Lots of comments from people who have no idea of the history of Puerto Rico..not true about being burned down..reason it was moved was too many mosquitos. Gold was up in the mountains. Tainos were not killed..many died from deseases like small pox and measles etc. Most were integrated and mixed..the slaves were few.mostly taken to Cuba abd Dominican Republic to transfer to mainland USA..those left in Puerto Rico were mainly skeleton crews and those remained in coast near beaches..Spanish crews that were left got tired if waiting for ships to return and took to the mountains while the slaves afraid of finding wild animals like in Africa remained close to shore. Puerto Rico being further away from the continent then the other two islands Cuba and Dominican had less slaves since the interest was more in the continent.

As a Cuban born and raised, I want to provide some historical insight. It's well-documented that enslaved individuals were indeed brought from Africa to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The driving force behind this was the demand for labor in industries like sugar and mining. While Puerto Rico did have slaves, the primary influx of enslaved individuals originated from Africa and was directed toward these other regions. Just to clarify, there is no historical evidence supporting the notion that Tainos from Puerto Rico were transported to Cuba. The movement of enslaved Africans from Africa was the primary source of labor relocation to Cuba.

It's to believe that the natives dwindled down to 1500. I'm sure you read it somewhere, but I doubt that is accurate, as you can see very indigenous features in Puerto Ricans today. I know that many fled to the mountains, but 1500 Tainos were left? I doubt that very much.

This is wrong. Caparra was just a small community that disappeared in 1519 when people left to move to the islet located to north of it (across the bay). That islet became the city of San Juan 2 years later. As a result, the oldest city in the USA is San Juan, PR.

Also, there were Taino villages that existed before the Spanish settlement, and are today cities in Puerto Rico, to name a few: Caguas (Turabo), Utuado (Otoao), Guanica (Guaynia), Humacao (Makao), etc. By the way, today Caparra is not in San Juan or Bayamon region, it is still part of the city of Guaynabo. About 16 cities existed before the Spanish whites took over Boriken.

Interesting you say "Spanish Whites". I wonder what you are comparing them to. Spanish Blacks? You mean the Spaniards who invaded from Europe and took over Central America clear up into North America including what is now Texas and Florida? Forcing indigenous tribes to become Spanish or be wiped out?

The map you show of Caparra in Spain is incorrect. Caparra is an old Roman town in the province of Cáceres which is in the Extremadura Region (West Central Spain). That’s were Ponce de León was from. Your map showed it in Cataluña (Northeastern Spain).

I will absolutely agree. If it WAS U.S.A why isn't it cared for like it's ours?? Why isn't it either a "State" or formalized another way? So, on paper "we" own int, and in reality we treat it like an abused step-child.

*Wrong* "Cahokia" is probably the oldest city in North America predating the Spanish by 500 years and did you know that the Indigenous Mississippi people who inhabited this city defeated the Spanish killing all but 2 or three of them as they fled for the gulf of Mexico.

View beware; there are many inaccuracies in this video. Caparra is the oldest initial settlement in any of the USA's former and present colonies, Puerto Rico being the oldest. In the history and chronicles of Puerto Rico since 1508, there has never been an accurate census of indigenous populations. Many taíno fled to mountainous eastern regions of the island where they held off Spanish incursions for many decades. Others fled to other islands. Of course some of them succumbed to Euro diseases, but in even in the 1755 census demanded by the crown, they simply counted people within short distances of San Juan. There were no checks and balances, so a paltry number was useful to Spain's detractors, even to this day. Huge amounts of gold has always and continues to be an exaggerated claim. The reason why the fable grew legs is because Spanish men were fleeing Puerto Rico when word of Cortez's reports of of what is now Mexico. As a matter of fact, the governor of Puerto Rico declared that Spaniards attempting to leave would be forcibly detained. Yes, it works against our ego, but growing cotton and tobacco was not happening until two centuries later; in the interim it was about producing donkeys, cattle and draft animals for export to other islands. Please do not rely on the words of a casual viewer/visitor.

Yet at the time there were no American colonies (which I am guessing you really mean British colonies.) United States didn't exist even in imagination and the Brits didn't own any of that land. Brits were late comers. What you are talking about was either controlled by Indigenous peoples or "contested" between Spain and Portugal. Eventually "became" American land, but wtf people keep saying WE had Puerto Rico 100 years before the Brits even showed up, and the US? 1776 but we had colonies in 1508 in Puerto Rico?? Never happened. I am assuming you misspoke, and were trying to say something else entirely.

This is true, however the port of Aguada had a small villa (1506) that was burned by Taino uprising (1510) in the Western part of Puerto Rico, all the settlers (men, women and children) of that region were killed, except for one survivor who managed to warn Ponce de Leon, in Caparra. I can visualize the Tainos screaming: "Los blanco no son dioses!" English translation: "The whites are not gods!" At that time , the average Taino slave had a life expectancy of 7 years, under severe brutality.

Correction, Caparra was an Aldea or Hamlet by 1521 not 1508. Secondly, they moved to the islet (known today as "Old San Juan") because of the frequent attacks from Carib Indians and Taino Indians, and due to the mosquitoes as well for better protection. Stop re-writing history with so much Anglo-American bullshit. As far as the ruins, at the site are the remains of his house which is known as "Fuerte de Juan Ponce de Leon that he built in "La Espanola or Dominican Republic" which was more like a typical fortress style of the 15th Century. There's also the Casa Blanca which was been built during his expeditions to "La Florida" for which he was wounded and subcomed to probably from infection and never lived in it but our ancestors did (I am of his descendants.)

Technically, Puerto Rico is not a free nation, but subject to partial democracy and economic dictatorship by the USA. The U.S.A. with greed, occupied many territories around the world, such as Guam, the Marianas, american Samoa, Virgin Islands, Wake Island, Marshall Islands and the nation of Puerto Rico. Overseas U.S.A. also includes Alaska and Hawaii. In 1898, 10% of Puerto Rico were literate, same 10% as the U.S. at that time; a clash of two literate European (Spanish versus English) cultures and Puerto Rico would not submit to the Anglo American. First U.S. territory to ever repel the Anglo American culture in the Americas. Many of our politicians, with no character, and citizens alike, can easily fall for bribes and the rest is history.

But that is ok, just those thieving conquering Americans wrongly stole it from Spain who rightfully stole it from other people? Yea, *smh*

Soooo... Yes, St Augustine is the oldest city in the region now known as The Continental US. But it was founded 45 years before the Brits landed at Jamestown and finally got a colony to take hold. The Pilgrims came 10 years after Jamestown and 99 years after the Spaniards started St Augustine. Funny how it's OUR oldest city when WE didn't exist. Consider it the Oldest Conquered city in the Continental US if anything.

Oldest town in the USA? 😂 What about the Amerindians? They settled the land well before the Europeans came here. Why are so many Americans so short-sighted when it comes to recognising the pre-columbus history of the land? Cahokia en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cahokia Is by far much older and much bigger settled as far back as 600CE it grew to a population of 15000 by 1100CE.
