What's cool is seeing how far an ignition coil can throw a spark at atmospheric pressure, versus how short of a distance it can throw that spark in a 10:1 compression engine cylinder where the volume of atmospheric pressure air is compressed 10x smaller and becomes much more dense. I mean, a few hundredths of an inch in a spark plug that is extremely old and worn means the difference between a spark igniting the fuel-air charge, and the coil being unable to ionize the gap and a wet misfire occuring. Very cool. :)
@jonathanpalmer2282 жыл бұрын

Manhattan-Norm or 1-Norm is the mathematical explanation for this :-) really awesome!

Oh ok so after it ionizes the air in one particular path it immediately finds another path where the air has not been ionizes and so forth. Constantly looking fir a new path of keast resistance. It constantly looks for a new path at a frequency that is determined by the speed at which it can find and complete a new path, which varies very slightly hence if you listen very closely you can hear the differemce in the noise of the arking !

Incorrect, because ionized air is actually conductive. If the air was sufficiently ionized, the circuit would be completed and stay on that one circuit, but that's not the case.

So it's more that superheated air rises so that ionized path lengthens upward until it disconnects or is no longer the pat of least resistance and a new arc forms. This is actually how spark gap transmitters and tesla coils work: charge builds up in the capacitor until the voltage rises high enough to form an arc, then the charge bounces up and down the circuit through the arc forming a high-frequency signal that can be 'sorta' tuned.

I always thought it was the easiest path, not the shortest. Like a meandering river isn’t taking the shortest route but the route of least resistance. Another example the easiest way up a mountain isn’t straight up but zigzagging switch backs.

Drake, I'm wondering how these shorts are going? Do many people discover them through the feed, or is it too early to tell?
