In this Livestream, we look at the editing process for the images from our Midwest Quest where David Grover and Paul Reiffer explored and photographed parts of the American Midwest.
For many travel photographers, the editing process begins or even fully happens while on the road. Because of this, the conditions in which we edit are often not ideal.
In this Livestream, we’ll look at the evolution of our edits from on the road to in the studio while considering the technical challenges and the process of fulfilling your creative vision.
We will edit a mix of images, including RAW files from the iPhone.

Hello David, hello Paul, thank you very much. For me, this was one of the most exciting livestreams in recent times.

Thanks! We’re aiming to bring a lot more “behind the scenes” and “what we really do” sort of content to people to hopefully help give a more rounded approach to the processes of photography - beyond purely the editing in isolation. 👍

I really appreciate the examples you used such as the vignetting in the city scape shot of Chicago or the building is blurry in the landscape shot. Always kick ass watching you guys!!

Great Video, I like Paul's eye for detail and the Google map trick was a smart move ! I agree with him on correction of the lens flare on that building, take it to Photoshop or the like for Local Editing. Although C1 is improving their masking techniques and Local Editing capabilities, IMO a RAW convertor/editor is mainly for Global editing, as soon as it comes to subjects in the frame I'll take it to PS to have better control. It was very enlighten to hear is point of view on editing, very constructive, please invite him again in the future. Thanks for sharing Dave and Paul. I am still waiting for that AWARD WINNING IMAGE button !

Hello David, hello Paul, the subject was very well chosen. Some photos have nothing in common with photography anymore. Everyone should ask themselves if they are a photographer or an image editor or composer. Personally, I am very impressed by the fact that Paul also showed some failed photos and how one can possibly still save the photo or when it is better to give it up and what attitude he has on the subject of photography. I myself have had similar experiences to both of you, there have been photos that were great when taken and imagined but then when viewed on the computer are rejects. Personally I am sometimes too fast and then later find errors in the picture about which I am annoyed. And ask myself why I didn't keep the image longer. The fact that Capture One allows you to talk about artistic aspects and that it is not a product-centric stream is an advantage. David showed some edits that are key features of Capture One and play up its advantage, but these were not too focused on and had not slowed down the discussion between you. More of this please.

As for ETTR (exposure to the right): I guess that the JPEG histogram on the camera is a safe estimate when shooting RAW if you want to protect your highlights, given that the underlying RAW histogram has more headroom.

Not always - I’ve seen JPG histo’s that are 4 stops different to the raw histogram on output. As a sense-check, maybe - but I’d suggest running some tests on your specific camera to work out how much headroom you really have 👍

Hi , for sony cameras i turn on zebras and set them to 107, that way you can be confident that nothing in the frame is overexposed if no zebras turn up
