I tried being self sufficient but after spending too many hours fishing for a mending book, I went to a village buying and selling and producing beds and paper until I was able to purchase all the mending books I wanted. Capitalism certainly has it's benefits, though I didn't appreciate the price gouging so much. Competition might've been nice in that scenario.

I personally know people that get several forms of welfare together and end up pretty well off without working. We actually have a good amount of socialism mixed with are capitalism right now (at least in the US don't know what you are from). Kali Southpaw's argument is directed at those socialism policies, which might not apply to anyone here because every country has different laws.

@viperstriker4728
@viperstriker4728 4 жыл бұрын
@@SlayingSin Not directly. Capitalism encourages automation and that automation removed the need for slave labor in the north thus freeing slaves. But at the same time the cotton gin (also a product of capitalism) made cotton profitable but required slaves for the none automated parts. As technology advances from manual labor to intellectual labor (maintaining fields to maintain machines the take care of the fields) slave labor becomes less and less profitable which is then removed by capitalism. So I agree with you but it is a lot more complicated then that and technically any economy that encourages technological development would do the same thing about slavery eventually.

Friendly suggestion of readying "the machine" by marx and conquest of bread by kropotkin. You def seem like a utilitarian libertarian and make some decent points. You forget about exploitative labor, resource hoarding and most importantly to this colonialism. The resources you pull from the caves are never on lands you "own" and then you go in to a small village and use resources you've either harvested or come across and inject wealth into that community creating hierarchy and inequality.

there's something wrong with your idea in this video, and thats the suggestion of capitalism existing for 1000's of years... trade is not capitalism. @@thrivefancentral3374 That is very true. What he must acknowledge is that under any economic system, trade exists. A capitalist nation, though, produces more goods, and can trade and exploit capitalism and use greatly to boost its economy. Socialism, although it can trade, can not thrive as much as capitalism can since it calls for a Marxist manner of using a progressive income tax and punish people on the basis of their income.

@Ákos Dánffy Yes, if you don't stop the strongest players from snuffing out their competitors. A monopoly can only happen when only one supplier is left for a given good/service. This is why I think the free market is important, but larger players have to be regulated carefully. When nobody else is providing nicer jobs to get the better employees, better service, and better product at better prices: The one supplier of those things can do whatever they want, which will inevitably be to absolutely abuse everyone to get as much money as possible. Unfortunately the same thing happens with government monopolies, but the problem is not caring about the quality of work because the outcome is the same for the worker.

Wait, none of these qualities (either good or bad) described in this video are exclusive to capitalism. Other economic systems can have these qualities too, even something outdated like feudalism. A capitalist system just means you can have private ownership over a firm and that commodities are produced for a profit. This is usually what would qualify an economic system as capitalist and it wasn't even mentioned :(
@rustywidget4813
@rustywidget4813 4 жыл бұрын
Hey ToyCat, it's good to see you're learning! I just have a few things I'd like to point out that you seem to be confused about. Marxism isn't an alternative system to capitalism, it's an analytical method which ironically leads to many of the same conclusions you reached in this video. Also, capitalism is only a few hundred years old, not a few thousand. It evolved from mercantilism in the 16th or 17th century. The one piece that you're really missing is the fact that no amount of regulation can ever 'reign in' capitalism and tap into its strengths safely, for two reasons- 1) no matter how much regulation you make, capitalists will always have enough money to pay lawyers and middlemen to figure a way around it and build a monopoly, and more importantly 2) in a capitalist country, the state is controlled by capitalists, not the other way around. The state literally cannot stop capital from chasing profits, and any appearance of the state regulating capitalism is simply a compromise that capitalists know they must make in order for capitalism to function. For example; things as simple as the 40 hour work week, the weekend, minimum wage, and even just the right to be paid in actual money rather than Company Store Fun Bucks were things that anarchists, socialists, and trade unionists had to fight the government for in *actual bloody civil wars* that involved the *US military bombing US citizens* over the last 2 centuries. Workers made it clear they wouldn't tolerate conditions that were as bad as they were, and instead of recognizing that the workers' cause was just, capitalists employed the police and military against protesters with deadly results, held mock trials, and put union leaders in prison for life over charges they knew were false to make examples of them, all to protect their right as business owners to force people to work 16 hour shifts 7 days a week. It was only when they realized people were willing to die for fairer labor laws that they caved to the demands- and it's a logical move. You can't make money if all your workers fight you to the death and destroy your private property. In a socialist country, like Vietnam (perhaps one of the best examples of socialism with a central government to date), companies in the country are very interested in profits and there is a strong market economy, but the nation puts the lives of its people ahead of those interests, and because of that, they have had 0 deaths and only 280 cases during the ongoing pandemic in a country that shares a border with China. It turns out socialism actually IS the compromise you're looking for- a market with voluntary trades where necessities like food and housing are provided to all as needed but luxuries are available at a higher price and companies can still compete in a regulated market where monopoly formation is very challenging. Marx saw the same problems you see with capitalism and offered socialism and communism as solutions- not replacements that must be installed through bloody revolution but a series of small changes that make corrections for the fundamental flaws. To be clear, I have a lot of problems with Lenin and Mao and the states they created and the methods they used, and there are even a lot of things about Vietnam I don't particularly like, but this comment is already on the long side and I'm trying to stay focused. Feel free to contact me directly if you ever want to chat about these kinds of things, cat to cat.

So just some 2am binging of Toycat and I thought I'd leave a comment even if It's late as they get. This is why I like your videos on this stuff. I know way too many people who would take that and turn it into a marxist rant and go all in on that capitalism is the greatest sin the world has ever known. Though you, rather respectfully, brought up our biggest issues in the modern world, with I believe the most urgent being the mega-corporations. As for the Climate Change and Paris Agreement, I'm of the mind that there are certainly problems that need to be addressed to do with Climate Change, but really targeting the USA like we're the villain is just ignoring the biggest problems on the planet for Global Warming, chief of which being China. As for the USA being the 2nd largest, we haven't exactly had the ability to focus on it. We've kind of been having to be the big brother of the world since the 50s. I'm hoping that if the small angry asian man (Not sure if my comment will be removed if I bring up his name) is gone, and hopefully the USA can continue at least setting the hatchet aside with Russia, then we can start shifting our focus to our own nation and actually have intelligent conversations about how we will help with climate change without ruining everyone's lives. The problem isn't generally denial, it's that both sides have their priorities out of wack and don't show each other any respect.
@SomeSayApple
@SomeSayApple 4 жыл бұрын
Only read you last paragraph tbh, but I do have to interject a little. I appreciate the way you think and the goal of becoming better. The role of big brother was unnecessary after a while. There was no have to yet the government seems to have thought this needs to stay this way. It's a good Coverstory plus it holds up a strong patriotic identity. For one, wars have been started on straight up lies for securing resources and many human rights were trampled in the process of endless war. The US has been rated the biggest thread to world peace by the rest of the world. I truly hope that the United States are able and willing to work out their flaws. It's honestly quite sad and terrifying to see this once great nation fail.

That free rider example confused me even though I've studied economics for years and was well aware of it. The example I've heard is for a fire department regarding terraced, or semi detached houses where fire can spread from a non payer to a payers home so the non payer becomes a free rider and gets their home extinguished without paying for fire insurance because their neighbour pays and would suffer from the fire otherwise. This would theoretically lead to nobody buying insurance buy I think it would more likely end up an agreement between cohabitants of the same building that could easily be facilitated by the insurance company.

Thoughtslime made a really good video about capitalism in minecraft and how the economic system on the server Hermitcraft is what capitalists think capitalism is, or at the very least what they want capitalism to be. That in minecraft you're put in a world with infinite resources ripe for the picking, and the only limit is the amount of time you want to spend on climbing up the pyramid.

There are a few issues with this video. First is the claim that trade or barter systems have existed for thousands of years. This is a myth that was popularized by Adam Smith in “The Wealth of Nations” (1776), which has no evidence. Secondly is the implication that large corporations are made up of large numbers of people who individually contribute to its decisions. Only a relatively small number of people - such as the CEO, VP’s, and board of directors - make the high-level decisions, while low-level employees and low-volume stock holders have very little if any influence on what a corporation does. Third, you don’t mention the relationship between supply and demand nor cost vs. profit margin when you talk about how sellers would prefer to charge the highest price and buyers pay the lowest price.

Wow this video was very very good. Extremely good for how short it was as well. It gave me a lot of cool build ideas in Minecraft (that you will hopefully see one day) and also gave me some really good ideas in real life. I think I'm going to create a website that links people with different skill sets to be able to essentially trade without the use of currency. For example. Let's say someone is an iron worker and posts on this website that they want a wooden table custom made for them, then everyone on the website that has the skill set of "woodworker or carpenter" (whatever term you wanna go with) then lets say one of them woodworkers replies to their post saying I really want a custom wooden table. I'm an iron worker, is there anything you would like custom made for you involving metal. And then they can negotiate and come up with an agreement. Sounds like a cool idea however idk if it will work because humans are much lazier than they were even 100 years ago. People might just think "I'd rather just buy any table from a store" or "I'd rather just go to a mechanic shop to get my car fixed" etc. What are your thoughts on that Toycat?
@JohnyDaison
@JohnyDaison 4 жыл бұрын
Well, you are far from the first with that idea. Look up RBE (Resource based economy). There are groups of people around the world trying to get it working. But I think that getting rid of currency completely is not the right idea. There is a game which goes really in-depth on human civilization evolution, it's called Eco. It's designed to be an educational game from the ground up, but also is a voxel world like Minecraft. But unlike Minecraft, cooperation is necessary. It simulates ecology, economy, politics and all resources are finite.

SafelySwift Communism played a more direct role in these deaths. Aside from starvation (Which seems to also occur in Communist societies) most of the factors you mentioned are partially effected by personal choice, which is something that Communism doesn’t provide as well. Capitalism has done its fair share of damage, but it’s also lead to much of the innovation that allows us to thrive today, it’s the problem and the solution. On the other hand, Communism is still much worse for the amount it’s killed in such a short time. That’s my opinion at least, you’re entitled to your own.

You are mistaking capitalism. What you explained in this video was actually corporatism on top of capitalism. Corporatism is what happens when the market is attached to a government and big corporation are protacted by the state leading to monopoly industries. In the scenario of a free market, what real captalism is about, if only one person produces bells and raises its price. It will lead to a big opportunity to more people manufacture bells and sell it lower than the previous guy as there is a good profit margin. A good way to undestand better what you was trying to explain is to read more about libertarism and free market. I hope being helpful to someone, spread knowledge not ignorance. ; )

@@gabrielnunes1712 Libertarianism is unstable, that's why I'm a statist. Otherwise a large company will become or bind with a state and exploit its power to become monopolist, that, unlike the democratic state, is not controlled by lower and middle classes properly. Why to compete when you can ban competition for your own profit? Honestly, I think that the state is a sort of large corporation that owns land, has hierarchy and capital, but rather than autocratic like private companies, the governing body is elected by all classes. Unless it's a state of older model, these are also autocratic - feudal, fascist, socialist states that is. For the state to work properly, it must neither have too much power over general populace, nor too feeble structure that private hierarchies can bend for their aims.

You need to take some of European ways of governance, not just decrease influence of private actors but also reform prison system into one focused on repairing people rather than attempting to punish them into self-repair, and establish a proper multi-party system. Another issue is high GINI coefficient, higher even than in China or Russia... Russia so known of rich oligarchs contrasting with gopniks and common people.
