What are the best lenses for the the Canon #SL2 (or #200D)? This is a question aI get all the time. The SL2 is a great beginner camera for both photography and video. It’s definitely one of the most popular cameras Canon has ever released.
If you already bought it or are considering it, what are some lenses you should consider? There are lenses from Canon and other third-party options and I’ll go through some of my favorites.
I will share with you several types of lenses and give you recommendations at different price ranges.

What's up everyone?! I’m super interested in knowing if this Canon SL2/200d best lenses video was helpful. Which of these lenses did you like best? Which do you want to get? What would be on your lens wish list?. Did you like the video? Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏

I would have included the 85 mm f/1.8 Canon, It is wallet friendly and I think the best portrait lens for these cheap cameras. Also the 24mm f/2.8 is quiet fast but much wider than the nifty fifty. I prefer that to do street photography.

@ Thomas Fransson - I'm glad you enjoyed it. Check out the rest of the SL2 Playlist if you're interested. @Chaa Hadi - Sigma is just crushing it right now! @Jozsef Olasz - I love that lens. Do you think it's a little long for a portrait lens (with the crop factor)? I really like the 24mm f/2.8. It's hard to beat for the price. That would have been a good one to include. Thanks for the suggestions!!

@@TechGearTalk The 85 mil is way too long for sure, only good if you have a barn as a studio :D, but that is the closest I think to have to the 70-200 creaminess under £450. I love that lens, but limited in use for sure. Also I never really used the 70-200 I don't know what I am talking about. :D

Many older lenses like Canon's 28-135 are just amazing. They perform just like professional lenses, have OIS and have a USM motor. I was able to pick up a 28-135mm for only £49 and it was a great lens till it rolled off a table. You don't always need to spend thousands on lenses as there's loads of hidden beautiful lenses out there. However this video is just amazing and I do recommend the lenses shown in this video, plus this person knows well what he is talking about so I'm definitely subbed.

thank you. i'm a beginner and just purchased the SL3. your videos have helped me tremendously getting going in the right direction and this one is no exception. I had purchased the actual "nifty fifty" but after talking with a friend he gave me a reality check and I was second guessing it due to the cropped sensor. call it fortuitous or dumb luck but the lens was actually delayed in shipping and i found this video. i cancelled that order and instead purchased the Sigma Art 30mm f/1.4 Lens. i haven't received it yet but i feel like i'm making a much more informed decision that puts my mind at ease. really appreciate all of your content.

A whole lot of beginners are choosing the SL2 based on your in-depth reviews. Some of us are looking to use it specifically for travel video and photography. I think it would be a great idea for you to make a video showing us what accessories you think are essential (stabilization, lenses and what/where/when to shoot with them, shooting techniques, audio improvement, memory cards and batteries, drone to pair etc). As far as I can tell there isn’t a single video out there for highlighting an ideal setup for travel for the SL2. Looking forward to seeing this one!

@@TechGearTalk I have a question. Around that time in India, canon 200D (with 55-250 tele) was 53K. Since i was short 10k, they gave me without tele, promising i can buy later when i had cash. Now, should i go for 55-250 or buy 70-300 4-5.6 IS II USM? Does it make any difference buying the later?

@TheMotivatedRambler
@TheMotivatedRambler 5 жыл бұрын
Solid video, man. For my use, which is travel photography/videography I try to travel as minimal as I can. I had the 55-250, but I always had to swap lenses to get anything below 55, which happened too often for my liking. I tested and settled on the 18-135 which gives me tremendous flexibility when exploring. I agree on the Sigma 18-35, that lense is absolute 🔥. Unfortunately, I returned it because it's a bit too heavy to travel long term with. Once I settle down, definitely going to be my "studio" lense for sure. Thanks to your video, I'm about to test out the Sigma 30 to see if I can still get similar quality to that of the 18-35 minus the size and weight. If it all works out, my travel kit would consist of the Canon 18-135, Sigma 30, and Canon 24 (it's so small it's hard not to take it for back up). Thanks for the information. Cheers!

The Motivated Rambler I hear you. I can only manage very light cameras and lenses; hence having the 200D. I have just splashed out on the Ricoh GR Mark ii as a ‘go to’ camera. Despite lots of research prior to buying; I previously bought the Canon G9x and Panasonic TZ90, both didn’t quite meet my needs. Hopefully this time I will have made the right decision.

Apsc lenses dont have the range x1.6 so 55-250 is 55-250
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
The crop factor comes from the sensor, rather than the lens. So if you're putting in on an APS-C sensor camera (like the SL2) you will still need to apply it. If you put that lens on a full frame sensor camera (assuming it would accept it, like the sigma 18-35 which is an EF mount) you will only be able to use it at 35 because you will get vignetting and you will see the edges of the lens - since it was designed only to cover an APS-C sensor. Does that make sense?
@nijmamz
@nijmamz 5 жыл бұрын
I think dean was making the point that EF-S lenses don’t have a crop factor on APS-C sensor cameras as they are designed for them. Eg the EF-S 10-18mm wide angle you mentioned acts like a 10-18mm on my SL2. However the EF 50mm 1.8 acts as an 80mm on my SL2 as it is designed for a full frame sensor and is magnified by 1.6 due to using it on my crop sensor camera
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for jumping in. But that assumption is inaccurate. There is always a crop factor when using an aps-c sensor, even if you’re using a lens designed for an aps-c sensor camera. The focal range on the lens is unchanged, it’s just not projecting an image large enough to cover a FF sensor. But you are still taking a smaller crop of a smaller projected image. Edit: one more point. The focal range never changes on the lens, it is what it is. What we’re discussing here is equivalent FOV (field of view)
@nijmamz
@nijmamz 5 жыл бұрын
Ah! Apologies. That actually makes sense as the image is a circle but the sensor “cuts” the image into its sensors size! Great knowledge and thank you!
@TechGearTalk
@TechGearTalk 5 жыл бұрын
You nailed it! If you ever want to make sure, if you look on B&H (for example) geni.us/IdiaJQh You will see that they will list the 10-18mm lens as: 16-28.8mm (35mm Equivalent). I really appreciate you joining and contributing to the community 🙏

Being new to the world of photography (Not strictly true, as I have been using a Fujifilm Finepix S4080) but have decided I need something more up market for future us, so decided to go with the Canon SL2 (in my case 200D). After watching quite a few video tutorials on DSLR's, I am pleased to say that your presentations on camera (and in this case lens choices), stands out above everything else I have seen. There's so much valuable info in this video. My biggest takeaway is invest in the lenses and not the body. I'm going to go with the very affordable 50mm prime lens (For my SL2) with the 1.8 aperture because it's a faster lens and will let in more light in for panning B-Roll shots of computer tech! Hopefully I can pan without the image stabilization on my fluid head tripod without any issue and I feel like the 1.8 aperture will let more light in to reduce the grain that seemed to be prevalent even with a TON of light on my kit and wide angle lens that has 4 times the aperture.

Hi, great video!!! I have an SL2 and have been wanting to step up the image quality of my shots. For the most part I have the intro lens, 18-55, 55-250 and 35-80. I think I bought a better-quality lens in the 18-135, f4-5.6. I luv this lens, it's my go-to, everyday lens. I like the zoom range the most, it's very versatile. How would you rate this lens as compared to the 24-70 f4 that you mention in the video. I'm considering it for an improvement in image quality over the 18-135. Also, considering the 24-105 f3.5-5.6, I assume that the 24-105 f3.5-5.6 is in between 18-135 f4-5.6 and 24-70 f4 in terms of quality. With the image quality much better than the 18-135 f4-5.6, but not as good as the 24-70 f4. So my thinking is to go with the 24-70 f4 as the best improvement in image quality I mostly take landscapes and portraits. Any advice would be highly appreciated. thanx, mark

Greetings, I used to be a higher end professional portrait photographer when we all were shooting nothing but medium format (Hasselblad at our studio, speaking of expensive lenses). Then digital lowered everyone's standards for in-camera skill and our studio closed and I had to get a real job. I've been watching your vids because I'm about to dive into video, but just for personal use. As someone who knows lenses, I think you nailed it better than anyone else I've heard regarding reasons to consider lens X vs. lens Y. My only reco to you might be to emphasize, even more than you do, that you buy lenses for life and digital bodies for a couple/few years. Also, when choosing your first system (Canon, Sony, etc.), I like to tell people, if you have a friend who already has a fairly well appointed system, simply buy into the brand your friend has. Image quality is great across brands anymore and feature set superiority flip-flops back and forth w new models. So you really are buying into a lense system. Therefore, if you have a friend w several lenses you might be able to barrow... DONE! Now get together w your friend and buy complimentary specialty lenses. I have a nice collection of glass from L-series (my use only) to EF-S glass I share w my wife and son. If money is no object, I can't say enough about L series glass! Simply awesome! Now, I have a Canon 50mm EF 1.4 lens you mention here that I find very disappointing. It is the only lense in my stable that will not focus accurately. At the distance of a normal bust portrait it will always focus about 2 inches closer than it should. Focus on the eyes and it will be just a bit out. Focus on the ears and the eyes are tack sharp and the ears are a bit out. Unfortunately, my son keeps that lens in his bag, so I hadn't noticed this problem for a couple years or I would have sent it back. He compensates for it when shooting stills, but that won't work w video. Have you had any issues with any of your ultra fast lenses? My guess is other cheaper lenses with an aperture of f4 or higher may be as far off but it simply can't be detected when the depth of field is 4X deeper than with an f1.4 lens. Of course, my 85mm 1.2L suffers no such affliction. Thank you, though, for the quality reviews.

Awesome comment and feedback Keith. I completely agree with buying lenses forever and a body for now. Total bummer about the 50/1.4... I mostly film with 1.8 and 1.4 lenses and have had no issues with the focus for video. I feel that the dual pixel AF in Canon is outstanding and it does an excellent job at tracking. I do use my 70-200 and 24-70 2.8 and again, no issues that I've noticed. Appreciate having you as part of the community and grateful for your contributions 🙏

Another thing with fixed aperture is as you zoom in video the opening stays the same and does not harm your effect. Bodies are transitory but glass is forever. I am creating my collection slowly with what I need. I am not just buying willy nilly. I get what I need for the workflow, not my ego. Love your videos and straight forward and no gimmicks. Another little tip I got on non stabilized lenses is to shoot double the focal length on your shutter speed, and shake is minimized. So 50mm is 1/100th of a second. Actually works. Also that nifty fifty has a noisy focus mechanism. Sounds like you are grinding coffee beans, but it works a treat. Thank you.
@TechGearTalk

Thanks Vincent! Yup, shortening up your SS will help minimize the effect of camera shake. Yes, that 50 1.8 is noisy and slow to focus, but so cheap!

Hi Sagi. I chanced upon your article and I am blown away with how informative, on point, and amazing it is for budding photographer/ beginners like me. Knowing about lenses was a very useful for me. However, I need your help and will appreciate it very much as I am super confused about buying my first camera. Nikon vs canon vs. Fujifilm. Have a trip to Egypt soon and a canon ambassador suggest 16-35 and 24-70mm lens in full frame to get wide angle and nice coverage for great architecture and landscape photography + 50mm for low light/ portrait. . A. Now I will go apsc to manage budget. Please help choose the apsc lens equivalent of aforementioned lenses? Will they come under ultrawide/ wide and will be sufficient to cover wide areas. B. I am getting a cheap deal on 18-135 as I heard it's an all rounder. Should I buy it and ditch 18-55, 55-250 kit lens and 50 mm? And just travel light with 18-135 + one ultra wide/ wide angle lens? Will it be sufficient to cover architecture+ landscape+ streets + portrait? Color science and depth is very important too. C. Finally am confused b/w Canon sl2 vs Canon sl3 vs M50 mark 2..which one should I buy? (Getting many canon apsc sellers and lens deals on olx. Getting just 15-45 lens + m50 mark 2 two ads. ). I heard canon sl3 has great color science and is good for both video and photo. Should I buy that? And are canon full frame lenses compatible with it too just like sl2?

Thanks so much for the kind words. I can look into that type of video. The lens will not offer slow motion, of course you would need a camera that shoots at a higher frame rate for that (120 or at least 60fps). I'm adding this to the list.

@@TechGearTalk My reasoning for choosing Sl2 as my first camera is: 1. It is cheap ( hope to buy it for 410 euro with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III and small camera bag). 2. Although I need a photo camera, I believe I have to focus on videos since a lot of social media involves mini videos ( and my hobby/pet project is HEMA, Historical European Martial Arts and running my club's social media) 3. It is really light, so as a second on field camera it will be an asset after I upgrade. 4. You need a second camera when you are doing an interview etc so I will still be using it even after I upgrade 5. Wifi helps coordinating 2 cameras ( I could have 2 mobile phones for remote control). 6. Sl3 has it's drawbacks so I will not be losing too much if i go for sl2. PS1 on a camera review you could add a section about using the said camera as a second camera now and in some years; you could use factors such as weight, battery life, special features ( eg video streaming) and so on. The fact that a camera can still be really useful in 5 years plays a significant role in chosing a camera. PS2 You have been my main source of information about cameras, thank you very much for the amazing presentation style you have !
