money I rather go fullframe in HD over crop and 4K. For social media that’s still fine.

Personally I am looking at the Canon R7, Canon R6 Mark 2 and Two Sony A74's as I do photography both Street photography and Portraits. I am currently using the Nikon D5500 which is a beast of a camera. For street photography and street portraits

We need more cameras in the is price bracket included. Literally just got an S5 and will be selling my a74 and a7c. Cannot fathom that the fx30 or r7 would beat the s5 or compete price wise It's so much more focused for video work than these two. Love your stuff but would love you to revisit this camera system. Except the micro hdmi. That's utter pants x

Great comparison video... I agree FX30 has an excellent Auto Focus. It is a must have. That's why I pre-ordered it since I am a Sony user and invested on lenses. I think I'd probably get the FX30. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about it since I currently shoot a Lumix S5 and it's leaving my wanting more. The third party lens option just isn't really there for Panasonic, and I kind of want the ability to go out and buy something like a Viltrox 33mm f1.4 or something to test some different focal lengths. I have a few EF lenses for Canon and I could get an adapter for the R7, but I think the FX30 would be more useful too. Especially with the autofocus.

I've always been a canon shooter for years, but recently with my job I had to shoot on a Sony a lot and honestly, they are both fantastic camera Brands. both do have drawbacks but as far as picture quality, they are really on Par. it all depends on which brand you want to invest in more when you start. its always fun seeing the competition of canon Vs. Sony when they come out with new cameras that have basically the same specs. awesome detailed video Gene!

Hopefully the Canon R7 has a firmware update where it gets 10 bit in all picture profiles instead of in the C-Log profile especially with the release of the Fuji S-20

I feel like you under sold the Sony stabilization in the beginning. I own the FX30, and it has standard stabilization and active stabilization. The active stab, although with a crop, works really well for handheld shooting in my experience. Sony is not know for their stabilization, but they did a good job with the FX30's active stab IMO.

I think the FX30 is good for a B/C/Gimbal Camera but without a viewfinder it would never replace my A-Camera.

You sold me on a Sony FX30 and I got it with a Tamron 11-20mm f2.8 lens, I want the Sony 11mm f1.8 in the future though since for real estate I rarely use the 20mm Gyroflow in DaVinci Resolve is the Sony's stabilization app, I can do everything in DR!

In regard to the number of lenses, I think it's a bit of a myth at this point that Canon has more lenses than Sony. I was an early adopter for mirrorless (coming to Sony from Canon), and I still remember the old days when there were gaps everywhere in the lineup (I remember being on a waiting list for the Zeiss 85mm back in the day so that I wouldn't have to adapt my Canon 85mm all the time). Even for me, I still remember that feeling of there not being a lot of lenses out there. But the times have changed. A quick query on B&H shows 222 new EF/EF-S lenses listed vs. 364 E/FE lenses. While I would agree Canon has released more EF lenses over time, that number is mostly padded by old versions of lenses, and doesn't necessary reflect what's available today. Plus Sony's embrace of third-party lenses has really filled out the roster, especially at the more reasonable price points. Also, a couple misses on the adapted lenses. While Canon does have the advantage with their RF-EF adapter (which should outperform any third-party, especially if shooting action), Sony was the original mirrorless platform that everyone adapted to, so there is a huge library of adapters out there for everything under the sun. Which is why it was also confusing bringing up the Speedbooster in the comparison section since the E-EF version was where Metabones first started. And, for transparency, I have an FX30. But I would have bought it regardlessly since I'm very deep in the system 😅 (Though I do miss Canon's color science...)

On spec sheets fuji and nikon looks very promising. It would be nice if you could test one of them for a week or two and check can they be better than canon/sony.

Kind of an unfair comparison with the SOOC footage. The FX30 does have a "standard" mode as well that's much more similar to Canon's "standard", S-Cinetone is its own thing.

Both are good cameras. A lot has changed in the recent years with everyone (vloggers) buying sony cameras. I want to buy a sony but Canon is good too. but if they block third party lens manufacturers from producing lenses for canon mounts then......maybe sony is a good option.

The best camera under 2k is the ZCAM E2M4. 4k 160p prores 422 internal, low light performance. At 51200 iso, you get pretty clean images. Just ettr.

I would go with the FX30 just because its more center focus on video than photography. R7 can do both media but its body was designed to be a photo-first camera before video. Having that fan, red tally lights and button layout for filming really helps a lot. As much as these new cameras can dissipate heat better now, i still prefer to have a fan to help cool the camera better because you never know when you're going to be in 90+ degree weather.

You have to try the X-H2S. The only stacked sensor camera at a reasonable price. It really punches with the features it offers.

What do you have against Sony digital active stabilization? To me it’s essential unless I were on a tripod or gimbal. I get that it has a slight crop but it’s great.

I just bought a canon r50 and i can say that this camera is really handy and easy to use. And those colors omg... the colors are absolutely stunning in canon. I belive that r7 is much better, you know, 10 bit log, ibis etc. I tried some fujifilm and sony cameras... they can shot beautifuly but those menus... idk they look like chaotic, i mean I don't like the softwere.
