As a former Army Infantry Officer, I really enjoy this episode. It's very similar to when a new commander comes to your unit or something. I think it's also important to remember that the Enterprise's sole purpose is exploration. So these military tactics and thinking would seem really foreign to these characters. A commander entering into this environment would have trouble relating to his crew. I love that Diana says he's actually unsure because so many commanders and leaders are truly unsure of their actions but they must act with confidence to inspire others. Great video guys!

Starfleet is a military organization and the crew of the Enterprise are trained for battle. Their 'sole' purpose is not exploration, that is simply their main purpose. Military tactics would absolutely not be foreign to them.

@dapeel61 I think True probably overstated with "sole" and "totally foreign". But primary and "not the focus" would be accurate, and that would still explain the problem adjusting.

It's funny to note that David Warner (Gul Madred) was hired three days before filming so he had no time to memorize his lines. So there are hidden cue cards on Gul Madred's PADD as well as other places. Which honestly adds to the scenes since Gul Madred seems like the type of character who talks without making eye contact unless he really wants to look someone in the eyes.

My understanding is that Gene Roddenberry was pushing for TNG to be more like The Love Boat in space, and insofar as it was military, he wanted it to be more like MASH. That's why there are some many early episodes where they were trucking around medical supplies. As soon a Gene died the franchise became more and more military focused.

@@bogella2225 yeah when I was a teen I disliked Jellico because I liked Riker and the crew and it seemed like he was just being a dick. Then I joined the Marines and had changes of command or an OIC from a 'Picard' to a 'Jellico', and while it was not a nice change, you simply had to deal with it because you had no choice ... then 9-11 happened and you quickly learn to appreciate the 'Jellicos' in your life.

what's crazy is that there are no pockets in StarTrek. they have clips on their phasers and triquarters. they have tool cases that have hyper spanner or something sometimes... but that's about it. they do have those hexagon hard shell duffels .. and hard shell backpacks sometimes too. .. but no pockets. i can remember one character with pockets.. but he was thieving so of course he needed pockets.

Uniforms are mandatory for many practical reasons in a military. Things like Friend or Foe Identification (IFF), team building, and maintaining an air of general professionalism is critical to any serious armed force. There is a war going on right now where one side specifically doesn't adhere to the generally agreed rules of war by not wearing uniforms. If you aren't wearing a uniform, you have less protections as far as things like POW status is concerned, amongst other things like making it nearly impossible to discern combatant from civilian. Not wearing a uniform is all around a stupid and dangerous thing to do in a military, especially during times of conflict.

@@NewbieStarTrek Semantics aside, its two armed forces killing each other. That said, I probably could have used a different example, like Russia's 'little green men' who were 'on vacation' in Crimea back in '14. They believed that the lack of a uniform provided them political cover for what was then the start of the war that's continued to today. In any case you guys have become my go to podcast for editing, cheers!

In ds9 the only time racism comes up in regards to sisko being black on earth is when sisko gets sent back in time, the pah wraiths traps his mind in the past, xeniphobia against actual/possible changelings, and irl where star trek fans didnt like the sbow bc sisko is black. There is no rascism 300 years in the future in the world of star trek. Its def an issue that can be tackled however the powers that be want to keep it around in our time. In star trek those powers are killed off in the 300 years between now and then

Timestamp 33:56 - While I have no military experience whatsoever, I can't help but think that a brand-new commanding officer coming in and uprooting an entire ship's established routine just before going into battle is an absolutely terrible idea. One of the host says, "Who wouldn't want to work a 6-hr shift vs an 8-hr shift," but that sounds like it's making the assumption that there's leftover personnel on the ship to complete a full day's work and further implies that there's personnel that may not be working at all on many days throughout the week. Sounds doubtful. Given how soon a potential conflict will occur, I feel like it’s a bigger risk to ask an entire crew to adjust to one captain’s preferred schedule vs the captain figuring out how he can make himself work with the ship. Timestamp 38:35 - I think Jellico sounds like an asshole a lot of the time in part because of the foreboding music.

Steve's videos are much shorter. Also, he's actually usually not using clips, most of the time he's using screenshots. Steve also seems to generally be very positive and kind about Star Trek discussions, we often are very critical of the show. Our pointed criticisms of the shows has often gotten us targeted in the past. CBS has manually flagged a bunch of our shorts in the past, so we are on their radar. Also, given our podcast workflow, it would be extremely time-consuming to not only source all of the shots for a 1.5 hour podcast and edit them in, it would likely be mostly for naught as the vast majority of our audience simply listens to the podcast in the background, that's how most people consume podcasts in general. As to the last point about animation, it's a few things. We're generally uncomfortable being on camera, but more than that the podcast is actually extremely heavily edited, with maybe around a thousand cuts per episode, cutting out the dead air and uhms/interruptions that are inherent to remote recording. We are generally very proud of setting a higher quality standard when it comes up that type of stuff, and that requires lot of editing that would look very jerky if we were just constantly cutting live action footage.
