To be fair, 孤独 (kodoku) is a lot harder to write compared to 一人 (hitori). 孤 in particular is rarely used in other words (the only other use I've seen is in the word for "orphan"), so it's not a kanji you often encounter and get familiar with. You'd probably encounter it in school a few times and rarely ever have to use it outside of that.
