Meant to film this video back in December, but better late then never! Here's 7 Fantasy Books to Read in Winter! Let me know the books you like to read during winter, and if you got any books for Christmas!

@@tracib.7725 Great choices! I read The Golden Compass years ago and I think it's about time I reread it and the rest of the series. First Law is another series I want to get to this year for sure, is there a cold setting in the First Law books?

Captured in Words awesome! Yes, there is. One of the main characters is a “North Man” and the opening scene is a snowy climate that is revisited periodically throughout the series.

You always find such cool art for your videos, I love it! I LOLed at WoT as an honorable mention. For the record there is a long winter in the middle of the series! 😂 so it definitely fits. I also would say Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik as another wintery book!

Thanks Jade! One of my hobbies has become searching everywhere for good artwork to use 😂 Yess I have Winter's Heart on my shelf which I'm assuming is where the long winter appears in WoT? Not that far in the series, but seeing that cover on the shelf made me want to include WoT in some way. Ooo awesome, I need to read Spinning Silver! I love cold settings :)

The 'yet to read pile' is only getting bigger now, while I still mean to re-read stuff as well. Seriously, how do people find the time? so...Looking forward to your summaries on WoT! I finished reading The Way of Kings on Dec. 31, though not much of a “winter book” per say, but nonetheless a nice cozy intense read! Currently I am FINALLY starting the WOT series. Just got to the Trolloc battle at Edmond’s Field last night! Couldn’t stop reading it, but had to put it down due to having to be up for work in 4 hours from the time I stopped reading. Awesome book so far, and looking forward to all the love & hype of the WOT fans have for this series.

@@CapturedInWords Also the way he describes the wights, which do most of the heavy lifting of magical villainy so far in the series, is down right creeptastic. The prologue of a Dance with Dragons remains one of the scariest passages I've ever read.

Some good choices. One book I really enjoyed in the winter a while back was The Terror by Dan Simmons. I know it's not really fantasy, more historical fiction. It was really good, though, I blew through it in like 2 sittings. So many descriptions of the cold it makes you feel cold even when it's warm inside. I loved the first Song of Ice and Fire book...the second bored the crap out of me until the last 100 pages or so. Then I lost steam on the 3rd, didn't finish it... even though lots of people say that's their favorite.

Honestly Assassins Apprentice is the only book series that made me cry. Constantly... I cried because of how Fitz was treated and when he, "lost his magic sense", because of Galen. I cried when he, with no control, Scryed on Molly and Burrich having sex. Just the idea that you are forced to watch the women you love, sleep with and love another man, broke the fuck out of me lol. To the point that there was a time when I wasn't able to reread the series lol. And in the last series I cried when Molly died lol. I cried on some much stuff, so I'll just end this here XD

Well, I expected some Brandon Sanderson on here (but I'm not really well acquainted with the Cosmere, so I don't know if they fit this theme). That Ice Wall in A song of ice and fire sounds like it is inspired by Hadrian's Wall. Which was built by Hadrian to keep the 'barbaric' Scots out of England. It would fit since the books hare heavily inspired by The Wars of the Roses.

Thanks! Yeah I had to stop quite a few times when reading the first book around 7 years ago, I'm not a big fan of books where all the characters are pretty much horrible XD I do plan on giving it a second try and see how it goes, but if it's not for me I think I'll just set it aside
@andrewreising4541
@andrewreising4541 5 жыл бұрын
@@CapturedInWords, I think you will find over the course of the series that, rather than all of the characters being horrible, they are just really complex, with some being basically good, some being basically horrible, but most capable of both good and evil. It especially gets interesting once characters that you have probably come to hate become POV characters, and you get inside their heads. If you decide to give up on it, I understand, but if you do get through it and like it, it is a series that is full of opportunity for theory and lore videos, and I would love to hear your take.

Hi Jay. I just got to know about discord from watching your video and I joined. But I'm lost and have no idea what to do there or how it works. Give me some directions please

Hey! Thanks for joining :) Once you join the server, on the left you will see a bunch of channels that you can chat on (introduce-yourself, book-recommendations, writing, etc.) Most of the main chat takes place on the General channel ^_^ Basically these channels are group chats where you can talk to other people on the server as well as myself. Discord can be a bit confusing at first! There's some good KZfaq videos out there that give a quick introduction for beginners

I'm currently wrapping up a work-related design project which I should have done near the beginning of Feb, after that I'll start uploading much more frequently and will try going full-time KZfaq! :)

I'm so sick of people using the word trope to explain why they hate a book. It's such a cop out excuse.
@CapturedInWords
@CapturedInWords 5 жыл бұрын
Wait but... I never said I hated any of these? XD There's a lot of "tropes" that I really like, which is why I love a lot of classic fantasy-- Yes they do use a lot of familiar tropes and formulas, but I kinda like that in some fantasy. (I only mention the tropes in the video, as the book does have them and some people don't enjoy them, I agree it is a bad cop out excuse to hate a book)
