This is called the D-1 chassis and this particular model looks identical to the PAL Panasonic NV-870. Very nice machines.

Well, as always, I think it's really great someone cares enough to give machines like these a service and tries (and succeeds sometimes) to get them going again. I think everyone should appreciate how the care and attention into getting this working was shared and that a lovely device works as good as it does. That pause/still is fantastic with no juddering and bad tracking, as is the sound and image provided by the device. The rewind, fast-forward and other operations are quiet and you can see why devices such as this had such longevity!

I learned long ago that you can always tell who the worst technicians are in any field because they're the ones that criticize all other technicians. Good techs don't need to badmouth other ones. As long as it gets fixed, that's all that matters.

I love these videos so much. As a VHS collector I find so much use in these videos. They help me out when repairing my VCRs. I currently have a Zenith top loader from 1980 which plays for 2 seconds then stops. Changed the belts and flips the rubber tired inside out. Rewind and fast forward works great but I cant figure out what is stopping the tape. Gonna try out the tape tension next.

I have a Panasonic PV-4700 that has a very similar mechanism as this one, if not the same. Made in 1987. My aunt gave it to me. Was kept in a damp place so the head amp board is all rusted. Tried to fix it when I was 11 and of course I made it worse. Used to produce a very crappy picture. Was originally a NTSC machine but someone installed a hack board to convert to PAL-M, very common thing to do in the 80's here in Brazil. A lot of people bought their machines abroad, like in the US or Paraguay. VHS machines used to be very expensive in Brazil, almost the same price of a brand new car. A luxury item really, but in the 90's they came down in price like crazy.

All of these older VCRs should at least be attempted to be repaired. They were built like tanks compared to the junk they were churning out towards the end of VHS's lifespan.

Everytime I see a VCR I get a small spasm of nostalgia. They were such a large part of my childhood and early adulthood. I love seeing them repaired.. but at least down in the lower 48, they are getting so rare to see.

Good video brings back memories. Was also a vcr tech for years. What I did on the pinch rollers was put in a clear dummy tape put in ff play mode and lightly hold 1000 sand paper against pinch roller while turning opposite reel so counter would keep going. Basically sanded until the no shininess was left on roller. Eject tape then clean off debris off roller.

That ended up being quite the project! but made for a awesome video, nice repair!

And as for soldering.....yes you say it correctly compared to me..........yes your better than me but I've been doing it for 38 years and could MAYBE give you a good run for your money.........k, maybe not...(lol)...but I have learned some tricks along the way LMBO!!!!!!!!! For it's age it works well, now it's problems have been sorted :-D. I bet those bad joints were only just working in the past, No one opens a working device to hunt for cracked joints. A fault just waiting to happen. In the uk it was Nicam for the t.v stereo audio, some high end vcr's had it.

I'd love to pick all these cool old things up and take them home instead of sending them away! I'd love to see them all working again, ebay pricing be danged. They're ALL worth the effort & love.

I'm with you and i HATE people not turning up when they said they would. I do computer repairs and the last guy failed to turn up on two occasions. When i tackled him about it all i got was a rather arrogant "i've been really busy blah blah blah....'' like that's a really good excuse! My attitude was 'so you don't have a phone then and couldn't let me know you would not be coming'. I get the distinct impression that because they know i'm retired that i have nothing better to do than wait in for them.

I agree that you use the gun better than anyone! I appreciate your vids and have used troubleshooting and tips from both you and some others, in fact another one I watch turned me on to you. I have a lot of vintage audio and video stuff I am going through for maintenance and repairs around here. Sometimes people bring me their stuff to look at or give it to me cause they don't want it no more. I like to save stuff from the trash when I can also. Shame on you for saying that this unit is junk and only good for the scrap. This 1985 (not 1984) Canon VR-HF600 was the clone-model of 1985 Panasonic AG-1800, and it's the last one built with a linear power supply transformer. Far better than switching power supply found in PV models. The 1986 models (Canon VR-HF810 and VR-HF820) came with MTS tuner and belt-less front carriage. The 1984 Panasonic PV-1730 had major issues with a cracked pinch roller cap, video head drum bearings, and direct-drive ICs motor failure. This is the same mechanism found in AG-1950 as well, which also had IC motor failure. I like the successor 1985 PV-1740 with 2-belt mechanism better than 1984 PV-1730, in terms of reliability.

I used HiFi videos for music all the time, especially to record long radio programs. one tape = 6 hours !

Your videos are great. The naysayers probably have not worked on even a quarter of the devices you have worked on. This deck actually reminds me of a regret of mine. I found one just like this in Goodwill back in 2017. Barely any scratches, the panel door was on there too. Looked almost new. Yet it had the issue with the cassette not landing (and then would eject promptly). Since I had no idea what I would get myself into, I did not buy it. Would have been a nice unit in my collection. I settled for it's low end brother, a Sylvania VC 2234 which is not a bad V.C.R. by any stretch. It did open up the door for me to learn repair as it developed an issue with the idler after two years of faithful service. I started seeking out videos like this so I could save my poor Sylvania. It now works better than ever.

Rubber reviver is a common product in the print industry, you generally buy it by the gallon, and use it like that as well. Revives the rubber rollers in presses, and you also have a good number of rubber rollers that need to be relined, so you pay for that, even at $1000 per set, because the other option is buy a new press to replace the one you have, and the new one is around $50k minimum, and not as good as your 40 year old solid metal panel offset press. Plus the old press works well, and is not as touchy and prone to breaking down. Yes the rubber cleaner is rough, strips your skin grease and oil free instantly, but cleans rubber parts to nearly new condition. Just keep away from plastics, and even the vapour will craze plastics like PS, and this will also damage nylon.

I have a JVC that looked a lot like this unit. I think it's in the garage now and I'll have to see if it still works thanks to your videos.

Enjoying the vid so far. Have to admit it's been that long since I've used my Thorn VHS machine that I can't remember the model number even, but that mechanism is pretty darn reliable also. I picked it up in an auction lot for £5 with a couple of CRT sets from a house clearance & it worked from the get go, no cleaning no belt no nothing. I'd bet if I went and shoved a tape in it's face now it'd do the same, will have to make time to pull it out and give it some deserved attention and run some John Wayne films through it lol

I'd be interested in buying this one if it's not valuable to you, I just find it interesting that Canon sold VCRs. Usually I don't like VCRs that were made by other companies and sold under a different name, like any RCA or GE branded VCR. I guess it makes sense but I always think of SLR cameras when I think of Canon. I'm trying to get a VR-40 aswell since that is a portapak one with Hi-Fi which is rare on portable VCRs. I already have an S-VHS but I just like the design and build quality of the older units before they got cheap. Sadly I think shipping it to my state (MI) would be more expensive than what the unit is worth, but I am not sure. Great video btw

Great video, this vcr reminds me of the blaupunkt that my late father had which my brother now owns. I think he bought it maybe early 80s anyway it needed a new head fitted and when my brother took it in to be repaired the guy doing the service/repair wanted to buy it? Not sure why at the time but i wish i knew what the model it was. All i remember is the connection on bsck was SCART only

Cool VCR. Just a quick question... If the mechanism fully unloads during rewind and fast forward, does it mean you do not have the tape time counter active? Or does it have some other means to measure the tape time?

I have a couple of vcrs that im interested in getting them serviceing if they can be..they both power up but need some work

Thanks for the video! I found this exact vcr at an estate sale for $10! And have been using it ever since. A few days ago the picture became fuzzy and choppy while playing. Audio works perfectly during it and when i hit pause the picture becomes almost clear but when i hit unpause it goes back to being fuzzy? Any insight would be great id love to keep this one going for as long as i can everything else on it seems to work perfectly

What's your opinion of the JVC HRD725? I have one awaiting resurrection that I've owned since the late 80's. I suspect I'm going to be faced with many bad capacitors. I put in a new head in the late 90's, and it never saw much work after that.

Hey volt I have a question, I have a VR-HF710 and just today the pinch roller suddenly started to finally give way, I tried to sandpaper it but it didn’t help at all unfortunately, I tried everything to make it grip again but it’s pretty much done for, what place could have such specific replacement for it? Do you still see comments on this Video ?? I have one of these that I bought new from the Company I worked for at the Time. As a matter of interest My Serial No. is very close to Your Unit HAHAHAHA It was plugged in and working till 2019 when I cleaned out the House from a Fire. Was in storage till just recently (Original Box) and is trying to "wake it up" got it to load the Tape. fast Forward and Rewind. The tape transport wants to load the Tape to play, it moves just a bit and resets. I can move the transport easily by hand like You did. moves freely I can put it in the Play position, Power it up and it will reset. Since the Head drum is Frozen, I am wondering if is detecting that the Drum is not turning. Do You have a Video on how to remove the Drum so I can free it up. Can I just take out the 3 Screws from the under side? I cleaned the Mode switch. which is very touchy to get it centered to work right. HAHHAAHA.. Mike M Central Wis...
