Here is the eighth installment from Cantus’ COVID-19 Sessions recorded live on March 17, 19, and 20.
The beauty and loneliness in Sara Teasdale’s poem "Stars" are captured perfectly by composer Ēriks Ešenvalds. We have all gazed up at the night sky with wonder at its majesty, and Ešenvalds’ piece captures Teasdale’s words elegantly.
We chose to record in the underground Westminster parking garage first for its acoustic, which gives the piece a stunning aural dimension. It has since taken on a deeper meaning and serves as a metaphor for those of us feeling increasingly trapped and isolated. We sing a song about the stars, 50 feet underground.
----
Alone in the night
On a dark hill
With pines around me
Spicy and still
And a heaven full of stars
Over my head
White and topaz
And misty red;
Myriads with beating
Hearts of fire
The aeons
Cannot vex or tire;
Up the dome of heaven
Like a great hill
I watch them marching
Stately and still
And I know that I
Am honored to be
Witness
Of so much majesty

Came here from professor Felipe Scagliusi, he was sharing a set of contemporary composers he likes and does a very good job. I'm glad to see that classical music is not dead

imagine you were walking in this car garage, and then hear this otherworldly sound start playing. I'd imagine that, on that day, i was gonna die from a dramatic heart attack in that parking garage! Season finale. Truly beautiful though.

This is on my "Peaceful" playlist. I listen to your music so often to relax. I've noticed that you guys often gently sway when you sing - I generally don't see this in the English ensembles I follow - different training? Whatever it is, it's beautifully calming and I think your energy comes through your singing. Thankyou. ❤️

This is beautiful. I am enjoying all of your works. It also reminds me of how creative we had to be during the pandemic. My high school aged son and his friends would meet up in a parking garage and have poker games. We were all wondering what happened to our folding card tables and chairs. The D.A.R.E. officer from town (for non-Americans, the local police officer who would go into schools and educate the children about the dangers of drugs, so they knew the kids) would stop by and hang out. He never busted them ( I think they might have had some secret White Claws). I think Officer Phil thought they were rather ingenious.

I'm singing this song with my high school choir for our Christmas concert in two weeks, and getting to hear/watch this has made me infinitely more excited than I already was! Stars is a piece that my conductor/teacher holds very close to his heart, and one that my brother sang when he was in chorus, so I could not be happier to carry on this ethereal legacy of cosmic music! This was such a genuine joy to listen to and I cannot wait to perform it myself, Y'all had me breathless
