A long long time ago when I was about 18, I dreamed of working in a studio like this. I walked into the Capitol lobby and asked the front desk who I could speak with to apply for an entry level position. Security immediately escorted me out of the building. Now I finally get to see it! Thanks for sharing.

One of the most amazing and historic places in recording history. Those rooms are pure magic! Paula Salvatore is a legend as well. Being able to get to work with her and be on sessions there in ‘94 was something I’ve never forgotten.

That’s a better home studio set up than 90% of us gen-z folks. I’ve worked with a number of tape machines (I record on a 16 Channel 1” machine now, but I’ve had everything from 50’s Ampex 4 tracks and more modern 8 tracks) and I’ve found what makes the most difference is the console you’re mixing with not the machine or even number of tracks (that just makes it more convenient).

Steve is a great and nice guy. Thanks for the video. Had a second visit to their ATMOS Studio recently to see how the monitors and updates worked. We’d recorded at another much less logistically convenient ATMOS studio, and would much rather record locally here in LA. The room is great. As always. The new PMC’s are an improvement in EQ and balance. But the room is still poorly implemented for ATMOS. And the PMC cause some new issues. They are PMC of course. Even on rendering playback we were forced to monitor in stereo several times. This was because of “glitches” in playback even in binaural. Several major formats are just not supported here yet…either. This may be addressed or not in the future. The statement was that ATMOS is still open to interpretation and its movie industry basis is “still problematic” for music. I agree with them. At least mostly. For now, we will still have to travel for what we are looking for. This is not just because like many we are not big PMC monitor fans. It is mostly because the setup is still not ready for at least our definition of prime time. Were this a movie post studio with the much larger budgets and greater ATMOS experience they’d likely get D-. But since it is Music ATMOS where studios have major problems with ATMOS, Steve and the team are well above average. And they are some of the nicest and most professional people in the game. This said, in addition to glitches and phasing issues with vague image problems and resonance and reflection problems because of many ATMOS Music problems, the sound stage even when rendered down to binaural is just bad, bad bad. When rendered down to stereo as needed to avoid glitches it is just worse. When listening in full Music ATMOS though it is as impressive at times as it is fatiguing and frustrating most times.

@@mv1692 the 1073 was an earlier model and simpler preamp. I believe the 31102 were just 1084s but a console model. Either way to me the 31102s don’t have as much natural noise to me. One just makes me think of rock and the other makes me think more versatile. I’m not sure exactly the different components on the inside but more than likely just a whole bunch of caps and a transistor.
