During a soaking wet May, two friends take on the Cape Wrath Trail Stage 1 from Fort William to Shiel Bridge. Due to our work, it was only ever feasible to do the trail in stages, though one day it would be great to do as a whole trail.
Apparently, even for Scotland it was unusually heavy rain during May - usually a really good month to take on the trail.
A few other adversities also added to the fun and games. We hope you enjoy our particular version of the trail, and how we coped with the trials it threw us almost instantly!

Well done making it to the ferry in time. I know the feeling when time is on the line. I always rush but after years I am learning to give bit more time for exactly these unpredicted situations.

Definitely agree with extra time - sadly on this trip it was a catalogue of disasters getting there so that's why we were caught short!

thankfully the bad bits don't stay long in the memory, while the splendid isolation will have you coming back for more.

Any time of the year it can rain , at least you had the sense to go in May before the dreaded midge comes out ..

Watching new CWT videos for the memories. I started a few days before you. Very wet! Doing the trail again this year to hit all the route variations I missed. I loved every bit of of CWT.

I'm glad it gave you some memories. It truly was wet, but one day I will go back and do the rest. Good luck!

A great video of a great area! I too pre booked that car park with just enough time to get the ferry and I was there a week or two before you and it was closed for a cycling event, panic at the first hurdle 😂. Fortunately being ahead I did get good weather for the whole trail but unfortunately I do not have the skills to document it on you tube. I have footage so will try one day. Thanks once again and look forward to you making the next stage. Matt

Thanks for watching - I'm jealous you got good weather. It would have been 20 x easier in good weather. Don't worry about video production quality just go for it... I watch everything possible to do with this trail, KZfaq is the best place to plan for it!

Well done guys, even by Scottish standards that was grizzly, most important, look after your feet, if they don't work you don't work, the weather was evil and I'm guessing that was part of the issue, glad to see you back off the hill safe and enjoying haggis bonn bones, dad you have them with whisky sauce?? 🤪🤪🤪 it's amazing 👍👍👍

I understand it's day 3 or 4 already, both are bit exhausted but looks Neil is taking slower than usual hiking pace (17:25). is it to do with heavy backpack, what was the weight? I will go as light as possible as it would help me in those terrible bogs. Any gear you should had ditched or any you missed to take. I will for sure take needle and thread to have for emergency gear fix, thanks for sharing gear failures as zipper issue. 20:00 OMG that's steep and I know camera can't capture how steep it is.

Thanks for watching - I thought it was important to show gear choices, failures and how we dealt with them. It was a bit of a baptism of fire, Neal had never done a long distance trail before and a very very wet Cape Wrath was not the ideal first... I think he would agree that gear was too heavy and also things like zips are potential points of failure. Might not matter for a minor zip, but when your entire bag zips closed, it can be and was... an issue. We fixed it by cutting out a section of teeth and re-inserting the zipper pull, then using dental floss to sew closed the gap and create a new zipper stop. My advice is take the minimal equipment possible, and take the simplest of items with minimal possibility of failure.

No, it was always planned that we would do a section and not the whole thing due to time constraints. We planned to get a little further though!

Selamat datang! and thank you for watching. It is a painted stone which my children provided, a tradition to place them on the route.
