Momiji lived in a separate enclosure for about 12 weeks before and after giving birth to Choco and Donut. In this video the babies are just over 4 weeks old. Momiji found it very stressful being separated from the herd and frequently called to the herd. However, what really frightened her was the day Nagasaki Bio Park arranged for a film crew to come into her small enclosure and to film her babies. She was terrified by the intrusion and her need to protect her babies. Even worse, as she tried to run away from the film crew she became caught up in the ropes which had been laid across the top of the enclosure to deter birds from attacking her babies. Momiji suffered several wounds as she tried to protect her babies. Donguri tried to protect Momiji but she was rudely pushed into the pond. After the film crew leaves Donguri returns to guide the entrance gate to Momiji's enclosure. The PR manager saw how very upset I was and scoffed, as if it didn't matter if animals were mistreated. As far as he was concerned the capybaras with their use as promotional material, they had no Rights.

I have a hard time watching animals in distress. Momiji is a beautiful capybara and a great mother. This is cruel

I completely agree with you. One problem I come across in Japan is that many Japanese people, including many zookeepers, do not understand animals or feel their emotions. Japanese people put up with things that people in the West would not put up with. This may be partly why they are so insensitive to animals suffering.

That is infuriating. Is there anything we can do? I'm only one person, but I am in several capybara groups to which I could share this story and video. I see an address and phone number for the park. Would it do any good complain, or would that make matters worse?

Thank you very much for your offer of help. At the moment I don't think there is anything you can do. A friend of mine who speaks Japanese contacted the Biopark and suggested they might benefit from some of my suggestions (she put it very delicately) but the response was, in typical Japanese management fashion, to do the very opposite and exclude me from helping. This was when Hinase was not getting enough to eat and the keepers were too busy to feed her when she was in the mood to eat, so I offered to help. They absolutely refused on the grounds that I was a visitor and visitors are not allowed to help the keepers (Japan is a very rules bound society). Although in the past several keepers did ask me to help. However, I am very concerned about Kona, the breeding male, who was bred at Nasu Animal Kingdom to be friendly to people and super responsive to petting. He more than any capybara I've ever met loves to be petted. However, he is being kept alone at the back of the zoo where nobody can reach him. The keepers say he often prefers to be petted rather than fed! That tells you everything about his emotional state. If I can't get his life improved myself I may resort to organising a petition or asking people to write to the Bio Park. I will come back to you if there is something you could do to help capybaras and I really appreciate your concern for them.

@@CapybaraWorld Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't know much about Japanese culture. With the advent of the internet, I have learned a few things, mostly that I have a lot more to learn. That's why I asked before doing anything because I would probably go about in the worst way possible. I wish you good luck in your endeavors and am hoping for the best for all of the capybaras. I'm glad they have an advocate who cares. If there's anything I could ever do to help, I would more than happy to do so.

Thank you very much again for your offer of help. Learning about Japanese management was a huge learning curve and very disheartening. I will definitely come back to you if there is something you can do to help. I have written a blog about Japanese culture which you might find interesting including comments from an Australian lady who has lived and worked in Japan for over 60 years and corroborated my experiences: "Hierarchy in Japanese Society: Its Corrosive Effect and The Often Childish and Petulant Behaviour of Japanese Management": wp.me/p2HSJP-1g4

This is so sad :( Why was she separated in the first place?
@CapybaraWorld
@CapybaraWorld Ай бұрын
At the time, the biopark always separated pregnant females for 6 weeks before they gave birth and 6 weeks after they gave birth, which was really ignorant. And very dangerous as the female capybaras were often attacked by other females when they were allowed back into the herd, having been out of the herd for so long.
