127 Hours made just $18 million in the US, $60 million worldwide. It was nominated for several awards, but didn't win any Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG or BAFTAs. It didn't click with audiences, and while it's respected by critics and the industry they ultimately feel it wasn't worth rewarding either. You CAN separate cinema and real life, as well as personal opinion and the overall consensus. - Grace

I really want to see this one. Thank you Grace for your words of thought I agree with you about the movies being a form of art and sometimes it doesn't play out the same way as the real life situation. The main reason why I want to see this movie is because I was with this fleet when this event happened. We had to then escort merchant ships after the pirate king declared no mercy for US ships going through their waters.

Grace, If you look up the story, you don't have just the ship being captured. The hijacking and the events around it are at least an hour long (probably more), and you also have Captain Phillips being escorted with the pirates when they left the ship, and the rescue. That's another 45-60 minutes right there.

Also 127 hours was nominated for 6 oscars, 9 Baftas (including one 1 win), 3 Golden Globes and 1 screen actors guild awards. Those are all major awards. It was appreciated just fine. Also the budget for 127 hours wasn't that high so it was still a success. Lastly, just because a film doesn't make a lot of money doesn't mean it's not a good movie or that it didn't "work".

I liked 127 hours but I can definitely see why a lot of people didn't since most of the movie's 94 minute length belonged to one particular setting. I felt invested in that moment though. However, although I am intrested in seeing Paul Greengrass's interpretation of Captain Philips and his crew's interaction with the pirates, a real life story, the trailer doesn't completely pull me in. This is in contrast to the trailers of previous oscar contenders, "Lincoln," "Argo," and "Zero Dark Thirty."

I recall in a featurette or an interview with Bill Nunn about portraying Robbie Robertson in the first 3 Spiderman movies. In that interview he indicated he was hesitant to take on the role because given he was not familiar with the character he thought they may have had flipped the race just for pandering and "token" reasons. But later he found out Robbie was apart of the Spiderman mythos as a strong respected newsman. And of course the Bugle in the comics would not be the Bugle without Robbie.

I've watched the film, I personally thought it was very good! In fact, better than I expected. In this review you mentioned the actors playing the samalian pirates; they are in fact samalian citizens - with no acting experience of such going into the role, so in my opinion I thought they did exceptionally well indeed! I may be wrong so do correct me if you are certain I am.

Sometimes it doesn't work. but like you said, They know what they're doing. To me, it seems like an intense movie, yet it does look like a rental compared to the other movies coming out this year.

Not entirely. For example in the Dark Knight Returns some people were speculating Nolan would kill Batman/Wayne and he kinda sorta but not quite did. In Return of the Jedi nobody was really anticipating Darth Vader to come back from the dark side at the end,

Grace, have you seen United 93? It's about 9/11, and it's also directed by Paul Greengrass. I'm guessing that these 2 movies will be more similar than this and 127 Hours. They both follow the same kind of storytelling: Just laying out the facts, showing us what happened. United 93 was in my mind the best movie of 2006, and one of the best movies of the decade. It was also quite successful. Also on a side note, 127 Hours is a great movie.

I have to agree with your disagreement. This looks like it could have a lot of potential drama. The only issue with true stories like this you kind of already know how it turns out so they really have to make the journey work over the destination.

Grace, does this remind you of some of those tight space action thrillers of the 90's? With Shane Black's success with Iron Man 3 (As you so dutifully noted) maybe some of those same 90's motifs will be returning. However, will we stop looking backward and borrowing from other times? I think "Gravity" is much more forward thinking film wise and concept wise than this. Can films like this and Gravity win Oscars? What do you think Grace?

I mean, she already said it's not her Superman film so even before watching the film, I feel it's already dead to her 'till the end :( ...

If indeed the pirate crew is not American actors I think there will be a stand out because it will bring a sense authenticity. For example Apocalypto would have been a different and probably bad movie if they has used an American cast, still I know it is an extreme example.

True Story movies that are long are more likely to be GREAT Experiences. I mean well go see Ironman 3, Star Trek, Pacific Rim, Elysium, Fast 6, & Man Of Steel for Popcorn Action Flicks and movies like this true story long movies like 127 Hours (Ilove it, I though Franco did good and the Score was stunning) The Pianist,American Gangster, A Beautiful Mind, American History X, Apocalypto,Argo,Black Hawk Down, Frida,Gandhi,Kingdom of Heaven & this movie to experience other things of Cinematic
