Hearing Cantonese makes me smile. My first friend when I was 5/6 years old was 3/4 Chinese 1/4 Japanese. She lived 4 doors down & they owned a Chinese laundry. It was like a 2nd home to me. Her father always had Chinese opera on the radio. We were in each others homes all the time for several years until they moved. I never learned a word but somehow knew what her parents were saying. I swear I am wired for Chinese & can't wait to learn it formally. More videos please!

I am fascinated that Cantonese has up, down and neutral tones in the high, middle and low registers. It seems that it would be very hard to keep track of the tones, even while trying to master the pronunciation.

Greetings from Hong Kong, it's funny that a Cantonese speaker watch this video. One suggestion that please use traditional Chinese. Some of the Chinese characters used in this video are Simplified Chinese.

I have two favorite slangs I like to share: 1.) "sik woon mein, fan woon dai" - eat the bowl of noodle, then flip that bowl over upside down after. It literally mean how you repaid a person with betrayal when he/she did you a favor or something nice. 2.) "ng kin koon choy, ng lau an lui" - you will not cry until you see the coffin. This applied when a person wanting to try something that he/she thinks is fun, exciting, or entertaining, but ended up regretting later after experiencing total suffering and only wish not have done it in the first place.

I enjoyed Carmen's slang choices. "Gaau gaau jan, m bong chan" reminds me of "jaai tai" (literally, vegetarian dish look), which is used for looking but not buying anything. Her "m ngaam key" reminds me of "m go din" (literally, no electricity), which I use when there's no attraction between a man and woman. One that always cracks me up is "jau gai" (literally, the chicken ran away), which means to lose out on something or miss an opportunity. Ho gaau siu!

My grandma taught me "Ngoo nai (to poop milk)" This video made me learn a lot of new cantonese slangs! Please make part 2! :)

I've become a supportive fan of OTGW for almost a year and found that your videos are quite educational and funny at all times :) . Like Cantonese slang, I think that can be a subject worth to start up a long-lived TV program like the Oprah Winfrey show, or HK's "EYT" (欢乐今宵). However, I found 2 special Cantonese slang words that may be good for your Part 2 video (if it will happen).... 1. 趁地淋 ("chan dei lum") - This is an old-fashioned Cantonese slang dated back in 1950s/60s literally meaning "when the soil gets soft by now, it'll make you easier to dig a hole from it and bury yourself." It simply tells someone to "go die" or "go to hell", which is kind of wicked curse. 2. 不漏洞拉 ("bat lau dung laai") - This is a Cantonese corruption of the Vietnamese phrase "bắt đầu từ nay" used in Hong Kong. The Vietnamese phrase means "beginning from now" or "from this point forward" (bắt đầu = begin, start; từ = "from", nay = "now"). The phrase was made famous in a frequently broadcast Vietnamese radio PSA on Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) in Hong Kong during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The frequency of the broadcast (nearly once every hour) allowed many Hong Kong people to learn the Vietnamese phrase without knowing its actual meaning. It was often mistaken as a greeting, and the phrase eventually became a metaphor for Vietnamese people, but it may also be considered as derogatory by Vietnamese people in Hong Kong. Rice bucket in my family refers to someone who loves rice and eats it every meal. I still laugh whenever I hear my grandma saying 你 saut ga (from short short dey) in Taishanese. My aunt says laying an egg when someone takes forever. I learned recently 金魚佬 which means pedophile.

The first one means to wait a long time that your neck lengthened from stretching it to look. Ci Sin literally means Stick/stuck string = crossed wire = crazy. Great slang course.

Here's some that I use: 喊包 haam3 baau1 means cry-baby (literally cry bun) / lau gaai hau (not sure of the characters) means whiny mouth - we say these to my daughter if she's acting up. 火龍 fo2 lung4 (literally fire dragon) means a traffic jam ahead of you - a long line of red (this is taxi driver slang). 嗰條木嘴 go2 tiu4*2 muk6 jeui2 (literally that wooden mouth person) means that idiot. We use this jokingly in our family to describe ourselves when posing for pictures (I also nicknamed the Three Guys super market in Brooklyn 三條木嘴).
