My first car was a 1973 Ford Capri when I was 16 yrs old. I remember I could get a bit of rubber power shifting into 3rd gear! This video makes we wish I still had that car.

Tremendous...that was me in the black MK2 with 2 silver stripes down the door. It was a 3.1 and went like a rocket, doing a handbrake turn! It was taken at the 3 counties show ground, it was our first show as we had just formed the Potteries Capri Club. We had some extremely nice cars and started off with over 30 members locally. The producers of this Programme asked if I could do a burnout but I said the ground was too dry and would snap a halfshaft. I did a perfect 360 degree handbrake turn, came back and they said they didn't have the camera going...so I did it again....I was too close to the left and it shot a load of bricks all over the wheel arch chipping the paint!! Great memories, great cars and I still own a 5.7 V8 powered capri.

Got a brand-new '73 Capri too back in the day. It was a V-6, dark green with tan interior and sunroof. IMO the styling went down hill after '73 starting with the '74 hatchback. Looked a bit more chunky than streamlined. Great video and I was blown away by the Capri song. Anyone know who sang it?

Excellent video. I Was fortunate to own all 3 models. Also in the past I ran a Capri Club and did all the shows and the stand always got a big public attention..Sadly now I don't have my cars but at the time always enjoyed owning them and met some very friendly people..

I remember when my dad and I went to collect his new mk2 Cortina, in the showroom under wraps was I found out when we were invited to the launch event of the Capri. Then in my early 20ies I bought a mk1 Capri 1600GT in Fern Green, black vinyl roof. I drove it on a motoring holiday through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. What a memorable time

Mr dad had one of the first 1600GT XLRs - gold with black vinyl roof. I started my driving in a mini, then an MGB roadster, but fell in love with TAR 6M - a white Capri 3000 V6 automatic in a car showroom window in Letchworth. Great fun beating the lads off the line at traffic lights by simply flooring the pedal! Lovely car. sold it for £1,000 in 1976 when I was given a company car and that was the deposit on my first home.

From every direction the Capri Mk1, 2 or 3, with its combination of swooping curves, pin-sharp lines and purposeful aggressive looks, is the ultimate eye catcher! I had a beautiful Mk3 finished in metallic grey. With some creative tuning my dad (50-year mechanic) and I found that it could easily crack 100mph & still knock on the door of 40mpg! It met all my expectations and then went beyond. People would notice the Capri & fail to see a Porsche, Merc' or Ferrari. One Merc driver even stopped me at a filling station, saying he wished he'd never sold his Capri! We beefed up the suspension & I'll always remember a few evenings later, when an Audi Quattro & I had a very ... ahem... 'exciting'... late night drive through 20 miles of twisty countryside roads. The suspension & tuning upgrades allowed me to brake later & accelerate earlier through the curves which is why he could never pass until the road went dead straight for three miles along a section well-known by locals - there was little to beat a 2.5 turbo 4WD in those days, but Audi-man loved the challenge...! 😎😎 I get to drive an utterly awesome Pontiac Firebird nowadays, but I'd still put a Capri in the garage right beside it if I could!

My first Capri was a 2.0GL. It was a 1979 model on a V plate. I bought it in 1989 and paid 1000 pounds. It was an awesome car for an 18 year old and caused much envy amongst my peers. My second was a 2.8i on an X plate. It was a 1981 model and only had a 4 speed (manual) box. I knew the era was over when little hot hatches started to overtake me. That said, it was the sudden hike in insurance prices that made me sell it. My third and last was a 2.0S on an A plate that I drove down to Valencia in Spain and back without any problems. in fact, none of them ever caused me any problems and were always a joy to drive. Happy memories.

I remember the Probe. Funny that its design is credited to American Ford, which also designed the Capri. Apparently it didn't score well with women, due to its name. We also had Merkur, which were imported Sierras and Scorpios. The Mondeo was the Contour (as bad a name as "Probe") when sold by Ford, and Cougar (meaning an older woman chasing young men) when sold by Mercury. I had a '96 Ford Contour with the 2.5L(?) V6 and it was a fun car. Couldn't see out the back and had to replace several mirrors due to them being knocked off by pickup trucks.

As a boy in the 70's I loved Capri's (especially the MK2s).When I got mechanical aware and stared reading MOTOR,CARS AND CARS CONVERSION plus other magazines I was not too impressed with the performance. The 1.6 and 2.0 liter were the most popular in Jamaica , I was shacked to learn that their was also a 1.3(who would want that for such a large sports car I asked myself ?) The 2.0L was my favorite but after learning the principle behind making this car I learn to appreciate them. Also to add,in the first line of a U.S. auto magazine read "The Ford Capri is one of our favorite cars". I how ever wish Ford had given them the Cosworth treatment but would be able to afford one?

The 3 L. was the most talked about it the early days, their many around and was considered the best but fuel consumption was the issue. The 2.8 L cab. model, imparted from the US second hand, were command in the early 80's but the rest you mention were rear.

Lets face it, back then in the early 70's there was no real competition. Dreadful Austin Morris cars etc. Across the pond, the Yanks had Mustangs, Cougars, and many other great looking cars. When the Capri was introduced, it looked kind of "Cool" a kind of scaled down muscle car for the European market. Its no wonder if was successful, because it filled a gap that had existed for so long back then.

@Ian Ingham Very odd indeed that the 1961 Consul Capri / Classic is not mentioned. Same engine as in the early Cortina, and the Classic featured the same rear window design as the Ford Anglia. I bough a Classic in late 1967 ( my first car) A cherry red color. Which suffered an engine bay fire due to a fuel leak. The damage was repaired and the car resprayed. There were not many Capri and Classic in Australia, more common in New Zealand. I liked the car, which was traded in September 1970 on a Ford Falcon GTHO Phase 2 351 V8 (which had hairy legs) Mine was Metallic blue of which only 998 were made in that color as near as I can recall. Of course my dad who had a 1968 XT 4.2 litre 6 Cyl Falcon (the same engine that was uses in the Sunbeam Alpine, decades ago) >.My dad freaked out,it was almost half the price of a 3 bedroom house at that time.. That was a lot of money. Not that my dad could do much about it as I had started My Military Service in January 1970. The Consul Capri was a completely different car and actually wasn't the first car that Ford used the Capri name on. That honour is owned by Ford's Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri way back in 1951. The Capri that most people remember is of course the 1969 through to 1986 Ford Capri's. The name has been used on US Mercury Comet Capri's from the mid 1960s, the US Mercury Capri from 1978 through 1986 and the Aussie Ford Capri convertible from 1989 through to 1994.

I read that the Mustang was named after a World War II plane... but that some Ford bigwig didn't want any plane emblems on the car and so they went for the horse motif instead. But the original motivation for "Mustang" was a plane, not a horse.

I honestly thought that they were completely shit in pretty much every respect until I owned a few by default and then I saw the light. That is obviously not to ignore their many faults. I owned four including a good 2.8i Special but regret not having a 3.0S MkIII which I borrowed once and personally regard as the pick of the bunch. The MkII 2.0 Ghia auto was the most enjoyable of the ones I did own despite not adding up to much on paper.

I've never understood why 302 Windsor engines were never offered in Capri's, Granada's, Cortina's and Sierra's in Europe. I had a mk3 Ford Granada 2.9 EFI when I lived in England, then when I moved here I bought a Ford LTD Crown Victoria with a 302 EFI. The Crown Victoria is over half a ton heavier yet gets a couple of mpg better with its 302 than the Granada did with its 2.9. They are both 150 hp, but the 302 has a lot more torque. So surely the Windsor engine would have been a much better option in the European Ford's than the thirsty little Cologne engine. More torque and more fuel efficient.

Although the 1960s Mustang would never have worked in Europe, Ford did sell European Capris in the USA under the Mercury nameplate. Much like other European Fords that would follow - the XR4Ti and Scorpio come to mind - the Capris were not successful for the same sort of reason as why the Mustang would have flopped across the pond: the wrong-sized car for the market. Why buy a 2.3L Capri that costs more than a V8 Mustang? (It does have to be said that the early 1970s Capris supposedly outperformed the Mustang II cars of the same era because of choking US emissions standards. The revival of the Mustang as a performance car came in the 1980s.)

+Bailey&Stella Productions the UK Ford Cortina was sold as their captive import until 1970 where poor sales led to FoMoCo dealerships marketing the POS Pinto (a 1970s firetrap) - subsequent Ford of Europe products were imported by the Lincoln-Mercury dealerships where the Mercury division handled sales (USA market Capris were sourced from Germany and did not have Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury badging where it was sold by the Mercury division as a standalone product (same as the 1960-61 Comet after the demise of Edsel where the Comet was the next Edsel product but became Mercuryed in 1962 as part of its product portfolio; some USA market Capris may have Mercury badges which was tacked on by some L-M dealers)

03:38 And there are the cops in their ZEPHYR MK III ^ Cylinder 2553 cc (the 4 Cylinder 1703 cc Consul Engine did not have the grunt.. The car was too heavy for. the 4 cylinder. It struggled up hill. An Uncle sold his Consul and bought the 4 Cylinder Zephyr - BIG mistake ( and both cars were black) -- Another Uncle had a Vauxhall Cresta -- It was a better car with smoother engine, nice and quiet and I liked the progressive strip speedometer that changed color according to speed. The Mark IV Zephyr / Zodiac / Executive looked very nice but still under powered The Rover 3.0 Litre ate it for breakfast.

Darwinians comment about the naming of the Mustang is, I beieve, more like myth than a substantive fact. To be fair though, this Mustang P51 figjter from WW2, story is often trpeated in respectec auto magazines so there is some autheticity given to the P51 story as being the true story of the naming of the Mustang car. Its true that during the late 1940s & early 1950s, fighter jet & rocket design did play a large part in some of the design aspects of many American cars. But these were modern aircraft designs rather than old piston fighters. Even given the time of the Mustangs inception - probably some time in 1958/59 - Fords designers would have viewd the then elderly P51 as less than an ideal part of the design which offered carefree freedom of the road and a modern styling not normally associated a tweny year old fighter plane - as remarkable as the P51 was for its time. But then, I wasn't there when Ford execitives and in Madison Avenue speak, were running flags up poles while looking around to see who saluted them.
