Capitalism Without Accountability at Root of Suez Canal Shipping Crisis, Says Scholar Laleh Khalili

A Suez Canal service firm now says the huge container ship blocking the canal has been refloated and is on the move. The 200,000-ton ship, the Ever Given, got stuck on March 23, blocking one of the world’s most important trade routes, which is used for about 12% of all global trade. The impact of the canal shutdown has raised new questions about global trade practices, including the reliance on massive cargo ships, the conditions of workers on the vessels, and environmental degradation. “As years have gone by, the ships have gotten bigger and bigger and bigger,” says Laleh Khalili, professor of international politics at Queen Mary University of London. She notes that it was an earlier closure of the canal, during the Suez Crisis in the 1950s, that led shipping companies to build ever larger “megaships” like the Ever Given.

Been thru the Suez a few times in my Navy career. They NEED to dredge it to make it much wider at some points. I mean LOOK at the overhead picture of that massive ship! Even if it never got stuck and turned sideways, other ships would STILL have a time trying to pass it going in the opposite direction!

Agreed, there's not enough room for error if a large ship starts to drift. Another option could be to twin the canal south of Bitter Lake and have one lane for north bound ships and another for south bound ships. If one got blocked, there's still be the other.

Also, dredging deep channels, then maintaining those channels, creates massive destruction on the seafloor and often disturbs, thus both concentrates and disperses buried contaminated sediments created by poorly-regulated industries near industrialized ports.

There’s a video around that talks about how shipping companies have been increasing the size of their ships by several 100% over the past 5 decades. They do it without consideration for infrastructures and without discussion. The ports are expected to keep up or just lose the business. I know the Panama Canal was upgraded for it and is already to small again for some of the ships. Looks like the Suez Canal also. Time for some payback I’d guess. At the least these giant boats need tug escort. And the companies can pay for future upgrades, rather than the taxpayer. Elaine Chow for instance...

it's ignorant to say that the canal was "built" by the French and the British! the french and the British "owned" the canal, but those who "built" the canal were 1.5 Million Egyptian presents forced by the colonizers to build the canal in horrible working conditions, using shovels and buckets and enduring massive cholera outbreaks that killed thousands of them over 10 years. all while the french company's stock was being sold for thousands of dollars (in today's money) in the stock market in 1858, and when it was finally nationalized in 1956, its ownership, however, didn't really transfer to the Egyptian people, but the brutal military generals who were left in charge during decolonization, and those vicious mass-murdering generals are still in control of the canal and all of Egypt today. In fact, one of those generals just committed the largest massacre in modern Egyptian history in 2013, where he killed over 1000 demonstrators in a single day (12-hour window to be exact) and burned over 200 of the bodies. And until this very day, those who "built" the canal don't "own" it, and the murderers who own it are still being empowered and supported by the old colonizers.

The news are all saying how the Americans were going to pay higher fuel prices. Another news was trying to jack up our fuel prices; talked about all the barrels of oil that go thru the canal. But, there's been an oil glut for some years now and because of the pandemic people aren't going anywhere; so even more excess oil. And more deliveries doesn’t use the same fuels as millions of car now setting idle. And the airline was worried that people would keep using Zoom after the virus.

Lost passage fees for Egypt is really small potatoes. Most of the ships that were delayed will still be passing through the canal and Egypt will still get most of its fees.

seems like all (for profit) capitalist international trade relies on exploitation. the conglomerates that avoid billions in taxes, the governments that use tax dollars to subsidize it, the environmental exploitation and cost of massive amounts oil used to move mountains of junk that doesn't last, that ends up in our oceans and landfills, all of it using the exploitation labor of developing countries, and all of this for a disposable product economy that must continually recycle itself in search of a profit margin... this of course is unsustainable... and it's slowly strangling the planet and everything that relies on it.

I'm still baffled how a strong wind could force a tanker of this HUGE SIZE and WEIGHT to cause this situation for days! It just doesn't make sense to me, perhaps someone in Physics can explain this to me.

These huge ships also cause marine damage due to the dredging needed to provide the depth they need at the pears they dock at.

@perseuspixl2296
@perseuspixl2296 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately - because it means that the ice is disappearing - the Artic route will soon be an option in the Asia/Europe trade ... Advantage for shipping will be a much shorter sailing-distance & faster transit compared to the present route. Will make China & FarEast production even more competitive i.e more stuff can be shipped cheaper& faster, giving more buy&throw-away-consumption in Europe and finally more waste/trash/pollution.
