Hey Capture One, this is great from Zoe as always, but focused on fashion problems and solutions. Would love to see a video that focuses on commercial and corporate photography. Not headshots, I’m talking environmental portraits tight and wides, lit and ambient light, often with competing color casts from mixed lighting and with varying degrees of light control, with a variety of skin tones, generally with no makeup. For instance, just did an environmental portrait shoot (4 setups in 30 mins in a busy working office moving from location to location, just me and one assistant) with an executive, nice furniture to pose him on, but offices had low ceilings and even flagging off overhead lights, my lights would reflect off the white ceiling onto his dark shaved head giving bright reflections that can take time to deal with. Nice shots with windows as backgrounds (common request from corporate clients) that require color and exposure balancing, reflection removal etc. Real world, bread and butter commercial work with tight budgets where we need to turn around retouching quickly. Thanks!

If I'm correct, the grain tool cannot be applied to a layer. It exclusively works on the underlying image layer, I believe. Great tutorial, by the way! I very much like Zoë's subtle approach to editing portraits.

GREAT!! At 21:50 on the lips why didn’t you use the Skin Tone Tool to match lip and clothing color?
@zoenoblephoto
@zoenoblephoto 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! You absolutely could use the Skin Tone Tool, with retouching and editing there's always many ways to do one thing so often it will just depend on what I'm preferring to use at the time. The Skin Tone is awesome to move all tones towards one particular tone so if I didn't like the clothing and also wanted to change that I would have definitely use the Skin Tone tool :)

Hi, thank you for the tutorial, only problem is that my Capture One does not have this wonderful AI masking tool at all? 😅 How can I get there?

Thank you. :). The Ai Masking tools were add towards the end of last year with release number 16.3. If you’re a subscriber then you can simply download and use this right away. If you have a perpetual licence, log into your account at Captureone.com to check for upgrade pricing. :)

You can copy and paste layers over or batch to multiple shots yet. You just would need to Clear the masks and reselect with AI :). Or if you use the new Subject/Background masks those are dynamic and they change automatically!

I find the title misleading since changing the colour of hair, nails, or any other local areas (other than skin) does not come under "Skin tones and color grading"). Have a look at the definition of "color grading" on Wikipedia to see that such changes are out of scope of "color grading". EDIT: I apparently stand corrected, as I had a deeper look and it looks like local adjustments also fall under "color grading". There is nothing wrong about a tutorial for using masks, but in this case the use of masks was often counterproductive. The Skin Tone tool can already select for skin tone only and affect the targeted areas more precisely than a mask. Note that Zoe had to adjust a mask to not include some hair whereas using just the colour range of the Skin Tone tool would have obviated that step. Targeting areas (e.g., even the background) due to their color (either through the Skin Tone tool or the Color editor) allows one to use very sloppily brushed masks (if any are needed at all) since one only has to exclude areas which have very similar colours. Only if areas with very similar tones are adjacent to the targeted areas, more precise (but typically not super-precise) masks are necessary.

Based on the content of our livestream today the description is absolutely accurate. As you and I discussed during the livestream, I will always recommend that when using the skin tone tool, it’s always good practice to complement it with a mask. Yes, rough masks can work but as Zoe demonstrated, building Ai masks is quick, easy and accurate. For sure you can define a range in the skin tone tool, but more often that not it can stray into unwanted areas. Using a mask just avoids that in the first instance. Not to mention you then get the added bonus of Opacity control on that layer. /David

@@CaptureOne One gets the bonus of opacity control also when using the Skin Tone tool (or the Color Editor) on a filled layer (from which one can quickly and sloppily brush away areas where there is unwanted spill). I believe we agree that sometimes using colour range targeting alone can be better (in terms of precision and speed) and sometimes precise masks can be very helpful. I believe pointing that out in a tutorial of this nature would have been helpful. FWIW, I stand corrected regarding the scope of "color grading" as it apparently does include local adjustments. So in that sense, changing hair color and nails, etc. absolutely fits the title and using masks for such areas is typically a very good idea. Mea culpa.
@CaptureOne

@@class_a Even creating a filled layer and brushing away areas could take longer than a quick Ai mask. There is no disadvantage to being “accurate” in this particular case. And once again, I’ll disagree that the skin tone tool can be AS accurate as creating a mask. Sometimes it can, mostly it’s just faster to throw in a mask rather than tweaking a range and monitoring what it’s affecting. David
