That's when you know something is on the cutting edge. No time to make it very tidy when you need to make it work Although photography shoots in general will tend to look this way sometimes just out of expedience but in this case there is no other camera system that probably comes close to what's happening here so most things are going to be improvised
@wachocs16

That's because they are doing those animations in "Real time". Every frame of the animation is a different rescontructed 3d model based on a video footage Professional 3D scanning, the one that every movie studio uses is really similar to this one. Just that they take a photo of the character and not a video. Then optimize the texture and meshing of the model to make it artifatc free (specially in hair) and then add the movement with motion capture

@@zacharytaylor8523 Damn straight, got some real hella potential here. All Media Entertainment could experience a further massive improvement in graphical quality but also animation, although i do suspect there may be a dead point for awhile now. Or at least i definitely can't think of a better way/new route for further increasing graphics (photo realistic) and animation fluidity lol

The main challenge for this is affordability, with the second being setup in an appropriate space with the right lighting. It’s more widely marketable if it’s portable and sold as a service rather than a full product installation. Otherwise it will be, like the Matrix camera setup, a one-off tech showcase that exists only for a certain use case.

I think once the military gets involved financing to develop further won't be a problem, I think the storage and movement of the data will be the bottleneck for the time being. I could imagine this being a service though and movies or game makers hiring out the space and tech to do their movie/game and then taking away crap loads of data to render how they need. Hopefully it won't become like the Matrix tech though and be overused for the same type of application.

@@MikeSheehan727 while the specific scenes in The Matrix look better, it'd be impossible to shoot an entire movie with the Wachowski's rig. The subject should be in the center of the scene always and mostly still, the resulting footage came out of the cameras with many blind-spots because there were only 36 cameras so a lot of post-processing was needed to morph the shots of two different cameras to complete the "missing camera" in the middle. Also, all the cameras were at the same height so no up-down panning after the shot. Also the rotoscopy to replace the background was done by hand, opposite to this, which results in 3D models already separated from the background.

@wojtek4p4
@wojtek4p4 2 жыл бұрын
@@Nico1a5 Yeah, I might've slightly overestimated the required cameras. 4-5 per level feels like not enough though. In the worst case you'd film your face from two directions 45° to the side, which might result in crappy texture resolution and artifacting. With large angles between cameras, you wouldn't get any depth data for some concave features, while binocular view could do that. But 8 (16 for binocular views) cams per level, 3 levels (since top-down view isn't that important in VR) should be enough.

I’m scratching my head a bit. Considering the cost and complexity of this setup, isn’t the end result a bit crap? There has to be other ways of doing this for the same cost with a better outcome. As a technology demonstration I understand what they’re trying to achieve. As an actual filmmaking device, it leaves me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

There is a far better way. The Irishman (2019) used a system that allowed the capture of 3D data in-camera without any markers directly on set. There was the main cinema camera, flanked by two infrared cameras with powerful infrared spotlights, which captured a 3D scan of the faces. This was used to 3D scan the ageing actors in order to more easily de-age them afterwards. You obviously don't get a 360° capture that way, but the level of detail is much higher.

I felt the same, there's a saying in music production where 'fix it in the mix' doesn't exist and it's the producer's job to persevere until the performance is perfect enough to keep and I imagine the same goes for directors. It's handy to be able to go back and edit the fine details in post but it doesn't really compare to just getting it right on the day. I'm still really impressed by the technology that goes into a setup like this and it's fair to say that if this didn't exist then the next generation of volumetric video wouldn't be able to either. Seems like a stepping stone to better things.
@saturnuria1217
@saturnuria1217 2 жыл бұрын
Agree with all of the comments to my original post. This would be fantastic if it was a “budget” setup that anybody could do at home but even that many cheap action cameras, combined with the rental costs of the lights, the rigging and even the space is wayyyy beyond what most amateur filmmakers could afford. If this was being used for a video game I’d sort of understand it. But as it’s for a film, I don’t see how this is a better solution than storyboarding your shots and chroma-keying. Yes, the 3D capture allows shots to be chosen in post-production but when the output is this poor, why is that preferable to storyboarding? If you want a 3D output, use a stereoscopic camera. So yeah… other than that, I don’t know what problem this setup has failed to be a solution to. 😂

Hmm. The results look pretty rough. I can't really understand why, since there are so many good algorithms for background removal now, which don't even require 3D data.
@forwardtwo
@forwardtwo 2 жыл бұрын
It's creating a 3D point cloud of the person. With standard background removal, I'm still limited to the 2D image I captured. I can't rotate the person 180 degrees or have light cast against the geometry of the individual. Some recent research papers have it getting pretty close, but it's still years off from being doable for long-form cinema. With this, it's a real-time 3D capture of a person; meaning I can rotate them wherever I see fit, render lights and shadows against them because of the 3D point cloud data, and if I really wanted to get wild, I could have physics objects realistically morph against the person I've captured. 3D scanning stills is relatively easy now with smartphones, but 3D scanned moving vector data is insanely difficult to capture and compute.
@forwardtwo
@forwardtwo 2 жыл бұрын
Also to add, it's not the best photogrammetric video I've seen, but it's still really cool that it's essentially a bespoke solution built from the ground up.

This comment section might be the most brain dead of them all. First things first, this is an active solution to hand making 3D models for games and movies (typically simple things such as people.) Second of all, this is an old video, before the 3000 series cards came out. If you look at the tech now you’ll find that it’s much better, cheaper, and faster than modeling, animating, etc. all by hand and motion cap (since motion cap requires an active model. Also this is much cheaper than hiring several modelers and animators for a big company.

VisualFSM stands for visual structure from motion. This is done via bundle adjustment which is basically a sparse minimization problem solved by classic minimizers. No "AI" used for that part, as claimed by the video. Stereo vision also doesn't require "AI", as well as point cloud generation. Image upscaling does however. Doubt there is a lot more "AI" here. Complex state of the art methods, yes. AI probably not much. Otherwise very interesting video. Hope to see more content like this.

Systems similar to this concept exist. One good method is using a 3D scanner, fixing the model a little bit in post processing, scanning a texture map of the subject, rigging it, then influencing the model with a suit that the actor can wear through code. Honestly I think they will struggle to get this to look real, but it still does interest me.
