Car battery charger repair - replace bad bridge rectifier

I got this charger as a gif from my brother but for some reason, it did not work properly. The charger features a voltage select switch so it can charge both 6V and 12V. However, the output voltage was always half at what it should have been so I opened it up and inspected its construction and principle of working.
I decided to replace the bridge rectifier and while doing so, I did not check the datasheet on time and connected it wrong so the magic smoke got released on the first one and I replaced it again 😅😅😅😅
All in all, this was an educational repair where I learned quite a lot, it is not difficult to be made and you will learn a lot as well in how such car chargers work by watching this video.

wouldn't the rectifier naturally heat up? i mentioned it because it might melt the wire that was touching its body when you closed the case. in some videos that i watched most rectifiers are isolated and connected to a heat sink of some sort.

It does get a bit warm especially when charging a flat battery but not so much to melt the solder. That is the reason why the case is opened so air can circulate and cool things off.

could you explain the hookup of the rectifier in a reply? I couldnt follow it without seeing it clearly.

There are two marked terminals on it. One with '+' and the other with '~'. The transformer is connected to the '~' pin and the one diagonally opposite of it. The '+' and its diagonally opposite pin make the output. You can think of it like 4 separate diodes, all pointing to the '+' pin.
