-----------------------------------
I want to share a reupholstery I did on a Toyota Rav 4 car driver's seat. As we can see at the beginning of the video the front leather panels were partially torn, besides of being too brittle.
This car as many other similar car trademarks the leather is on the main seat and backrest panels. The other parts were upholstered in vinyl material. In fact I had to redo the whole seat and backrest front portion.
The old panels were useful to get the templates. Not trustable 100% though. It was necessary to somehow correct while outlining the contour.
The old cover parts were transferred to the cardstock paper in order to get flat patterns. The necessary seam allowance was added to the leather and vinyl material edges. The making of templates technique is taught in our basic upholstery courses.
A similar perforated leather was used for the central panels, both seat and backrest. Plain leather for the lateral panels. The other parts in vinyl were reattached together to get the similar OEM pattern.
I hope you find this video helpful!

It is automotive, medium density, bonded foam 5 mm thick. It is bonded because it has a scrim on the reverse that is useful as backing cloth and helps the piece slide over the sewing machine table.The scrim is more elastic breadthwise. It has the advantage that it is ready and we do not need to be gluing down a backing cloth on one side of a foam.

I have used leather material for the main top panels. Vinyl material for the side and back panels. That is the way most of these cars come upholstered, leather is only used for the main seat cushion and backrest panels.

It is Pfaff 1245-706/47 very similar to Pfaff 545 and 145 which is older than the two. That’s great but what do you do if you’re trying to pattern from a stretched out panel? I am currently doing a Lancia seat contoured center and the front panel and sides are all one piece? I have looked everywhere on KZfaq for my answer.

@@mrshortcut6265 That is great! The seat covers are going to be in genuine leather material? I do not want to assure, but it is possible I could prepare a specific course related to those bulky bolsters in leather. I mean a technique to make the shaping process easier. I assume this is the hardest issue not only for you but for many car trimmers.

@@Cechaflo thank you for taking interest in my dilemma sir. The seats are to an older Lancia sports car. They are made with black vinyl. My problem is that the two inside corners are stretched and is difficult to get a correct pattern from. Imagine a horseshoe. The panel that I am having difficulty with is in horse shoe shape. The two corners inside the horse shoe are stretched out of shape because the center portion is tagged down. Please forgive me. I know that I will get this figured out and I very much appreciate your guidance. I will let you know how it turns out with photos. Thank you, Jay

Good morning, I am a subscriber who has been following you for a while... I would like to know if to do this kind of work, you have to have a special machine or just buy reinforced needles!? the front seats of my vehicle are cracked and I would like to "either do it myself by following your video or give them to be done" (too bad I am so far away, otherwise I would have come to see you) thank you 😃

Good morning my friend, A double or triple transport sewing machine can do this kind of work. A regular simple transport sewing machine can also do this work. I used to work with these machines in the past. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5l4dbtzqaqvn6M.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jMV5jMmhnOCmln0.html The option of doing the covers here in Mexico could work out. I would be glad to perform them. I would need the old cover (in good shape) in order to replicate it the way it is including the bulky/stretch portions, so you would fit it on in an easy way. FedEx, DHL, etc. are good means of shipping items. The covers would be here in less than a week. As soon as they are ready I will send them back to you again.

 I understand. Hopefully the ointment/conditioner works out after the good wash with the soap for leather. The ideal application would have been on the reverse side of the leather. Most of the time it happens that for automotive leathers some tanneries do not apply a porous sealer/lacquer. They use a hard sealer instead that covers the natural pores of leather material. Consequently it is difficult for the conditioner to pass down through. Of course at the beginning everything is alright because the leather is full of oils and fat liquors that preserve the leather soft and pliable. That is why I said hopefully. Perhaps it would need several sessions of application until getting back its flexibility and softness. Let's wait for the outcome!

what is the function of the paper template if you have the original panels?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 ай бұрын
I transferred the old parts to the paper to make flat templates. I used them latter to do the co-pilote seat cover. (This car model has exact same seat both pilot and passenger, only the plastic trims are opposit) I we do upholstery very offen, we can save templates for any future car, that case it is advisable to make them using a hard carstock, MDF or metal sheet.

so did you use a seam ripper to separate the old seat panels? and did you make paper templates, is that what the green and orange pieces are?

Yes, did. I transferred the old parts to the paper to make templates. The old cover parts were transferred to the cardstock paper in order to get flat patterns (green and orange). I'm a bit puzzled here. Why can't I use the old piece to trace a pattern directly on the new material? (Taking into account the seam allowance of course) And usually I have trouble with the measurements because of the stretched or shrunk old material. Maybe I'm doing something wrong and are the templates a solution I'm not understanding yet
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 ай бұрын
If the old cover is in good shape it could be placed directly on the new material. Let's remember the pattern is not thoroughly flat; it has stretch/bulky areas. In the case of this video the old cover was too distorted because of daily use and too much tension. Usually in car seats a half side of a piece is similar to the other half side. I checked it out and to my surprise it was not the same. That is why I had to do some adjustments and trace additional patterns in cardstock paper and butcher's wrapping paper.

@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 9 ай бұрын
@@daytonpyro First thing to consider is to find the stretch side of leather material. This tip helps to place the leather in an advantageous position to do the wrapping. Sometimes it is necessary to make the wrapping in sections. For instance if I would have a piece with a lower recess then I should start from this part upwards to the sides. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ms6ddq131bXXj2Q.html Actually, all cow/bull leather hides stretch breadthwise. Many leather car trimmers agree with this rule. But, I have found there are exceptions on some very stretchy portions on the leather hide, such as legs, belly, etc. Perhaps some of the scattered videos on our channel are useful. I would like to prepare a specific video
