I am interested in how captains handle personnel problems at sea. On land, you can send the current employee on a course. Or you can easily search for a replacement worker. But at sea? What do you do? Hire a dolphin? Problems I'm thinking of are: 1. personality issues. 2. training issues, guy turns out not to know what he said he knew on his resume. 3. unexpected lengthy illness 4. injuries that prevent a crew member working 5. employee's family crisis (death or fatal illness in family) 6. personality issues. He's the captain. He's out there with what, 3-7 officers, 3-7 engineers, 1-2 cooks, 10-20 additional crew? Some of them are specialists and the only one with their particular expertise on board. He's alone except for the radio and internet. No sit down with an HR specialist and strategize. No have a committee meeting next week to decide. What's he do?

Karan Singh has very intelligently interviewed the Captain with perfect and relevant questions ! Good English spoken by the Polish Captain. I remember my lovely port stays in Gdynia, Gdansk and Sceczin as a Second Officer a very long time ago !

You did a good job of asking the correct open-ended questions, Karanivir. The second part of interviewing is to be patient and wait while the interviewee answers. Let them answer, and then give them another 3-5 seconds, in case they want to add anything. Also use that 3-5 seconds to think of any follow-up questions you have. Be patient, let the interviewee answer in their own words. Let them finish. And if something wasn't clear, ask a follow up question. If they get stuck on a word, wait 3-5 seconds, the word they are stuck on may not be the word you suggest. You suggesting something might change their answer, might take you away from an interesting direction. Then when it is all done, at least an hour later, or a day later, you edit out all or almost all of the pauses. But doing the interview, _you need to leave the pauses because filling in those pauses is where interviewees sometimes say something unexpected and surprisingly interesting._

Nice bro I am also a sailor in indian navy and I got to see a lot today because our ship and yours are completely different and both also have to live in water. Both also had to do a lot of difficult tasks, I also came to Boston.

2 things. Great job interviewing the "old man". I just found your channel. I've been following Chief Makoi, a phillipine chief engineer on a bulk career. Marcin you would have made an excellent American firefighter. Leaders are born but to be a good leader you have to be a good follower. The Maritimes are based on meritocracy and hard work. Working your way up often starting at maritime academies. Did you know the Emma burned on her build. The beautiful bridge burned. It's on KZfaq. The multinational crew is amazing. It's shows how you can get along if you have a common goal. In this case moving cans and operating a ship. Happy holidays to the crew of the Emma Maersk.
