Vice Admiral Sir Alan Grose KBE former captain of the type 82 destroyer HMS Bristol looks uncomfortable as he misleads the British press after the Falklands War in 1982. He fabricates a story stating his ship fired missiles at two Argentine reconnaissance aircraft, when in reality it was HMS Cardiff that fired two Sea Dart missiles at a single Argentine Air Force Boeing 707 (TC-92) airliner in the reconnaissance role. Cardiff missed with both missiles due to a combination of having to fire at extreme range and some spectacular evasive maneuvering initiated by the FAA pilot Otto Ritondale. Prior to the shoot down attempt, Bristol's command team issued a 'Hold Fire' weapon restriction order which severely delayed a timely missile launch by Cardiff, this indecision and delay enabled the enemy to complete their mission and return to Argentina. Bristol detected what they assessed as two fast moving aircraft approaching from the opposite direction and subsequently wasted two expensive missiles on what turned out to be spurious (false) radar returns.

Regarding Bristol's reluctance to shoot: isn't it true the first attempt to shoot down the Burglar resulted in a Civilian 707 being targeted. Minutes from launch of the SAMs its heading was checked and it was on a direct course from Rio to Durban, so Flag says weapons tight and a SHAR goes to check visually - it said Brazil Airways on the side, cabin full of international passengers from every country including the USA. Had the Task Force shot that aircraft down the war would have ended right there. A timely warning of the limitations of sending a missile to do an eyeballs job.

Some valid observations there David, however, by the time this incident happened we were well into a shooting war, for example HMS Sheffield & HMS Ardent had both been sunk. This aircraft approached our group when we were around one thousand nautical miles from the Falklands, it turned sixty degrees left when we became visible and arched around our force. This is not a normal manoeuvre for a civilian aircraft, I mean it literally flew a perfect semi circle around our ships. Couple that with our intelligence (HMS Coventry attempted to shoot it down earlier that day but her missile launcher failed) and the electronic finger print (707 weather radar they were using) our operators had stored in their UAA1 data base and identified it as present in this target. It all adds up to a bad guy who is a dead duck had we been allowed to fire.
