Thanks so much for enlightening me as to the complexities of Capture One. I was in a rush to start but it has to be taken slowly to find the tools and set them up to find your own way. I have viewed this episode twice and will continue to look at it as my reference.

I recommend adding new photos to a session by importing them, instead of dragging them to the capture folder from the operating system. The reason is that in the import process you can specify a template name for the imported photos, as well as descriptions and other metadata to be added. In addition, a preset can be applied to all imported photos. I have created a user preset with the basic lens settings to automatically correct distortions that I want to apply to every photo so I can save those steps in the development later.

Importing or dragging, I like to know where my files sitting on my hard drive, and where these four folders will be created? Let say I am a street shooter that put my files under a year director like 2001 with subdirectory for the date of shoot, like 23-01-2001. If I import this subdirectory files to a session, are these files stay at origanl directory and only mapping them to the session or do the c1 move them to a directory with session name, like 23-01-2001 project Z? The last question, the edit will be recorded in exif files sitting with raw file in the original directory or it is chain to the session? Thank you!
@tonicanabate6232

@@streets28mm When you import, you copy the RAWs from folder A to folder B. To get what you want, my suggestion is: 1) Create the session in which you are going to import the photos and in the dialog box that opens to create it you put: a) Name: the subfolder "23-01-2001" b) Location: the year folder "C:\Users\username\Pictures\2001" or whatever the path of the year folder where you want the RAWs to be stored is. Leave the rest of the values by default. - With those values, when you make an import to that session from any source folder, the RAWs files are going to be copied in the folder “C:\Users\username\Pictures\2001\23-01-2001\Capture”. - When you edit a RAW and export it to JPG, TIF or other export format, the result will be stored in "C:\Users\username\Pictures\2001\23-01-2001\Output". This way you have the RAWs in the Capture subfolder, and the processed JPGs in the Output subfolder but all within the folder you want. - (You can skip this so as not to get confused) For personal preference, I have modified the export presets to leave the resulting JPGs in the root of the session folder "C:\Users\username\Pictures\2001\23-01-2001". I even have a JPG export preset sized for Instagram that leaves the JPGs in a single folder, where I save images ready to be published on IG, regardless of the session. For example, the folder "C:\Users\username\Pictures\Instagram". When I export an image with the Instagram preset, it is stored in that folder no matter what session I am working in. But this is all a matter of export presets, nothing to do with creating a session or importing images into a session. 2) When you import images into the session, remember you are going to copy images from a source folder A to the session's Capture folder, which for the example we are using will be "C:\Users\username\Pictures\2001\23-01-2001\Capture". My suggestion is that you import directly from the camera's memory card. That is to say, that you insert the memory card in your computer and select as folder from which to import, the folder where the RAWs are in the memory card. Therefore, do not copy the RAWs from the memory card to a folder on the hard disk and then import from that folder into the session by making two steps. Instead, do one step by importing directly from the memory card to the session. I hope I managed to be clear and useful enough.

File management was definitely the most frustrating thing to get used to - being a new photographer when I first DL'd C1. Thanks for diving into this first. Great to reaffirm some of my workflow processes, as well as hear a few helpful tips I hadn't considered. Really appreciate your enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge around the Fuji ecosystem. You have a natural ability to articulate some of the more abstract concepts in very bite-sized, digestible pieces. You're one of the main reasons I shoot Fuji. Mahalos

THE best video on an introduction to Capture One. Even better than the videos that they put out themselves. Their videos are inclined to assume a certain level of experience with the software and a certain level of photography experience. Your video is very clear and well explained, even to a new photo editor. I've been using it for a while but picked up a few good tips myself. Looking forward to learning more as you continue.

I almost didn't watch this video because you implied I needed a knowledge of Lightroom, which I don't have. But I'd recommend your video to any new beginner who is inexperienced with post processing photos. Super job. I'm doing my homework and will be watching Lesson #2 soon. My soul is totally sold to Fuji, started with a x10 around 10 years ago and loved the fixed objective experience, it made me develop a more creative mind. Switched to the XT2 around three years ago and I regret nothing. On the software side, tried Lightroom, Darkroom and never found a sweet spot. Bought Capture 1 a month ago because I read about how it treated the Fuji x sensor information. Now with this tutorials are finally closing the circle around my sweet spot (keep them rolling, they are much appreciated) . Congrats on the work you are doing from Barcelona

Got a bit fed up with my workstream of FastStone, Fuji X-Raw Studio and Affinity Photo. I'm only a hobbyist, but I figure I'm putting plenty of fun hours into taking photos so I may as well simplify my home workflow a bit. I don't spend much money on other stuff, so all good. I'm loving the hot weather here in England at the moment and have had a few lovely times over the past fortnight when people have asked me to take pics of them on-the-fly and insta/email them over, which is my favourite thing. :)

Started with Capture One back in 2005 but switched to Lightroom in 2007 with the first version. My entire library of photos from 2005 to now is filed and tagged in Lightroom so I can easily search bring up photos from the last 17 yr by choosing one of the tags. The search is better with better tagging when you transfer photos from your camera. But going back to Capture One for my new Fuji X-E4 is a pain for management of my digital files. Lightroom had a good Library tool right from version 1.0 but back in those days Capture one didn’t. Lightroom was a much slicker product

I watched this and another in the series although I’ve been using C1 for some time, just because you’re entertaining and you never know what your might pick up. I learnt one thing I didn’t know; that clicking the name of the adjustment shows the Before/default setting. Good to know. I came from Aperture, so C1 felt natural to me, I never liked Lightroom much; I tried to switch to it exclusively for 6 months a few years back to immerse myself and learn it properly. I realised I just didn’t enjoy editing in it, not because I wasn’t used to it. The modular workflow didn’t work for me. When I switched to C1, to make up for C1s rudimentary Metadata editing (Lightroom isn’t much better), I adopted Photo Mechanic as my ingest, rename, organise, tag, rate, sort and cull system, before even starting up C1. For me, I find that saves me time down the line, and getting keywording done up front makes it SO much easier finding things later. Additionally, a lesson from Aperture’s demise was that I didn’t want to be stuck in a proprietary database, like Aperture, Lightroom and C1 (they all use the opensource SQLite DB btw), I wanted the metadata IN the file, so it would go with the Raw files. That’s where Photomechanic, as well as Exiftool, comes in, both of which I use extensively.Photomechanic is a powertool well worth learning to use properly, with it’s variables and templates and keywording lists being a real time saver to bulk sort and edit. Another tool I’ve been using lately is Fast Raw Viewer, which like Photomechanic is for sorting your images before import; it does not have the metadata editing, but is just as fast at culling, and specialises in rendering the Raw file in real time rather than just showing the jpg preview. It is the only viewer I know that shows you the actual Raw histogram, not the Jpg one, so you can see if the Raw file is clipped and unrecoverable, or it’s just the jpg that’s clipped with the data still there in the Raw. You can still toggle between the jpg and Raw histogram for comparison. Like Photomechanic, ratings and colour labels carry over into C1 as long as you’ve set C1 to update metadata from the accompanying XMP file. In Photomechanic, I’ve set it to update the Raw itself, which contrary to how it sounds is quite safe. For Fuji compressed Raw files though, it uses XMP files. As for photo editing, with C1 layers and adjustment tools I can do most of what I need in C1, but for touchups and skin editing have been training myself to switch over to Affinity Photo, it is so much smaller, faster and nimble if you don’t need any of Photoshop’s more esoteric features. I still keep Photoshop around though, but increasingly rarely need to fire it up.

As you mentioned, normally people take their photos from their FUJI cameras, and place them where they like them. Well, with Catalogs, you can Import from Current location, and in that case C1 does not make a duplicate of the photo, but only stores the edits in small files in locations where you choose. For those with lots of existing pictures, Importing into Catalogs from Current location is the best overall so you are not filling in your hard drive with duplicate fike sizes.

Wonderful start to the series. We've been looking for a really good breakdown of C1 since we got our XT3 and would like to switch up our editing flow. Your enthusiasm is contagious and you're making converts of us already!

Wow same here. Took a dive into C1 and then walked away because of the complexities. Thank you for making this video, it helped a lot.

The right video to the right time😃. I'm just in the phase of getting frustrated with C1🥴. The reason is that I always had the LR workflow in my mind and I started C1 without spending some thoughts on your recomendations. Now I'm really looking forward to the next C1 video. As a guy changed from Canon to Fujifilm I somtimes struggeling with the Fujifilmsystem 🤯- Your videos often gave me hints to answer my questions and help me to get deeper into the system. Congatulations🥳 Greetings from Cologne/ Germany

Thank you Thank you Thank you! This is an awesome tutorial. I am that guy in the video. Purchases C1 for fuji and doesn’t use for 1 year. Your explanation of the interface and the sessions vs catalogs is extremely helpful. Love the channel, love the topics (ISO explanations was terrific) love the energy.

What a great timing of this video! I had just purchased Capture One using a great discount code, but first wanted to understand this business of Catalogue vs Session. Thank you much. And a tip: If you install Capture One Express for Fuji (the free version), they start offering a discount to purchase the full version. I found that the discounts increase if you hold off for a few weeks.

Can’t thank you enough for doing a series of videos on C1. I’ve been using C1 Express for Fuji for about 1 year and just love it as a basic RAW editor... free editor 👍 For many years I’ve used PIXELMATOR to edit my pics but wanted a better RAW editor to manage the Fuji XTrans files ... voila... C1 Express. With the huge bonus of having the Fuji simulations built it. Love your channel.. keep up the great work !

Thank you so much Joe!! Yeah, I've used Pixelmator a few times. I think that once we all get over the C1 learning curve, that will be my go-to editor from now on. I'm also looking into Affinity Photo as a PS replacement.

Great presentation. I learned Capture with your tutorials. Thanks a lot! I think you can present in one of your next vids one more useful feature of Capture. When UI is set up, go to full screen mode. All three - tools, editing and browser panels slide out of the display and can be easily open with the arrow to the up, right or left. Full screen does not show zoom, but one can zoom in and out with two fingers on the track-pad. It's a very useful to know when working on smaller displays. I have an iMac 24" and now I only edit in full screen mode. Cheers,

Fantastic tutorial. You were 100% spot on. I tried out C1 over a year ago and though “yikes” and promptly ran back to Lightroom. Over the last few weeks I have again tried C1 (Express version for Fujifilm) and am start to really appreciate how it processes Fuji files over Lightroom. I look forward to your next C1 tutorial 👍
