This is the Captain Scarlet Trailer from the year 2000. It was made to check out the possibility to recreate the old series in CGI.

Amusingly, Captain Black was originally an American. Conrad Lefkon was the son of a crime lord in New York, I think. He joined Spectrum to escape the life of crime his family led.

Ed Bishop and Francis Mathews back as Blue and Scarlet! How wonderful that this exists. If only they'd done 13 episodes or so....hell, six woulda been nice. Hell, one PILOT.

Fantastic! This is what the CGI series should have been. Hearing the old Captain Scarlet's voice and seeing the old Spectrum logo was just magic! I cannot thank you enough! :D

@BigSteve300 : for this CGI trailer they got the original voice actors of Scarlet and Blue to do the voice overs, shame they didn't do it for the proper CGI series

Eventually they changed the name from Captain Scarlet And The Return Of The Mysterons to Gerry Anderson's New Captain Scarlet, and the rest is history...

There seem to be some negative opinions regarding the 05 CGI release. Personally, I loved it. Bought the series and had a Captain Scarlet watchathon. I admit though, the only two down sides for me were, one, the two leading voices, Scarlet's and Blue's, they were somewhat bland and two, that this series was left without resolution just like the first. I suppose we'll never know how the story arc was meant to evolve, if there ever actually was a story arc. I loved Mathew's Scarlet even though he accented towards Cary Grant and Ed Bishop's performance as Blue and Straker. For me, if I may add, totally hated Terrahawks. Had potential but not very well done.

You say "even though he accented towards Cary Grant" as if that's a flaw, which couldn't be further from the truth, as Cary Grant is always a win. Not to mention, Francis Matthews was hired for the role because of his Grant impression. As for the Terrahawks comment, that was totally uncalled for and came out of nowhere.

Gerry himself admitted he wasn’t “too keen” on Terrahawks; despite its large following. Captain Scarlet ‘05 was great, it was just hampered by being badly promoted. Also the lack of the theme song was a minor irritant, as even the 2004 Thunderbirds has the theme song.

New Captain Scarlet did have a resolution (be it an intentional cliffhanger). The final episode ‘Dominion’ featured Captain Black being free of the Mysterons similar to how Captain Scarlet regained his humanity. The issue was that ITV screwed up the episode order and did not broadcast the finale as the last episode - a final act of disrespect they showed towards to entire series. I agree the original series should have ended with some kind of conclusion. The ITC complication movie ‘Captain Scarlet vs. The Mysterons’ showed an alternate ending to ‘Attack on Cloudbase’ which provides a conclusion. Interestingly, the CGI revival in this video seems canonical to that conclusion. Slightly off topic, but I was disappointed that the original never featured a return to Mars. There were many episodes featuring the various ingredients for Spectrum’s return to Mars and ultimately led to a mission the audience were deprived of seeing.

The 1st time i saw the original puppets series i was 5years old and i got it in dvd box set like the other Gerry Anderson's series. This trailler are AWESOME. I think it's the voice of FRANCIS MATHIEW cpt SCARLET and the late ED BISHOP for CPT BLUE who did the original voices of this legendary persona.

I love the original series of Captain Scarlet, its my second favourite Anderson production, and I believe that he and his team should have made a series this way and pickup where the original series left off, instead of retelling the story like they did in 2005 which was appalling.

I thought it was a great re telling, I also loved that we had captain scarlet and black actually interacting with each other instead of never encountering each other, they went from being the best of friends to the best of enemies

The original actors were used for this but not the full series which followed in 2005. By that point the CGI and designs had evolved considerably and the series was IMO quite brilliant

The actual series used new actors because it was a reboot, while this short is supose to be a sequel to the original show and thats why it has the original voice actors

The original voice actor for the Captain Scarlet character was actually a Cary Grant voice impersonator.

I would describe Francis Matthews as a very talented actor (I remember him in Paul Temple).....who could also impersonate Cary Grant. :-)

UFO was very much a live action version of this format. Cat with 10 Lives redefined UFO's alien menace as possibly having no physical form and just using our bodies, which is similar to the Mysteron idea. They also began controlling people too.

it even carrys on form the original series, the SPV, Angels, Cloudbase & SSC are more or less unchanged, the logo unchanged and uniforms more less the same. I would have liked the new captain scarlet if it was like this only with better animation.

Wouldn't Scarlet and Blue be just a bit suspicious if Captain Black coincidentally returns hours after the Mysterons threat to Spectrum? Even if he gained security clearance.

They're making a new Thunderbirds series in CGI as well, I think. Gerry Anderson anounced this last year in January.

I think this was conceptually far better than the CGI version that finally appeared, although technically as good. It was great to hear Francis Matthews and Ed Bishop in their old roles, but sadly Donald Gray who did Colnel White/ Captain Black and the Mysteron voice had since passed away. His replacement in the new version played by Mike Hayley was eerily similar.

It was the marionettes and scale model effects that gave old Gerry Anderson shows their own characters (it sure wasn't the writing). Rendered in another form of animations makes this work directly comparable to other animation shows, and its not winning. Ridiculously stiff as they were, I still want my damn puppets!

I wish the Thunderbirds was done like this instead of that odd CGI they used to try and make them look like puppets. Either use good CGI or Puppets. I remember having the large Captain Scarlet figure. It was almost like a doll which is different to the figurines I collected and still collect. It was not a bad animated series but it was on when I did not pay much attention.

in fact (as the title itself claims) this is a pretty modern computer graphics video, likely fanmade in the 2000 and just inspired to the omonym '60s series that was (obviously) made with real dolls and step one camera.

My parents raised me on a diet of Supermarionation when I was young. Stingray, Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Captain Scarlet the lot. I remember seeing this before the 2005 series started. When it actually started, they didn't let me watch it since they deemed it 'too violent' after the first episode. I would have preferred if they done this one. The voice acting was terrible in the new one. Conrad's voice actor was the only one that didn't make my blood boil.

Wow muh of this loosk like CG worthy of about 1990, never mind 2000. Much of the human motion is clearly motion captured, but the surfacing, modeling and lighting is sub par. The facial expressions are dismal - look at Scarlet's face when he's shooting at the car, for instance. If this was a student effort I'd give it a break, but to put this out as a professional program, even by the standards of ten years ago, is taking the piss.

Captain Blue and Captain Black's line, entertaining at 2:00 . Nice expressions in the animation, though the marionettes are the best way to go IMO, as with the hopeful Firestorm series in the works by Gerry Anderson's team.

just like to echo everyone one else's sentiments here, great post, thanks very much! Does anyone have the other CGI trailer? All I can remember of it is a rather digitised sounding mysteron voice that says "We will start with the destruction and retromotabolism of all spectrum agents" Wasnt quite as nice to look at as this version, and the last time I had the clip its really badly pixellated.

@CaptainScarlet300 Not exactly, the Mysterons are capable of mind control also, they need to kill the host to gain complete control of the body. This is why in the original series Captain Black acted mysteriously on Mars before returning to Earth. Whether or not they killed him was never explained.

Have to admit I like what they ultimately decided on better than this. Looks more than real people and less like animated puppets. The older voices don't help as they are the wrong age for the characters they're supposed to be portraying. Also New series is better for those less familiar with the original series

I much prefer what Anderson ended up with- New Captain Scarlet's his best series as far as I'm concerned. Trying to remake or continue the original series would have been a mistake. For a taster it was all right. Voice acting was awful, but for 2000, that was pretty good.

Because it stands for Spectrum is Green (everything is OK).....and SIR (Spectrum is Red) means there's trouble.

@TorchwoodUK I think that's why I LIKE New Captain Scarlet. It went its own way, made it edgier, with the Scarlet-Black-Destiny triangle and the gender-swapped characters. Now we have to wait and see what Anderson does with Thunderbirds.
