I moved to Thailand and looked at buying a Pick UP Truck for three years before buying three years ago. Mitsubishi, Mazda BT50, Ford Ranger, Nissan, Toyota Hilux, Isuzu are all manufactured in Thailand for the Australian market. I decided on the Toyota Hilux: Quality and build of the Pickup Truck compared to the Ford. The Toyota diesel engine is less complicated than the Ford bi turbo, Ford have issues with the auto box. Toyota reliability is renowned. The large number of Toyota dealers compared to the Ford. Toyota customer service. After three years of ownership of the Toyota Hilux 2.4 diesel, I have had absolutely no issues (no warranty work) and have only changed the oil every 10,000 kms or 6 months from new.

I own ranger wiltrack, my brother owns 2017 TRD Hilux. We both agree Toyota has better build quality and feels more solid. Ranger smoother engine, more features, but feels cheaper.

I find theres always small subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) advantages given to the Ranger in a number of these Ute review comparisons with the Lux. One of the more glaring examples of this in the video is the fact that the Ford dealership in question somehow "sold out" of all their Standard Rangers and only had an upgraded FX4 in stock for the test. Throughout the video its easier on the eyes to see Fords blacked out Trim, leather seats and upgraded cosmetics as opposed to Toyota's non leather/standard fit out. A comparison with a Toyota Rogue would have been more fair but of course it was overlooked. Would you ever see the other way round where Ford would be in the same situation? Small advantages like this I feel only strengthen the underlying push of these car review sites that have potentially vested interests from Ford. Call me a skeptic or a Toyota Homer but I do feel as though there is a big push by these review companies with an incentive to push the Ranger from Ford. I cant completely blame them though as Toyota has left the door wide open with their more recent lack of innovation and of course DPF issue. Whether you are a Toyota or Ford enthusiast I encourage you to cheer for the "other side" as it only means we as consumers win. Iron sharpens iron and continued innovation and competition from both sides only leads to a better product overall for us consumers. I know Toyota feels the heat and will come back even stronger with their next series so I can't wait.
@satya.anandakrishnan
@satya.anandakrishnan 4 жыл бұрын
Well said man. While i personally fancy the Ford, we should aim to have impartial reporting and going back to your FX4 thing, if they really wanted to be neutral, they should have talked about the direct Hilux Comparison for the Ford Ranger FX4 (Rogue) instead of ignoring it. And can't agree any more with the "cheer for the other side" thing, really should be pushing every manufacturer to up their game.

Good to see the old 2011 based Ranger still takes it in a general setting. Remember that it was the first pick up ute thingo to do 3.5t towing. The first of the big body, car comfort utes. Navara V6 was only thing with more power when the PX came out. Hilux has been behind the ball for ages. Its not bad by any means. But for the price, its behind most of the competition. With that said, ranger better get that rumored Powestroke 3L V6 soon. And the Everest spec rear end would help.

I would suggest you do a 5 years long term review stating: Total cost of service and repairs. Length of time they are off the road being fixed. Then sell them on the open market and calculate the depreciation from the new price. From all that calculate the total ownership cost. That is when you realise that the Toyota Hilux is the winner for your pocket.

Almost every owner will spend minimal time off road and far less on challenging tracks so in real terms off road testing is minimal in relation to how people will use these cars. Personally $60,000 to thrash in the bush is only for the quite wealthy, I would buy an old Land cruiser for doing a lot of heavy duty off roading you won't drop a lot of money when you pinstripe it or some minor dents.

Would love to see a comparison between the updated Ford 2.0ltr and upcoming releases of the BT50, DMax and Hilux. Loved your review. Think the Hilux/Ranger debate is a little like Apple vs Samsung debate. Both make excellent phones and comes down to eco system. I’ve driven both and my heart loves the Ford. But Toyota’ cheaper price, larger network, more capable off-roader chops and higher resale price sealed the deal for me. Just waiting for the 150kw update and full review of the Hilux in September.

So to summarize, if 80% of your time or more will be off road, you'd be mad not to buy the hilux, and if 80% of your time or more will be on road, you would be mad not to buy the Ranger. To that I would also add, that if you are buying as a touring vehicle to tow a van or large boat, you would be mad not to pick the Ranger (more comfortable ride, better tech and cabin, better towing). And some say yeah but the Hilux is unbreakable, and I would say yeah but Ford is built tough and the Cybertruck is bullet proof - Better to look past the silly marketing and focus on the actual vehicles ;-)

The ford makes more sense the vast majority of ute owners go off road rarely and even then a 2 wheel drive would probably suffice, so for most of the time the ford is the better option "no Chiropractor needed" also you get more for your money, and in the looks category the ranger looks like a handsome unit, the hi lux more like a chinese try hard.

I'd love to see the long term $$ spent on maintaining/repairing both vehicles(not just within 5 years of capped price services and general maintenance) and the number of times each one let the owner down. It would always be Toyota for me, but I'm a typical Toyota fan boy. If for no other reason than Ford (and Holden) have rubbish customer service, I've experienced it first hand. Toyota not so much, easy to get parts for quickly and better customer service from my experience. Saying that I always service my old Toyota myself because I'm a tight arse.

Real good comment considering the DPF issue and stuff all support that cost many people a lot of money getting stuck in the middle of Australia and having to foot the bill because Toyota would not cover anything out side of the car repairs, not the cost to get it towed back or the 2 weeks stuck in Alice Springs and the car was in warranty. All car companies shaft you just the sheep believe the hype and BS of Toyota more. Do yourself a favor and just buy a landcruiser nothing better.

Yeah after travelling last year me thinks Toyota needs to work on its unbreakable motto. Broken Toyota’s everywhere we went. Rangers and BT’s. Nope. In saying that, I’ve never heard of a vehicle without an issue of some kind.

Wondering if you could do an all round review on the 2020 Ford ranger wildtrak 2.0l bi-turbo. Looking at getting one but already have the 3.2l 5 cyl 2016 Mazda bt-50. Towing a family caravan is the main reason I am worried about getting the smaller 2.0l engine over the 3.2l

Stick to the bigger engine if towing. Torque is more important than power for towing. The 2.0ltr with twin turbos is putting a lot more stress (hence wear out) on the engine than the 3.2ltr.

i don't understand why Toyota went from 3litre down to 2.8...shouldn't they have moved up in engine size or at the very least stayed at 3000 instead of going backward's...and why leave it at 4cylinder...don't get me wrong.. i love hilux...that's all i've ever had but...should have gone with at least 4litre 6cylinder...that's my opinion...Toyota Diehard...!

I have never driven any utes so far. But I would like to add some of my experiences with Ford in the comment sections. I have owned Ford Focus 2014 diesel. I must say Ford has the best steering response and driving dynamics compares to all the Japanese and Korean cars (except European car). They are fun to drive and you get sense of control and safety when you sit in the Ford (I don't know why maybe it's me only). It's still going strong even after 284k. Ford is hands down winner until the car is under warranty. But Toyota will give you exceptional Peace of mind after the warranty period is over. All the spare parts of Toyota are Supercheap and Literally any farmers or local mechanic will guide you if anything is wrong in your Toyota ute (I love in country Australia and all you will find over here is land cruiser ute or Hilux ute).....Ford are designed in a way that only Ford can fix it. Verdict: if you have few extra thousands and enjoy driving and wants smiley feeling while driving then buy Ford Ranger. But want peace of mind and concerned more about wallet then go with Toyota hilux.
