Canon XF605 - Low Light Night Recording in Westerville, Ohio on 5/4/2022
An impressive camcorder that displays very low noise in night time recording.
Gain of 0 to 21db is demonstrated and the XF605 performed very well.
I am very satisfied with this purchase from BHphotovideo.com
There are a couple handheld shots (obvious with some shakiness), but the smoother shots were atop the Sachtler ACE M head on Sachtler's aluminum legs tripod with mid-level spreader. I really enjoy this tripod and only wish I had purchased it years ago.

With apologies to your other subscribers - Yes, it was I who requested this night photography - and let me say I am VERY grateful for it. Your efforts that night are an excellent study in low light capability, and I think the XF605 performed exceptionally well. A little fuzzy when it came to street lights and traffic signals, but when you zoomed into shop windows and lighted signs, the footage exceeded my expectations. Surprised at the crisp capture of passing cars. I appreciate you identifying db as you filmed. Did you film in 4K, and upload same? I have found only one other owner that films outdoors with moving objects, and he is in the United Kingdom. Both of you are convincing me the 605 is worth the money. Again, many thanks to you for this.

Thank you so much! I certainly think it’s worth the money and think it will stand the test of time as 8K is just overkill. Even 1080 with this camera is very sharp. Yes, that was in 4K and uploaded as such.

This video may not interest many of my subscribers, but someone requested night videography of the Canon XF605, so here it is. Again, very pleased with the low light abilities of this camera.

Greatly appreciated. The last seven videos (that concert was the last with my 1080P Canon 70D DSLR) have been made using the Canon XF605 mated with a Sachtler Ace M with aluminum legs and mid-level spreader. Both the camera and tripod system was purchased from BHPhotovideo.com . Keep in mind not only did I have a learning curve, but I had to content with heavy wind and rain and unleveled bleachers. The legs spread and lock well on the bleachers (two legs on bleacher/seat below, leaned more backward toward me so weight is to the leg near me). My next video (that I will post tonight)… I had an umbrella in my left hand and camera pan arm in right (tough tasks), so that vid will be shaky, etc. The next vid I will try to get done tonight will be labeled something like “Capital Conference Championships Prelims” that should have good quality recording. Thanks again

AND before getting the Sachtler head/tripod I would use a monopod with a 70-200mm L lens and edit shakes in FCPX

Again, this was earlier on so my skills working the camera and tripod have improved. I may do a revisit of this during winter break. Lastly, make sure your video settings are 4K (2160/60) as mine seem to open at 1080/60 many times until I change it and I have gig internet service. I have my KZfaq settings to always go with highest quality, but it doesn’t always get me there.

This is the straightforward and real-life test I have been eager to see. A camcorder is what I need to round out my cameras: the C100 MKII and 5DIV, but was skeptical about things I've seen/read regarding XF605's noise and rolling shutter/digital artifact when panning. Any concerns with the latter?
@WunKoolKat
@WunKoolKat 9 ай бұрын
None…check out my latest low-light Friday night football videos from a distance in the recording nest above the press box (a good distance) panning there is faster than most would probably do and not one image issue noted. I also do not see the noise. Definitely no digital artifacts.

I should also add that the sound removed are from parts where me my son were having conversation. I do use an external mic with a “dead cat” wind mitigator since Ohio is pretty windy this time of year. Also, settings were auto except gain control (essentially ISO), which I adjusted manually.

Thanks for the video! What picture profile did you use? C-log, WideDR? how much gain did you use? It looks ok for a 1" sensor...Nothing beats my C100mk2 and a sigma f1.8 lens but a camcorder like this canon xf605 could be very useful...I just find it very expensive! I want to replace my XF300/XF100 but the XF605 is a bit much for me...thanks!

Absolutely…thank YOU for watching and commenting. Color Profile I used is “BT.709 Normal” (camera does have other options (BT.809 Wide DR, BT.708 Standard. CLog3, PQ,, HLG, EOS Standard and EOS Neutral). I primarily use auto settings 59.94 MP4 HEVC 422 10bit, but don’t notice much between the settings for what I’ve recorded, even when down to H.264 420 8 bit. It’s just so nominal of a difference for what I’m recording. This night video I made to show the gain/ISO ability so I switched the gain to manual. I had it at 0 gain for most of it, unless when I indicated I was increasing it. However, I did realize it may not have demonstrated the full potential as the other options were set to auto, which may have countered the gain-ability. The gain is certainly there. The videos in my history including the recent Street Players concert and earlier were with my my Canon EOS 70D (1080/30). I do a lot of video and wanted a quick setup as well and hated messing with changing lenses from my primary 70-200 2.8 back to a wide. I actually turned to using my IPhone to record 4k60 wide. On the iphone though, the second you punch in to zoom, quality suffers majorly, especially in lower light. I agree that your setup may very well produce a clearer image, but for ease of use, a young kid literally could operate the xf605 on a a good tripod/head system. I am very pleased with the Canon XF605. It has amazing functionality with superb ease of use. It was this or the Canon R5C which was out of stock. I may still get that one when it’s available or just go with the R5 since I do video primarily on this XF605, but would like to also do some quick and short vids (that’s all the R5 can really do before overheating LOL). That would complement this XF605 well.

Also the reason for me using a slightly lower quality in recording setting is due to me leaving the sporting event with about 80-100 gigs of footage. I can only work on one project on my imac at a time, then have to delete all created files and then back up to slower external 8TB drive (need another one of those by the way as they fill up fast). Not sure how people are using/working with 8K RAW, just mind blowing and overkill for what I’m doing.

@@WunKoolKat thanks so much for your response! I have really enjoyed using the XF300 and XF100 for live events for years and even with the C100mk2 (and a Canon 90D) I keep using the XF line for live events etc...I know camcorders are not "sexy" anymore and everyone wants mirrorless cameras nowadays...but for many situations (I do freelance videography for a living) a good camcorder (with 4K for some projects) is the right tool. I thought about buying a panasonic 4k camcorder but they have small sensors and I need ok low light (Not darkness of course but think wedding receptions etc-I use lights but as little as possible)-the XF300/100 are not good in low light. the XF605 looks promising but very few reviews done by professional videographers on youtube. I need to see footage shot in complete manual (except autofocus maybe) since I use all my cameras in manual for sure. I wish I could afford the XF605 but is very expensive I think here in Canada. Ideally for live events I would like 2 identical cameras to match picture profiles etc. Thanks for the video. I will check your other videos. I used to own the Canon 70D-not the sharpest footage etc but a very handy camera for small jobs. I still have it and have used it along the 90D and the C100mk2 for small corporate interviews. They match very well and the footage and bokeh look more appealing than when I shoot with the XF300. Something to do with that depth of field. Anyway...I have too many toys! take care

@@TheFandangovideoguy "Nothing beats my C100 Mark IIand a sigma f1.8 lens" Apples to oranges. Thats a cinema camera and this is a camcorder which will smoke the C100 Mark II in many situations. Just look at the parfocal performance on this thing. Thing of beauty.

I know it's not really your specialty, but would you be comfortable putting this camera on a monopod and recording weddings with it? Well done with this video 👏. Other "demonstration" videos of this camera have lots of grainy footage and washed-out color, even in broad daylight.

Thank you for the comment. As I know from recording sporting events in the past with a non- stabilized system (DSLR with 70-200mm 2.8 lens) with a monopod, the farther you zoom, the more shaky your footage will be. The Canon XF605 does have 5-axis optical image stabilization so I would assume it should certainly work with recording any event using a monopod provided that you do not have to zoom in too much. If so, I would recommend a tripod. Of course, my preference is the tripod I use (love it and would try in all ways to make do with it).

@@WunKoolKat Weddings are a very "run & gun" situation, and are often low-lit. You don't want (drunk) people tripping on a tripod, and sometimes you have to lift the camera out of reach of their reach. Also elevating the camera helps capture the important stuff that would otherwise be obscured by the crowd. I've never needed to zoom in or out; I just step forward or back and leave the camera zoomed all the way out. If you ever record a wedding, you want to keep your very expensive camera out of reach of wedding guests! Apparently I'm the only one who uses a (prosumer) camcorder to record weddings. Everyone else uses a DSLR.
@WunKoolKat

That all makes sense. If you have doubts, maybe rent an XF605 and try it out first. There are still overheating issues with the R5 and maybe a bit less with the R6. The R5C may be an option since it does not overheat due to its fan (like the fan on the XF605). With the R5C you get a full frame sensor, which is much bigger than the 1” sensor on the XF605, so it would be better in lower light. Plus with the R5C you can get some excellent photographs as well.
