I was cycling alone in the woods near nethiebridge april 2019 when this cock buzzed me , stood on a post displaying for a few minutes, then chased me up the road . Every time I started walking away he came after me. Eventually i jumped on the bike and zoomed away and he did not fly after me.

You know it's weird, I never even heard of this bird until today and now KZfaq is sending me all these caipercaillie attack videos! I find them very entertaining and I can't get over the bizarre sounds they make!!!

They're super interesting. Such strangely aggressive animals in a non-aggressive way.
@thermionicemission6355

@@jenss.3613 Well, they are relatively nice to us, might slap you a few times, might even bite, but to other males they are super vicious and I hear they can even cause life-threatening injuries to each other sometimes, I'm sure that's not very common though, after all they still all treasure their lives and could wait till next year to come back stronger. The reason for such aggression is unlike most birds, the alpha takes ALL the females, so winning really matters a lot, quite opposite of doves and such birds, which are very calm because they all mate in the end pretty much and mate for life too, unlike these guys which chose mack-ing as their way of life, or I guess the females made that choice for them..

Sage Grouse (cousins to these guys, who are also called Wood Grouse) do the same and also attack the same way, by beating things with their wings. Capercaillie's and Sage Grouse actually have a wing striking force that's enough to bruise skin and even break bones in some cases.

OK, I did a little reading, and found out that this is actually a type of grouse. The reason they reacted like that is because we're invading their territory, hence the male coming at you. Also, this would be time for mating season, so there might be females nearby.
@jenniferweston7621
@jenniferweston7621 2 жыл бұрын
Addendum: the capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is the world's largest species of grouse, weighing up to fifteen pounds/ seven kilograms. Though that's too small to be truly dangerous to an adult human, they can be rather unpleasant, able to deliver a hard peck and a bruising wing-wack. I don't blame Mr. Acat for avoiding a clash.

Galliformes, like this Capercallie and the American Turkey (Sage Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, and Chicken!) all have display feathers and ways of displaying to females. This male set aside this parcel of land this cyclist unfortunately biked through. He's basically tell him to fuck off, making himself look bigger and threatening that he really is. These birds can pack a punch. (Most can.) but leaving them alone is the best thing you can do. Americans may have had experiences with wild turkey toms during breeding season where they just do not leave you alone. Roosters are similar; they attack and lash out with spurs. I don't know anything about grouse aggression, but they do stand on "Leks" and display, just like this Capercallie and Turkey's do. Galliformes are an incredible family of birds worthy of intense research. They have sexual displays that are entirely dependant on the female. The male is driven to perform his best and if the female does not content their is no mating.

Some kid almost got beaten half to death by one of these near where I live. He managed to get a choking grip on the bird and kicked it away, then it fled. The kid almost lost an eye, was bruised and bleeding all over... beautiful birds, but very aggressive. Personally, I've only ever seen females though, and it was outside of mating season...
