Hey guys, today's video is kind of more for me because I've been wondering about what's better Watercolor paper or Mixed Media? Today I put that to the test comparing both papers from the brand Canson. Links to all the products below.

I was thinking about buying it but there are so many comments about the canson mixed media, I dont know what to buy for mixed media technique 🤔🤔🤔

canson's water color paper is 140lb and probably cold pressed so that means it's textured. you're supposed to use a lot of water for water color.

also def mixed media for dry and waxy mediums like graphite or prisma color. mix media is also really nice for acrylic paints. and of course water color paper for watercolor and possibly india ink? i haven't tried inks on mix media paper.

My style is I like texture paper but not to textured The texture paper gives me more control

This was rather helpful thank you. Odd I like patchiness of the watercolor on the mix media paper but it is definitely very smooth on the watercolor paper.

Prisma colors pencils to me work better on Canson Bristol paper and you can use light washes of paint/watercolors, inks, and alcohol markers. Canson mixed media is excellent too, except it is made for light watercolor painting because it is 98 pound weight and alcohol markes and micron pen works well too, but heavy uses will need Canson 140 pounds cold pressed and you have to tape it down so it wont buckle. Nice comparison and video. Thank you for making.

I enjoyed the "forgot to mention I was filming " thats epic, very helpful I just ordered the mixed media one and wamted to compare it to the watercolor one I have. So glad to find a good video on them. Thank you! Also beautiful sky outline, I subscribed in hopes that I catch more art videos!

I have both papers. If I'm using pencil on the watercolor paper, I get a better, more painterly look if I use a solvent with it. With the more tooth, the more the white shows through in the paper, giving a grainy effect. Some like that though. It's hard to do skin on the watercolor paper, it doesn't look smooth without thinning with solvent. I like to use 70% rubbing alcohol for a thinner, works really well. The mixed media works really well with acrylic paint I have found, and pencils are great for making greeting cards with this paper as well. Good review, at first the anticipation was killing me. But once you got started , it went pretty fast. Thank you.

It's not just any watercolor paper, it's CANSON, Canson is my favorite for paper period, especially now with the oil and acrylic paper by canson, which is best for gouache, acrylic, oil and mixed media, although I don't think You should use pencil on this paper.

How thick are both papers? Is one thinner or same? I think the reason you had to do so many swipes is because of the brush. Your brush seems a bit dry and I didn't pay attention very well but if it's a mixed media brush it doesn't hold as much water as a watercolour brush.

Yeah the watercolor one is quite thicker. And I wouldn’t be able to tell you about the brush 😅. It’s been years lol.

I guess, I'm no expert but i think you would have more control with a brush pen, than with an actual brush

this is great cause i use mixed media paper all the time and prismas so im used to them im not used to the cheaper water color pencils though, im trying to find out how to learn more about artist loft water color pencils and how water color pencils work in general my 1st try was terrible please help!

I need help and you seem like the perfect person. Christmas is coming up and I’m writing my list and I want to get more into art. I previously just ran out of pages on my old sketchbook. I want to be able to do sketches and use colored pencils but I want to know what type of paper I could use white color pencils on but they are also sturdy enough for me to try to use paint. Like acrylic paint. I saw that they have painting paper but is it a good texture for just sketching in case I don’t want to paint. There’s a lot of options and I don’t really know what I should pick because I’m mostly going to sketch and color but I’m also asking for acrylics this year and I want to at least be able to pay on something without having to grab another canvas. So I really need help picking out what I want to use if you could help.

I can try my best. I’m not like a real artist and I definitely don’t know what I’m taking about. But I’ve seen some sketchbooks with toned or black paper that with a white pencil should slow you to draw on it. And also let you lay acrylics on it because they are a little more thick. Personally I have never used one of these but I have definitely seen them floating around the internet so I think it’s worth a go. You could also maybe try to find gray paper to get a similar effect where you can play around with highlights and shadows.

so the paper doesnt begin to rip as you add layers yeah? Like how many layers can it handle? Im a noob

Well the watercolor paper can handle a couple. (I’m also still a noob so don’t worry 😂) But if you let it dry a little between them it can hold allot. The mixed Media one is another story that one can handle one or two Max 3 if you’re really patient. Hope this helped 🥰

Sophie Pearl for pencils (sketching and color) it works great!! It’s not sturdy enough for watercolor.

Sophie Pearl :). Also, if you do sketches with pencil only (no color) , you may want to get a Fixatif spray so your sketches don’t smear... but of course that’s optional

I’m sure if you let it dry it could work beautifully. I think it would be best on the watercolor paper since it’s thicker and could hold a heavier layer of paint.

I believe you can. You can thin them with a little if you want a watercolor affect but if you want to use them strait out of the tube that should be fine too. Hope this helped 🥰

Yes you can but it's recommended but not necessary to gesso the watercolor paper as well.
