Apologies for a complete dog's breakfast of eras and styles in this mega long collection of various Capital Radio jingles from the station launch in 1973 - many of which were used throughout the rest of the '70s.
Like all local stations at this time, Capital broadcast on FM/VHF (95.8) and AM/Medium Wave (194m/1548kHz). Despite the obvious advantage of FM sound quality, most people were still listening on medium wave in the mid '70s - especially in the car - and so it was the use of "194" that dominated the jingles.
Hear more Capital Radio clips from this era in my playlist: • Capital Radio - Michae...
Thanks for watching - and listening! :)

Capital (and all ILR stations) were all FM stereo from launch. Most people though listened to MW as Radios 1 and 2 were on there. FM didn't become mainstream until Radio went into FM from 1989. Radio 1 listeners had to learn quickly when 275/285m MW (1053/1089KHz AM) closed. It was Laser 558 (KHz) forced the UK stations to convert to KiloHertz and also play more pop music.

In its heyday, around 1975 - 1980, Capital Radio was possibly the best pop radio service, especially after its permanent 1548 kHz transmitter came on air from Saffron Green with a directional erp of 100 kW. It covered all of south east England and was generally regarded as a licensed, more adult orientated reincarnation of the best of the 1960s offshore stations Caroline and London. Of course, by then the former offshore audience was about 10 years older, but certainly Capital sought to recapture the same people.

@@RetroRadioUK 210 was generally an easy listening station. Beacon was a soft rock/country rock/soul US West Coast-style station managed and programmed by a couple of American and Canadian truck drivers. No competition there, however, Gavin McCoy and Mike Baker both began on Beacon and did stints on 210, as did Peter Craig much later on 😉

Oh my there's some classics in here , great sounding jingles and congrats to capital for steering away from the usual style radio jingles it gave you a distinct sound . Chris Rainbow in there somewhere as well as K. E. They did have some great jingle packages through this era and the 80's and some great in-house production as variants .Sadly these good times don't last all the radio stations sound practically the same these days . We have reverted back to the days before the pirates broke the monoply , now it's the commercial chain that has bought out all our local stations and turned them into one conglomerate that pumps out what they think we want to hear rather than what we actually do , the industry needs a good shake up again

The jingles for ILR in the 1970s/80s were designed as fillers to compensate for the needletime rules. ILR stations were allowed to play only 9 hours per day of music. To get around that rule and give the impression that more music was played, ILRs played a lot of music that wasn't counted as needletime such as live music, library music from album combinations and some imports (especially dance music from the USA). And of course the large array of jingles, which often included jingles of at least 1 minute's duration. Capital and Beacon were experts at this format which "cheated" the needletime rule.

6:45 is my favourite, it’s evocative of a late night DJ playing it just after the midnight news. It perfectly captures late night and I think it is sung by Madeleine Bell.

Eradicated by the corporate suits who bought out the ILR stations franchises and turned them into a soulless cacophony of dumbed down playlists & presenters in the continuous nay relentless pursuit of profit. Not an original nor dynamic thought between the lot of them and probably most of them don't even listen to the end result!
