I took the Canon R8 out into the Real World to test out it's Auto Focus on Woman's Lacross and the Harlem Globetrotters. It's kind of insane how well it works, how sticky it is, and how tack sharp the action photos are time and time again. It's not every day you get auto-focus capability of a $6,000 camera in a $1500 one. If you ever use and R3, followed by an R8, you'd have a hard time differentiating one from the other.

I photographed Men's LAX and a Philadelphia Union Soccer game after filming this video....and I'm even more sold on it's AF capabilities. This $1,500 R8 has superior AF capabilities than the Nikon Z9. It just works, without a fight. No, Nikon shooters wont like these facts. They will tell me I don't know how to set the Z9 up, and that it's human error, it's not. I know what I'm doing, and so do the Pro Z9 shooters I speak with at events. Right out of the box, it just works.

Hey Jared! I own a Z9 and I'll be truly honest! you are right, Now, I don't have hands on the R8 just yet but from only the "Tracking Standpoint" what I saw in this video is mindblowing! Nikon Z9 is nowhere close to it.. Let me be clear with it... This is only regarding the subject detection and tracking capabilities. Hopefully Nikon fixes it. The af is good, but I often need to switch to dynamic on it and go "Dslr Style" quiet often

Good to see the R8 holds its own. I had some concerns when it first was announced. For the extra 1000.00 I like all the options that come with the R6MII personally and glad I chose that one for my first FF camera. Did you use the auto in the Case settings and what other AF options did you possibly change to dial it in a bit more? Great AF review.

I’m a hobbyist photographer who travels often enough. I sold my Nikon gear 5 years ago and want to get back into it. I’ve been researching on whether to go Canon or Sony. I’m leaning to Canon because I like the ergonomics and ease of use. I don’t plan to go professional and I don’t have a strong negative opinion on the RF-EF adapters. Body budget is around $1300 so that puts me around the R8 or A7III. There’s a lot of Canon/Sony switchers on KZfaq but it feels like an iPhone vs Android for me. I’m looking to only get 4 lenses on either system: 50mm 85mm 70-200mm 24-70mm Optional 18-35mm. This video just tipped me over to Canon

The biggest thing is the tracking coming diagonally towards the camera, so many cameras even with great eye AF struggle with this and to think this is adapted glass with was it a 600f/4 mkii? That is about 10+ years old now. Great results. For less than £2k damn.

Good info, and appreciated. I have been wondering if the lesser memory in the R8 compared to the R6mkII had an appreciable effect on AF speed and accuracy. It sounds like it doesn’t. Frankly, the buffering limitations are ones I can live with, as they fit into my shooting style anyhow. This video helps to confirm what I already knew: my RP’s days are numbered, and the R8 will be taking its place as quickly as I can afford one. Thanks!

FYI on lax sticks. That's the shutter. Lax sticks don't ever flex like that on a shot. I still use mechanical shutter on my R6 when shooting lax for that reason. The biggest challenge I've had with the eye AF autofocus has been it's ability to discern which player I want when taking high traffic shots. I've stayed using the traditional spot focus so I can be specific in telling the camera which person to start with. I look forward to trying the improved capabilities this spring season
@davidmpoliveira1
@davidmpoliveira1 Жыл бұрын
I have my R6 set-up to start eye AF at the location the spot/central point AF is set to, and I have a 2nd back focus button for eye AF with servo AF, so then I just point my camera to the person I want to focus on, and start continuous eye AF. It's mostly focus and recomposing, I'm using the central AF point to tell the camera who I want to focus on. Jared did that on this video as well. While this is not perfect, it does help, most of the time, when there are multiple subjects in the frame.

It is truely amazing that the only that you appear to focus on is autofocus, that's it. Every camera..... "How sticky is the autofocus?"........ "How quickly does the AF acquire?" you seem to avoid the very obvious questions: How eye-bleedingly expensive is RF glass? I mean why would you use an adapted lens for the lacrosse? Why not use the $13000 RF version? Yep $13k! And to be honest, you could put the EF 600 in front of a box brownie and you'd get great shots. You used possibly one of the best telephotos in the world, not the usual lenses that most of us have. How about talking about the very few lenses that are available on the RF mount? How there is not competition on the RF mount, so Canon will keep rinsing it's customers. We could talk about the tiny buffer that the R8 has (much like the R7), your experience of it does match others. So when you are shoot continuous RAW, how quickly does that fill? How long does it take to clear? So many unanswered questions......................................................Why would anyone buy a camera and allow the manufacturer to decide what glass you can use? It's a licence to rinse. At the end of the day the R8 is the poor man's R6 Mk2. Poor weather sealing and average build quality. Slower reading sensor, so expect plenty of rolling shutter (might not see much in basketball but baseball?), one card slot and no IBIS (great if you are a pro but for the average photographer....). It's got it's place but you still need RF glass. If you are happy with Canon dictating what you do, that's fine, after all, you are only a paying customer.

Being as I don't want to use my hobby as any kind of a business, I've been waiting for a reasonable Canon camera to come into my life, and I think this is it. I'd rather get the R8 and invest in some slightly better glass then to get the R6 MkII and suffer with some middling lenses. I dabble in all sorts of photography; a student of many, master of none. But the all around capability of this camera, whether it be landscapes, portraits, air shows, sports, astrophotography... I think this body will be able to handle them all. I'm truly excited. Now to drum up the $1500. :) Thanks for the info, 'Fro.

Jared, you were shooting at 1/2500sec on some shots. Why wouldn't a mechanical shutter give you a "rolling shutter" effect? Remember that at high speeds you are shooting through a moving slit. Logically the moving subject is in a different place as that slit moves across the sensor. Somebody explain to me why a mechanical shutter doesn't give rolling shutter effect, on moving subjects, at high shutter speeds.

Great review and great shots! Have you got any plans to shoot any 'faster action' with the R8? I am specifically talking about Motorsports or Aviation as I am very interested to see what the limits are for the rolling shutter given the lack of mechanical shutter. Love the channel and the podcast.

Impressive. Looks better at tracking than my R5 and Z9 (they both still get the shots). Good price too, but too bad it’s half RP. Makes it a no go for me.

I compared the R6 (not II) to the R8 I own in the store and the R6 just focuses faster, and more definitively. There is no guessing in the R6. I've played around with all sorts of settings and cannot get it to match. Also, there are more useful controls in the R6 menu than the R8. And the viewfinder is better. The R6 is a nice step up from the R8... I read a lot of your reviews (and others) and it makes it seem like the R8 is just as good as higher end models when you compare them. In the real world, using the latest copies on the market, there is a noticeable difference to me. I just got an RF100 2.8L and it's ok, but it misses focus a lot. I'll keep messing with settings (I've watched yours and others' videos on all the settings.)

Unrelated to the camera review, but I went to see the Globetrotters a couple weeks ago and I enjoyed the show. The "Dazzle" guy is basically doing like a circus-level juggling performance, and they had a good mixture of their classic old jokes and some new gags too.

I'm still waiting for the review of the R6 Mark II (not just pReviews). It's easily the best camera in its class (followed by the A7IV and then the S5 II) but almost nobody covers this outside of its initial release (even Pete Mckinnon only did a preview and nothing else and Irene Rudnyk, the second biggest Canon ambassador, hasn't done any review).

Thanks for the cool video. I am doubting enormously. I started as a photographer two years ago. I now have my own photo studio. I mostly shoot portraits and fine art. I also occasionally shoot videos for companies. I have been using an a7ii on loan for the past few years. Now I want to buy my camera myself. I have a huge doubt between the R8 or R6 (not the markii) and can't make a choice after all those videos on KZfaq. I watched your comparison but still in doubt.

I’m considering snagging this camera. I’ve boxing and recently pro wrestling with an M50. The price helps me but is it 6fps or 40fps and no in between. I mean to not get any warp with the electronic shutter can I lower it manually to like 30? Does it have that option?
