I remember around the time this commercial was on tv (93ish?) it was on heavy rotation during after school cartoons. My homie Reggie and I had a classmate who’s name was Carmello. My patna Reg’ would sing the lyrics “Stretch it out, Caramello” (he would say “out” 3x’s in a echo effect before “Caramello”). Every time Carmello was around. He’d do this cause he knew it would make me laugh uncontrollably and it would piss off Carmello (I remember Carmello saying saying he didn’t really notice this commercial until Reg’ started singing this everytime he was around). And because I could see Carmello had a look on his face like he smelled some shit, it would just make me laugh even harder. 26 years later and randomly remembering that whole shit I just described and now here I am. It’s childish as all hell but it still made me crack up thinking about it

I wrote this commercial with my art director partner Dennis Stevents at Doyle Dane Bernbach. Tim Dwight worked really hard on every scene, coming up with his own bits. We cast him for his funny facial expressions and cool singer vibe. The singer had actually just released a big single -- very soulful -- can't remember his name, but we were very lucky to have booked him. Maybe someone can help? Something about rain in the South.... This aired on the Grammys in 1989. This was pre-CGI so all the effects were practical (props).
