Cantril School opened for students on Sept. 6, 1897. The two-story, six-room school was constructed for $7,775 on the same site as the original structure that had burned to the ground the previous year. The stately building boasts Roman arches, ornate scrolled cornices and a bell tower. It was built using pink and tan rhyolite from the local Silas Madge quarry, which is now part of Rhyolite Regional Park.
The Town of Castle Rock acquired Cantril School, 312 Cantril St., from the Douglas County School District in May 2023. The Town intends to preserve the historical building for generations to come and open it for public use. Arts and enrichment programming will be offered in the building in fall 2023.
