In this CAP Tip, we explore the G1000 Search and Rescue (SAR) package - an option available on some G1000-equipped aircraft. The SAR package simplifies the process of entering and managing Parallel Line Search, Expanding Square, and Sector Search patterns. This video will cover basics of operations as well as useful supporting information.

Excellent training video ! In the sector search I recommend making right turns only with the scanner sitting on the rear right seat. The right turns allow both observer and scanner to look out for searching. The observer will not be able to search during the left turns.

Quick question for the author or audience... The DTK (desired track) one sets up initially was stated in this video to be magnetic. However, depending on the magnetic variation in your area, AND depending on what settings you have setup in the G1000 system, you may have to compensate if you want to follow the TRUE North alignments of the CAP Grid system. So, for example, if you know that the variation in your area is 8 degrees W of true north, you would have to add 8 degrees to your DTK heading if your system is set up for magnetic headings. Would someone like to comment on this?

@@moodberry The G1000 can be set to operate in true mode, which is a very viable option in this kind of situation. Just remember to take it back to magnetic for the next guy! OR, you could, as the original poster suggests, use magnetic and input a track that represents the magnetic equivalent of true north. Here in central PA it would be around 011

@@anthonyvallillo422 Thanks for the input. But, since your variation is 011, and where I am is about 008, what would happen to your heading accuracy if you are traveling in East or West courses over time? I would think that for maximum accuracy you should navigate via true headings, not magnetic. Am I overthinking this?

@@moodberry True is, in fact, an easy option for the G1000 and most other GPS navigators. But you would need to travel much farther east or west than a typical CAP search area to run into changes in variation. In the real world, it doesn't really matter if the variation is a degree or so off - few pilots can steer that precise a course anyway!
