@@MegMage unrelated but just to make sure you see this message I replied here Tony: did you know? Steve: I didn't know *it was him* Tony: don't bullshit me I said did you k ow Steve: yes.. In winter soldier, when Steve and Natasha are trapped in the bunker with the Arnim Zola A:I computer Arnim talks about hydras new strategy of making the world a more dangerous place so the people give up their freedom willingly in the name of security. And finishes saying 'afterall... Accidents WILL happen..' and shows CCTV of the car crashing and newspaper headlines saying Tony's parents died in a car crash. Steve knew they were assassinated by hydra. Thats why he qualifies his answer as 'i didn't know IT WAS HIM". He's not lying. Nor quite lying through omission. But telling a very specific truth.

Tony's sense of vengeance was sub-fueled by his guilt. That interaction he had with Alfre Woodard at MIT about her son Charlie, and any other innocents that died in Sokovia, the guilt he felt over that, is the oxygen that makes the vengeance burn out of control. The guilt turns into fear, fear causes Tony to go overboard trying to get things into a controlled state. Tony wants guardrails for safety, and order. Steve is more comfortable in the chaos because he trusts his own morality ("the safest hands are still our own"), and he has a soldier's view of casualties ("this job... we try to save as many people as we can. sometimes that doesn't mean everybody. if we can't find a way to live with that, maybe next time no one gets saved"). There are compelling arguments for each side.

Beyond that Cap is arrogant and afraid in a very different way from Tony. When he says "we're not leaving this rock with one civilian on it" in Age of Ultron it was a profound personification of hubris fueled by guilt. Like frankly he should have been locked up for war crimes then risking tens of millions to billions who never gave him the right to make that decision for them, he who remains let them get lucky because that was a crazy decision. When he refuses to sign on to rules he believes may be unjust (even when they could obviously break them later, they have Tony's AI) he's being a moralizing jackass, unwilling to compromise to keep the peace because of the chance of something bad absolutely ensuring something bad will happen. He definitely votes 3rd party with that kind of mindset, never compromising your morality to be party to some amount of injustice that absolutely prevents greater evil. He doesn't want to live in a world with rules, rather one of personal trust and relationships he in fact wants it to need him cause its the only thing he's ever been good at because he never got a chance to try anything else after getting his powers. It's like Napoleon, or Otto von Bismark - a system that only works and can be trusted when under the influence of a great man who commands the respect of others is an institution that is doomed to fail. Being unwilling to countenance an institution that works well without him is a manifestation of his fear of going home and trying something he's scared he would screw up and hurt others in (like being in a relationship with Peggy or anyone else). He's absolutely more comfortable with dying than retiring until he see's it as his duty to try. Tony is scared of the fight, Cap is scared of there being a fight without him because he trusts himself and his team rather than anyone else. He's a good leader of a team, but a terrible leader of anything more than that. He's a captain, he's no general. It's always funny that people don't see that flaw in him because in a lot of American media we are show stories where desperate gambles work cause he's absolutely unable to appreciate the bigger picture or make necessary sacrifices the way Nick Fury is despite his own peace with death. PS: forgot to include my thoughts regarding what happened with Shield and HYDRA, but that absolutely convinced him institutions are corruptible and will fail if even Peggy's did - but that doesn't mean they aren't better than the alternative. Like Monarchy works great when the leader is great and republics are based on institution, and despite Tony's own cryptofascist tendencies (personal murderous drone army) Cap's is very Noblesse Oblige and aristocratic for the little guy. Institutions can always go bad, but failing to build them and believe in them is just as big if not a greater failure than allowing them to have too much power and be corrupted.

@@Souledex Riiiiiight. "Greater evil". Tell us again how Trump is Satan and a paid agent of Russia and blah blah blah, so we need to fall in line with Barack "In the 1980s I would have been considered a moderate Republican" Obama and Hillary "Proud Goldwater Girl [who met Dr. King and STILL campaigned for a segregationist)" Clinton and Joe "Private Prison Industry" Biden. If you vote for evil, you only get evil. If you don't have standards, there's no point in having opinions. Cap is RIGHT to have standards. His failure in this film is that he compromises his standards because wah-wah-wah, I love Bucky. He's all for protecting life (leave no Sukovian behind!), but if it's HIS pal who has to go to prison, well, then let's start making exceptions. Well, too bad. Bucky knew what he was doing. (He says he remembers every mission.). He went along with it because he gave into the pain, and who cares who dies? You either have morality, or you don't. Cap throws away his moral high ground (we need freedom! I can't be a government tool!) because he wants to give his snuggle-buddy a break. Feh. (Tony is driven by grief and he's overreacting, obviously. The death penalty is ALWAYS wrong [Joe Biden put FORTY new death penalties in that fascist "crime bill" of 1994]. But he's loyal to his mom. He's doing EXACTLY what Cap is doing, but at least he's honest about it. I have no problem with Cap having principles. I have a problem with his selling them out because Sebastian Stan has cute eyes.)

So, Tony goes to war with his friends for a policy he deliberately violates himself (recruiting a CHILD SOLDIER and smuggling him illegally into and out of Germany and allowing him to work without meaningful oversight for years afterward, and you think he’s in the right?) He created a murder bot his friends had to stop and then blames THEM for the resulting chaos. Gets Wanda’s parents and brother killed and then neglects her mental health after she makes a tactical mistake that gets people killed, calling her a WMD and in no way having her back? Let me guess. In the first Iron Man, Yinsen tells Tony that he's a man with everything and nothing because he has no family. Tony makes a home for the Avengers and makes a family. Steve, for the second time, tears Tony's family apart (the first time not his fault). Tony got over his childhood resentment of Steve and gave him respect. Steve knew what happened to Tony's parents but chose Bucky's best interest over Tony's, even though he also knew how it felt to lose both parents. The depth of pain for Tony, seeing his parents murdered, being betrayed by Steve, and losing his new family would be crushing. Civil War is a heartbreaking film. I didn't want to see it when I saw the first previews.

Of all the Marvel movies, this one is definitely in my top 3. I loved how organic the conflict between characters and their personalities feels, I loved the pacing and the structure, I loved how not one of the characters actions betray their personality, I loved consequences that resulted from actions portrayed here. Watching it felt like an experience, without asking myself questions about plot contrivances (other than "why is no one here seeing a therapist?!?"). I envy you two (or three, Yuna was watching a part of the movie for sure) the freshness of experiencing these movies for the first (or sometimes second) time. Even though I stepped away from reactions in general, I still love seeing that authenticity you two represent. Also, with the benefit of hindsight, I still believe Tony has a lot of great ideas and morals, but continuosly fails to translate them into practice, which results in even more problems, trials and tribulations.

One thing to keep in mind is that Tony doesn't trust individuals to be perfect that's why he would rather have checks in a system to keep them relatively honest. Cap's big gripe with nick fury in winter soldier was that nick was keeping too many secrets, but here we have Cap proving that even he isnt perfect because he's also keeping secrets from Tony. They both have equally solid points here, but in no way can you let people govern themselves when they have so much power.

I mean, Tony is undeniably wrong. The scene where he manipulates Peter - Mr "with great power comes great responsibility" - into helping him proves it 1 - Peter wouldn't be on Tony's side if he knew the whole truth. Peter, and Cap, believe that with great power comes great responsibility. Tony, on the other hand, is arguing that SOMEBODY ELSE should have the responsibility. 2 - Tony's argument is, what? That he's worried that The Avengers might be irresponsible? HE TRICKED A 16 YEAR OLD KID INTO FIGHTING CAPTAIN AMERICA! The Avengers aren't irresponsible, Tony is 3 - The only reason New York isn't nuked is because The Avengers stopped it; the gov't wanted to nuke the city and call it a win. 4 - the gov't wanted to string up Bucky even though he didn't bomb the UN building, but the gov't didn't care: they simply wanted a scapegoat. Cap did what was right: he kept Bucky from harm until they could prove his innocence. The gov't - those who would've held power over The Avengers if they agreed to the Accords - didn't care about that at all.

@@SchulzEricT The government didn't want to scapegoat Bucky, he was framed. If the investigation had happened, he'd have been found innocent. Ultron was Tony's fault because Wanda fucked with his head. Is there any check for that sort of thing? Cap's defense of Wanda (when Tony puts her in Vision's care) is "she's just a kid", and then he goes and beats up an actual 16 year old kid. Anyways, I don't even see why this movie is gets so much praise (actually I know why it does). The Avengers breaking up doesn't do anything because they team up literally in the next Avengers film. Accords are almost forgotten. The only other slightly big thing is T'Chaka's death, which does get addressed. But, I won't go on a rant about this, Honest Trailer and How it Should've Ended summarise it pretty well for this film.

@@paradox_4094 In a situation like this, I'm not sure there is a solution. Collateral damage is a result of The Avengers minimizing the damage that an external threat presents; take away the Avengers and that damage is still there, just worse. Perhaps form a team of people whose job is to supplement The Avengers, working to protect civilians while The Avengers deal with the threat directly? I mean, the only difference between The Avengers and our system of cops is that The Avengers, without oversight, deal with threats while cops, without oversight, steal kidnap and murder innocent civilians. All the MCU did was put a better, more powerful, more altruistic body in charge of dealing with these threats... but unlike with real cops, we can't spend money better by dealing with underlying issues in order to alleviate crime: in the MCU, supervillains aren't going to be eradicated by solving homelessness or poverty or hunger.

Team tony would be the public averngers team that does things by the accords and team Cap would be the black ops team that doesn’t. That’s what happens anyway but it would’ve been more realistic for them to decide on that together……but it woulda made for a less impactful movie lol.

I agree Natasha literally said that, the only clear headed person who made a decision besides vision. Tony was guilty, Cap had a bad experience with shield, Rhodes was already a subject to the government, Wanda didn’t really have a say she just didn’t want to be caged and was helping cap prevent a disaster, and Sam was following his idol and didn’t want to be controlled. Natasha spit all the facts in this movie. Having on foot on the wheel to help steer and staying together is more important then how they stay together. It’s really a huge reason why they lost to thanos because they were split up and on different pages.

I respectfully disagree with you guys saying it doesn't make sense for Tony to want revenge on Bucky because his parents deaths occurred so long ago. I mean, they are still his parents. All Tony knows is that they left home one day and never came back. He thought all these years that they died in a car crash, tragic, but an accident overall. And Tony was left with guilt and regret because he never got to say a proper goodbye, or work out his issues with his father, etc. But to find out in an instant that they were *killed*? Taken from him? They didn't NEED to die? All the time he could have had with them? I don't know, but from my POV, I personally feel I would have felt a rush of rage for the person responsible especially if they were standing right in front of me.

Totally get where you’re coming from! Our reasoning for his actions not making sense aren’t because they happened so long ago, but rather that they seem inconsistent with Tony’s character given his knowledge that Bucky was nothing more than a pawn for Hydra at that point. He was brainwashed and had no agency of his own. Time passed had nothing to do with it for us. If Bucky did it of his own will, we’d feel very differently. We just felt Tony’s rage overcame reason to a confusing degree.

@@shmayleb Oh hello! As far as my comment goes, I believe in the video Meg does mention that it didn't make sense to her because it had been years since Tony's parents had passed away and it would have made more sense if Bucky was a more immediate threat to Pepper's life, or even Steve's life. That's primarily the part my first comment was in reference to! But I understand where you're coming from. Yes, logically, Tony knows what Bucky had been through. However, emotions have a tendency to override EVERYTHING if the shock and trauma are enough. Logic and emotions are not always compatible. 😅 That's the main point I was trying to make. It being Tony's parents and him directly witnessing their murders on video, it was *extremely* personal to him in that moment. I mean I can relate it to T'Challa as well, he had been chasing revenge for almost the whole movie. He needed time and the truth before he was able to let it go and see how it poisoned the others, and decided that death was too easy for Zemo. If he had gotten a hold of Zemo right after his father had died, he would have killed him 100%, I mean he certainly was trying to kill Bucky. But T'Challa had the benefit of time so that he could see more clearly later. Tony had *just* found out his parents were murdered and immediately attacked. Anger and hurt are potent fuels for revenge, because after all Tony is still only human, is all I'm saying. 🙂

Steve knew Howard and Maria Stark were murdered as far back as "Winter Soldier" because Zola said "accidents will happen" just as the article about their deaths appeared on the computer screen. In Captain America : the Winter Soldier, when Dr Arnim Zola (the guy in the computer) explains to Steve and Natasha that Hydra infiltred since since the beginning at the same time you see images, newsapers headlines and so on that show some of what Hydra did during all those years. Same, I wish I could be on Steve's side completely because of course you can't give up full control to the government, but then seeing how much damage they caused not only to the structures but also innocent people when fleeing instead of first trusting someone with the resources to back you up, who has supported you and who has been your teammate/friend for a while, ("we'll lose" "we'll do that together too") I just couldn't put my trust in Steve's actions. So then that leaves us with the lesser evil, or at least the evil that we know. I'm Team Cap. The Accords don't really do anything except pass blame to the Avengers while they saved the day. It's no surprise that people get hurt and buildings get destroyed when there's an alien invasion. The robots attacking last time was completely Tony's fault so I didn't agree that everyone needed to be put in check as he said. In real life he would either be sued or arrested for his part in Ultron. Also, heroes like Thor couldn't be placed under government control along with other otherworldly heroes that came along since they're not from Earth. Also, if there are other superhero teams (X-Men, Fantastic Four, Inhumans) then that would have to extend to them too.

It goes kind of unnoticed for most people, but when Tony attacks Bucky, he aims a missile at him at close range. Given the size of the missile's explosion, it would probably have damaged the suit and injured Tony, had he successfully fired it at Bucky. That's the kind of blind rage we're talking about here. He was fully willing to put his own health on the line to make sure his mother's murderer was dead. Also that kick to the head always comes off as incredibly personal somehow. Even moreso than the attempted murders prior in the fight. Also it should be said that while I am overall glad nobody died in the third act, I still am on Tony's side on that matter and think Steve was a pretty horrible friend for not telling Tony about Howard and Maria's murder. Bucky didn't necessarily deserve as much of a beating as he got, given he was brainwashed to be the Winter Soldier, but quite honestly Steve deserved every blow he took.

I think the pair's egos and the events leading up to this film are what makes me side with Tony. He has repeatably been humbled and proven wrong throughout his journey to this point. Ultron (and to some extent Aldrich Killian) has made him realise he can't be the lone wolf of the group, which is why he fights so hard to keep all the avengers together. Steve on the other hand has only been proven right up to this point. He was right about SHIELD's tesseract plans, the helicarriers, Bucky's conditioning. He has reached a point where he trusts only himself. Breaking up the avengers and physically hurting the people he was friends with didn't faze him, he's the captain after all and they're deserting.

They are super humans and the answer was right in front of them the whole time, as shown from Wakanda who just hide their power level regardless of whatever the world says. Just sign the accords, but when you disagree, just disagree and do what you want anyways. What are they going to do? Be powerful enough to keep Hulk, Thor, or Wanda from breaking out whoever they need to? No shot. Plus Cap kisses and falls for the neice of the love of his life when her bodies barely in the ground, whose speech ended up persuading him. To him, shes some random woman he just got to know, who had been lying about who she was for years, that we don't know what kind of person she is. EVERYONE in this movie is flawed, and thats why the conflict takes place and makes sense.

When the movie came out they released a “real” website with everything on The Accords. It had a lot of troublesome things on it. Anybody with powers, no matter their age, must be registered by the gov & cannot use their abilities unless it is for the gov ; if not they & their fam will be sent to camps & held indefinitely. Anybody doing any type of super heroing without being registered & no matter the reason, gets locked up. If you sign, your tech is now the gov. tech. If you are a superhero you must forfeit your identity to the public. It wasn’t just about the Avengers, yes the nation gov.s wanted them in their pocket but also if all the Avengers has signed it, it would’ve given the gov the green light to heavily enforce the Sokovia Accords on anyone & on worldwide scale since this isn’t just the U.S but every member of the U.N under it. Steve was right in that it was made by people with their agendas in mind - government interest

Tony was guilty, Rhodes was already a subject to the government, cap had a bad experience with shield, Wanda didn’t even have a say, and Sam was pretty much following his idol. But I don’t think cap made the wrong/bad move. Like Natasha said having one foot on the wheel to help steer and one outside the system undercover. Staying together is more important then how they stay together, she spit knowledge because a huge reason why thanos won is because they were all split up and on different pages. After watching it again I thought it was a great movie and realized why a lot of people liked it. It's a game changer of a movie. If you think about it ... this is a different twist in Tony and Steve. In this movie they both change. In fact, you see it foreshadowed in the beginning of the movie, where Tony is actually reading FROM A SCRIPT and sticking to it as he talks to the college kids. It then is further amplified with the Sakovia Accords, as Tony starts talking about living within boundaries. On the other side, Steve Rogers appears to go "rouge", as he does not accept the Accord. He actually does not follow orders. Cap becomes a "criminal". As I think of the movie in that vein, it feels mind blowing how the MCU did that. Character growth in both Ironman and Captain America...it is WOW.

That same immaturity led to the creation of Ultron and the destruction of Sokovia, so we’re also heaping on guilt and the loss of Pepper because of that guilt. But you two can’t buy that the singular person who killed his parents and broke up his new family, Bucky, drove him over the edge?! Also Tony is very deliberately switching stances in this movie because of guilty. Before he was all about autonomy and then he built Ultron! That guilt makes him want to shift the responsibility. Steve ironically is the opposite.

But people tend to look past Steve’s immaturity as well. His ego of what I do is right led to some bad decision making on his part. It’s understandable that you would be suspect towards government control. But just saying fuck it, imma do what I want to do is crazy. That’s zemos entire point about super soldiers. They always tend to head down this inherit path of self destruction and selfish ego driven conquest. Being able to do as u please with superpowers just always leads to chaos and catastrophic consequences. And caps problem here is that he never has to deal with any consequences. He’s a solider. He does what he does, sometimes innocent people get hurt in the process, and he just moves on to the next mission. Well Tony is not afforded that luxury. He has to mingle with government agents. He’s around the everyday people often. He runs a internationally known business. And not too of that, he funds ALL of the avengers operations. So he ends up having to take the large blunt of the drama behind closed doors, and that’s not fair to him. He causes enough trouble on his own. But now he’s responsible for anything anyone if the avengers do. And people are looking at him crazy for. Doing the right thing and trying to find a compromise instead of going rouge. Morally cap may be right. But his actions don’t speak for that in this movie.

@@TheIcemanthomas Steve isn’t immature just because he acts against the accords. I agree that both sides could’ve handled the situation better. But Steve was still acting to save someone. He also admitted that what he kept from tony was wrong and that tony isn’t wrong and people should do what they believe in. And it’s not about fuck it imma do what I want because Steve wasn’t inherently wrong, he was trying to save someone who had been brainwashed and wrongly accuse of murdering a UN leader. Orders were to kill someone who was brainwashed and innocent in the murder of the king and done with that life. So that’s why I think what steve did was right but, not signing the accords isn’t a bad or good thing for the team and the world. But I think it puts them in a better position having people in the government and outside undercover. Natasha said it best one foot on the wheel and the other doing it’s own thing. A team for the public and whole team needed to prevent catastrophic events. Like mace and coulson in agents of shield.

@@TheIcemanthomas Caps actions in this movie were a direct response to the government mishandling Bucky(except for the beginning scene) There’s a whole scene where he talks with Falcon about what they’re going to do now that they ‘quit’ the avengers. And then the whole thing with Bucky happened and Cap found out they intended on killing Bucky without his human right to due process. Even after getting arrested he tried to go about it the right way by asking for a lawyer for Bucky but he was promptly denied

Exactly, & it would’ve been way worse for Sam. Vision’s beam kept going after it passed through the War Machine chest plate. This means if it had gone through the boosters on the Falcon suit from the angle it was coming from, the beam would’ve either gone through the pack & then through Sam’s chest or his head 💀

At first the studio wanted Bucky, Cap and Tony to resolve their issues and fight off the Winter Soilders, but it was Kevin Feige that wanted their to be repercussions and those don't get resolved for years. I respect Feige's decision, mostly because it doesn't give us what BvS gave us.

Tbf to BvS the conflict was entirely made up and heavily manipulated by Lex and Bruce's paranoia. Once that was solved there was no reason to fight especially with a bigger threat on the way. Love both movies tho, especially the way the world and media saw Superman in BvS.

4:40 I don't understand commitment to Trumpism either. One interesting trick done here is that the other Winter Soldiers you see are the actors' stunt doubles, giving them a minor role of their own. As for Tony, strong emotions can eclipse logic even in smart characters. He was there, watching that assassination happen at Bucky's cold metal hand as though it were yesterday. He was also no doubt angered by Steve keeping it a secret from him and already emotionally off-kilter after what happened to Rhodey.

Do you not get Tony’s side though? His side is knowing that superheroes have always caused huge amounts of collateral damage, and killed thousands of people anyway. They even showed the footage of some and you can draw connections to other events. Tony used to be a weapons manufacturer for the military before he saw the damage. Once Hulk comes out, he’ll go on a rampage and can & will kill both good guys and bad guys. The military gave Emil Blonsky the super soldier serum to stop Hulk and he forced Mr Blue to give him Hulk’s blood to become Abomination. They leveled Harlem in a fight. Other companies failed to recreate the Iron Man suit and it killed some military soldiers. Tony & Rhodey blew up his house because he got drunk at his birthday party after he knew his arc reactor was killing him. Loki tested Thor on his coronation day, and Thor immediately wanted war against the Frost Giants. He got mad at Odin and was cast out. Odin lied to Loki about being a Frost Giant and Loki sent the Destroyer to level New Mexico, trying to kill Thor. Captain America (even though he was in a war), still directly killed people. In Iron Man 3, Tony said “We create our own demons” as he left Aldrich Killian and AIM on the roof. Loki got his own mom killed by telling a Dark Elf “You might want to take the stairs to the left. HYDRA had Bucky, and took down SHIELD. The 3 helicarriers caused a lot of casualties after Cap, Nat & Sam reprogrammed them to shoot each other. Wanda worked for HYDRA and Ultron (both tried to kill millions of people). Tony created Ultron, the AI that tried mass global genocide. Wanda put Hulk in an uncontrollable rampage in Sokovia that forced Tony to get his Hulkbuster, and caused significant amounts of death (by debris or destruction). There was so much debris after Ultron lifted the city and Thor destroyed it that people couldn’t see/breathe/died, and they just left.

Hey so I have a suggestion I think y’all should try. After this movie Doctor Strange is next but chronologically Black Widow (2021) happens right after Civil War. I think you should watch it as the next movie because it really helps understand Black widows character a lot more and her whole backstory, but DO NOT watch the end credit scene of that movie until after you’ve watched the last Avengers movie because there is a major spoiler in it. I’m loving your guys’ reactions too, hope y’all feel better very soon❤️

Yo honestly I never thought about it like that but it totally works. Especially cuz there’s certain references or like foreshadowing in the black widow movie of events that we already knew the outcome of because we had already seen those events in past movies. That kinda threw me off in theaters when I watched it. I think Marvel made a mistake pushing her movie back so much

@@antoineporche-rideaux4841 Nah if they do watch Black widow after Civil war they should go right back to watching in release order to avoid a lot confusion with the end credit scenes of the next movies. It works with the black widow movie as long as they don’t watch the end credit scene of it until after Avengers 4. If they were to do chronological order it would require them to go back or forth and watch the end credit scenes of other movies and that’s way too much work and would most likely spoil a lot
