@wonderwall135 The depth of field is larger than on the HF S21, due to the slightly smaller sensor (1/2.5" vs 1/3". However, with longer focal lengths, the lens/sensor combination is capable of nice shallow depth of field. A great example is the shot of Chris with frosty breath in our XF105/XF100 hands-on. @SiggyProductions1 The files will drop seamlessly into Final Cut Pro X. For FCE and iMovie you will need to transcode the files, but this is done right within the software.

@pokemonhat HD video is only 2 megapixels. The extra pixels are just used for still capture. A lower pixel count actually improves video quality. The only reason you would want a high megapixel camera is for still capture. Jordan @ The Camera Store

I am looking into the differences of this and the XF 100/105. Granted the price is the major difference but I want to produce commercials, music videos, wedding videos, and possibly some Indie films. I want to thank you for a very informative and very professional video here. It was great. @yogamazing Depends on your requirements. I prefer the external controls, recording format, and zoom rocker of the XF100. Also, the XF100 doesn't have a viewfinder that shuts off if you apply any pressure to it... (I'm looking at you, XA10) However, the XA10 is a lot smaller, especially if you are not using the XLRs and touch screen AF does work very well. Personally, I find the XF100 to be well worth the price difference, but it depends on every shooter's needs. Jordan @ The Camera Store

@pinebarranch Final Cut Pro cannot natively work with the files from the XA-10, so it takes a long time to convert the files to ProRes. Final Cut X is much faster, however it will not run on an old G4 machine. You may just have to wait it out. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

@FrodoDojo All video formats going onto a computer must be compressed. The compression on new AVCHD cameras is as good or better than tape based compression. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

It shoots in 25p (or 24p in the US) which is the minimum standard for TV broadcasting. Not for all channels though, some demand 50p, i.e. twice the frame rate. If you are making fiction films consider other cameras in this price range, especially if you want something that will primarily sit on a tripod.

@drakescz I forgot to mention, correcting your 'Canon red' flesh tones isn't really a problem when corrected in post. Just by desaturating, and slightly increasing the gama levels and maybe adjusting the white balance of the footage, this issue pretty much disappears in the editing software.

Hi, it's great footage, congrat! But one question: The slow motion parts of your video, is that shot by XA10 as well??? I know that this camera does not have 60fps - so it's not for slow motion. Right?

@ArcticRc I far prefer the look of progressive video. All our videos are shot in either 30P or 24P. This video was shot at 30P. For some videos shot at 24P check out our videos, The Battle At F-Stop Ridge, The Desert, and The Expo Promo. I only use interlaced video for older editing systems.

In this price range, you may want to go for the Sony VG 20. You lose the XLR inputs, but it features interchangeable lenses, plus it has a much larger sensor. In other words, it has superior image quality with a lot of control over depth of field (throwing backgrounds out of focus). Check it out. I settled on the XA10 in the end because I found it better suited to my needs (documentary).

Thanks for sharing- great video. How do you maintain the image quality when importing to editing softwares? It seems that my video quality is great when I'm looking at the Canon LCD screen but when I import it to Adobe Premiere on my PC, it seems the quality has definitely decreased...I've been reading some articles about AVCHD files ( have you ran into similar problems)??

@ConsumerDV I too owned the JVC GY Hm100, the sensor in the Canon G10 is superior and puts out nicer video images, not to mention it's lighter. Although, the controls on the Hm100 were at the prosumer level, the G10 is not a prosumer camcorder. The touch screen interface on the G10 sucks, while the Hm100 had a small joystick to manipulate the menu.

@daltonlee240 If you are into indie film, I would seriously look at an HDSLR like the Canon T3i. It gives a much more cinematic look than the XA10, and it will teach you some good techniques for focus and exposure. The XA10 is a great run and gun camera for documentary work, or less planned shoots. Jordan @ The Camera Store

@drakescz Much like the DSLR's, you can turn down the Saturation down a notch in the picture styles settings. However, if the Xa10 is similar to the G10 you're restricted to -2 on each setting.

@josh2010hofland The XA10 would be a much easier camera for your friends to operate. The Sony has very shallow depth of field which makes focus trickier, as well as a manual zoom lens which is harder to operate smoothly. For documentary style shooting with inexperienced operators, I would certainly lean towards the XA10. Jordan @ The Camera Store

XA-10 footage will need to be converted, but iMovie does that automatically.

wow tough conditions for a camera test! Flat light and snow - even the most high end cameras would struggle! I know you mentioned briefly that the view finder seemed pretty sharp but I was wondering if you could give more info on your experience with the view finder as it seems to be the trend these days with manufacturers (even with their top of the line cameras) to have a sharp quality LCD and a poor unusable view finder. Thanks for the camera test footage.

@stefanhuang Here's the thing, you don't want "great color quality" straight out of the camcorder, you want something that can capture as Flat an image as is possible so it's easier to manipulate in post.

@ltsyourlife We got about 2 hours with the included battery.

Just a rule of thumb: If you're gonna upload test footage to KZfaq of a camcorder so people can see the quality, please don't edit and then render out the edited file to a lower quality than the camcorder/camera is able to record in, it helps the viewer (and potential buyers) see the full capability of the camcorder/camera.
