how would you guys avoid what happened to the boat at 5:20? would it be safe to go out at 45 degree angle instead of head on or that's even worst?

Angle to left would've capsized ...engine needed trimmed down and pull back throttle when about to crest wave.

His biggest mistake was trying to throttle over the wave crests. It sounded like he was trying to climb the hills , as it were. That’s why he continually was launching off the tops of the waves.

Great vid as always. Looks to me like the boat needed to be straight on to the waves. Also, it looks like he wasn't trimmed right; too much weight to port. That and the angle he took the wave (damn, totally out of the water!) almost caused him to go over to port.

In those conditions guy at 5:20 should have been hyper vigilant and noticed the wave coming at a diagonal on him. He could have steered into it w less speed would have been less dramatic. By yourself is one thing but w passengers your the captain big responsibility. Craft wasn’t the most seaworthy I’ve seen either! Great vid! Ty

These waves are tight, sharp and stacked up, from the current/tide running out meeting the ocean waves/swell coming in... Up on the great lakes, ALL our waves are like that. Lol regular ocean waves can be big wide flat MFs till they get reeeaaally big. Great lakes waves around the 6 foot mark would be dangerous for a number of the boats in this video the way they're being driven. Lol. I'd imagine if you saw some guys from northern Lake Michigan/Lake Superior/Lake Ontario coming through this inlet you'd see the waves instinctively handled way better. It's nothing personal, it's just that the vast majority of guys who spend most of their time on the ocean are used to the big rollers. Not the tall, steep, very closely spaced slammers like you get right here. Good friend of mine who used to fish out of Massachusetts in 40 foot seas in a 65 foot longliner, would get scared shitless when we'd go out in 14 footers in a 90 foot steel hulled carferry way up at the northern end of Lake Michigan. He used to always say "These lakes are Fucked, the waves suck ass, it's like steaming straight into the teeth on a saw blade."

Gentlemen gentlemen you know that boats overloaded . What you care you ain't going out there !! I have watched that Pursuit launch itself off that wave many many times . And for the life of me I can't figure how she righted / corrected herself . It's painfully obvious to me the skipper had little or nothing in that vessels correcting itself . The only thing that saved her I believe is how she hit the second wave that actually righted her . Also it is obvious to me IMHO a lesser boat would not have been able to experience that . I have looked below deck of Pursuits and their sister Tiaras and I was very impressed with what I saw . Please keep the videos coming .

ur supposed to catch a crest and try and plane it over as best you can (im in shit like that all the time in a 23ft grady). Not having a huge load of people helps, speed helps, and timing the wave at the crest is important 12-15 knots minimum for rough stuff like that. They just clearly just never been in rough seas or a boat, which is why research is important and watching fellow boaters to judge the seas. But the reason of the boat almost sinking was not enough power and too much weight in the back making planing harder and way more vertical on single outboards. They will not plain with too much weight on the back once they did get it leveled tho it handled like it was somewhat supposed to. They had no reason being in that crap with that many people for a booze cruz, some boat owners are just stupid and don't know common courtesy, actually lots.(boat drives by going 40mph 30ft from ur anchor line) typical weekend boaters.

Ill never forget the time we almost flipped a 15 foot Boston Whaler! We were on a weekend trip with my Uncle. He had a 57 foot yacht and towed the 15 ft Boston Whaler as his dingy. My friend asked his dad if we could take the Boston Whaler out? He said yes so we went out and played a little bit then my friend said hold an and watch this. He hit a large wave we were having fun until. We hit a wave and the boat was straight up and down. I was going to move to the front. I quickly realized that was nt going to happen i went to stand up and my feet were planted on the back of the seat!

It was close to a flip, but luck went his way. A little more throttle could have pushed it past the balance point. I think the "captain" was having some fun with his passengers and just over-did it a bit. I have also seen boats lose a transom slamming flat onto a wave on landing like that.

I have very little boating experience (my high school buddy had a little 14 foot runabout and I’ve rented a few pontoons on a lake). I do however have a decent amount of common sense. Although I’ve never been to Haulover Inlet, somehow it just doesn’t seem like a good place for boats less than 20-24 feet. Despite the captains and passengers whooping and waving with few if any wearing a life jackets on, they can’t be having a great time getting almost thrown out of the boat. 99% of these are probably locals. They haven’t heard about the infamous Haulover Inlet?? Come on people, make a 180 and head back to the dock before you kill some of your passengers!!
