Its surprising, especially considering that young Yama was much more ruthless, hotheaded and cruel than modern Yama. There were so many dead that he couldn't walk on the ground, his companions were a war crime brigade. So why he left Yhwach alive makes no sense, hope its explained someday.

@kaiserafini he didn't leave yhwach alive, he killed him. When yhwach had his almighty sealed by ichibei he told him you won't regain these powers again until your death. Yammamoto later killed yhwach and then over 1000 years he regenerated and thats also why he gets the almighty back as well. No one knew that he would come back to life though.

If you still say this after watching how Ichibe took Ywachs Almighty, either you were blind or ignorant Yamaji fan. Either way maybe he didn’t kill him because either he feared that Ywach will get his Almighty in his death time or Ywach deserved a 2nd chance.

He warned Yama about the quincies and the possibility of something happening in the future and Yama dismissed him as being ridiculous, and shut down any further discussion about it. Maybe because ishida was so young, and Mayuri knew that meant quincies were around in probably more numbers and breeding. That’s my headcanon anyway. Extremely unfair from Mayuri, Yamamoto defeated and kill Ywach, he laso did it in a war that apparently costed the Soul Society a lot (that's why his said that he made thinks worse). He gave his all to defeat the quincies no one should expect Yamamoto to know that his opponent had hacks.

I think it's less blaming him for not killing yhwach and more mayuri blaming Yamamoto for not preparing for his eventual return ever since uryu came to soul society.

But he had every right to assume Yamamoto failed to finish off Ywach when the guy reappeared a thousand years later. And there's that too. Uryu being a quincy that could come to SS means that there might still be other Quincies out there, so Yamamoto not prepping for a large battle with quincies in the future was quite irresponsible. He was too confident in his own strength and other captains, he clearly neglected strengthening the defense of SS. The result: the SS was left without any strategy to properly defend against the invaders. The moment the Captain fell, everything just fell apart.
