Another great video, I will probably try this on my compressor.. even in the closed in room it sits in, it's still noisy.

Thanks Matthew for this video. I am passing it along to my friend who has a compressor in his garage that is very noisey. I had a new muffler and some 1 inch pipe and fittings. So I had to get a reducer from 2 inch to 1 inch metal fitting. I welded the adapter to the muffler out. I used 1 inch pipe to run into the Ingersoll Rand compressor input. Yes it did help a lot because my Ingersoll Rand is a 7.5hp 150 psi 80 gallon. But I didn't keep inside long. I ran the muffler outside into an old 55 gallon barrel and filled the barrel with 2 /12 river rock with the bottom cut out. I hear absolity no noise from it now. I also built a box around the compressor and tank 32" x 36" and put 3 inch spray foam insulation inside. I then found an old blower fan from a furnace and installed it on the outside wall of the shop blowing outward to keep it cool. Then put a flap door 24" x 4 " on the outside. Most of the time I don't even know the monster is on. It took me about 2 days to do it all as far as working time. BUT it was well worth it. Ohh I also replaced the muffler with one I made from 18" 4" dia. well casing.threaded on one end to replace the filter inside from a air filter from a dozer. I doubt I will have to ever replace it. I think I have about 75-85 dollars in the items. Most I had laying around the shop. I hope this helps someone else, plus this video is also a very good idea. My IDEA is not something I got from a video. I just did a try and error project. But after hearing this Ingersoll Rand for 10 years I had to give it a try.

3dB broadband reduction at whatever frequency weighting your SPL meter is using probably isn't very representative of the reduction of high frequencies that the muffler absorbs, and it seems to me like there is more like a 6dB reduction around 4-5kHz where our ears are pretty sensitive so it's certainly helping. BTW, halving or doubling of SPL is +/-6dB, which is not the same as what we perceive as half or twice as loud; They say that half/double loudness is more like a +/-10dB difference. Not to be confused with combining two incoherent sound sources of the same level which gives approx +3dB SPL increase.

3 db reduction is 1/2 the sound energy but not 1/2 the perceived sound. 3 db is about the threshold for noticing sound increase/decrease. Still good from a hearing protection stand point.
@JamesDoylesGarage
@JamesDoylesGarage 3 жыл бұрын
3 db is a lot. I'm glad you had a meter of some kind. Seen a number of video's where they didn't and you just had to rely on what the guys was telling you and what the mic pic's up. The problem with that is most mics in phone have an audio compressor kick in if it's to loud, un less you use the db software app, like you did. Thank you for this video.
@super-z8943
@super-z8943 2 жыл бұрын
Also something to note, if the meter uses a dB(A) scale it won't measure the low frequency thumping noise. Hence it can't appreciate the reduction in pad-pad-pad noise that is evident. Stock muffers seems less effective than diy versions though.

Another option might be to simply draw air through a port in the exterior wall. That may hinge on the situation outside the wall.

I did that exact thing, ported it into the HVAC blower for the house, after the evaporator coil. I wanted it also to intake dehydrated air.

How about a little out building on the side of the shop to be fully insulated? Something to keep out the noise and also protect the equipment from the elements.

Nice, thanks! So one question what about air filter on muffler intake so it doesn't get full and clogged with dust and degrade all that fallows? Unlike when installed in car exhaust where air is already filtered on intake and the heat of the engine combined with bursts of higher pressure at high speeds and rpms you don't have anything blowing it out constantly and burning up contaminants etc, seems like you need a high air flow car filter installed on this intake or you'd be SOL pretty quick depending on how dusty etc your air is in a shop to begin with as to speed of such, but SOL at some point without prefiltration on that intake at any point.. I would think. Ideas? Comments? Etv Welcome

Without the muffler that air would go directly inside the compressor. If it's good enough for that, I don't think a muffler that is made to deal with air full of soot created by the combustion process will care too much about it
@flasher702
@flasher702 2 жыл бұрын
did you measure how much of a difference it made with JUST the rubber hose making that 90 degree turn? How much is the muffler doing and how much is just the rubber hose? That muffler is for frequencies produced by typical 4 stroke car engine RPMs which may not be similar to your air compressor.

To increase Sound level with 3db takes the double the energy but it takes 9-10db to increase the double Sound level that your ear hears. So 65 db is the half of 75 db for the ears but and takes 3 Times less energy to produce the Sound. This comes from a Guy working with audio.

So, the obvious question. .. would a larger diameter rubber hose help with noise, compressor efficiency etc? I'm going to try a 2" hose reduced at the inlet. I'm going with the muffler too

@@MsMango-rq6cw I bought a car radiator hose (about 2" ID) then I used plastic plumbing fittings to step down reduce it from 2"-1 1/2"-1". I used a bigger muffler than pictured and a cleanable car air filter at the muffler intake. It's been on a few year and works terrific on my two-stage 60 gal compressor. The filter doesn't need too much attention due to its size. It's reasonably quiet now

Ok but I would have also measured if there is any change in the amount of time it takes to fill the compressor from a given tank pressure. Just to make an extreme example, if the muffler makes the compressor run twice as long to fill the tank, it might not be worth it. If the difference is just a few seconds, it probably is etc
@T0tenkampf
@T0tenkampf 2 жыл бұрын
He knows that thrush type mufflers are non restrictive by design. Most car guys do. The fact that the muffler has 2.5" ID connections and the pump intake itself is 1" NPT assures that the latter is the more restrictive of the two at any intake velocity.

I tried this years ago....it works, but is not that affective because, by design, a car muffler is meant to deal with a much higher flow volume, very high heat, AND is targeted towards the maximum running effecientcy of an internal combustion engine.....horses for courses. ANYTHING you place in line with the intake is going to work to some degree. Because heat is not an issues in this application, probably the cheapest most effective noise baffle is one constructed from a short length of PVC pipe that has been pre-packed with couse stainless steelwool to act as wadding. After all, what we are trying to do is to introduce some form of 'shock absorption' into the incoming flow thereby reducing the amplification of air hammering upon the back of the reed valves as they slam shut upon each cycle. More than trying to 'muffle' sound waves, we are trying to 'baffle' air flow, to create more internal pathways which confuse the flow making it more difficult for the inward rush to compress to the point, where, drumsticks are 'pounding' upon drum skins so to speak. That 'heavy metal' sound cannot be totally eliminated, but by tweeking the pack of the wadding, it can be reduced to a tolerable jazz like shuffle. To be on the cautious side, I did fit a metal tea strainer in each end pipe of my canister to prevent any of the course steelwool wadding (industrial pot scourers) from working their way into the compressor and scouring the bores..
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
there's another video where a guy puts the end of his hose in a 5 gallon pail stuffed with rock wool and screen material. The stuffing and screen create the baffle and it adds several pathways, so the sound is greatly reduced... for cheap!

Michele that's obvious: the AGC in the phone or camera is continuously adjusting the recording volume to keep it optimal for the recording. That is why the creator of the video attempted to use a sound meter to measure the sound pressure, and why you cannot use the recorded video to take the same measurement
