This Joyride is gonna be a little different from the rest. Rather than testing one board, we're gonna compare two boards with the exact same dimensions...but two very different constructions.
Board specs
Brand: KT Surfboards
Model (both): All-Around Thruster (AR)
Dims (both): 5’6 x 18.45 x 2.13 x 23L
Construction (white): PU core + epoxy resin
Construction (black): Stringerless EPS core + carbon (innegra) wrap, vacuum sealed with epoxy resin.
Which works best? Well, it depends...

I think you should have compared a pu to regular eps epoxy glassed board. The eps stringerless carbon wrap are a thing of its own.

But i would love to see a video comparing many boards from different shapers in their pu and eps equivelent ‏

Totally agree, best should be: PU standard glassing, PU light glassing, EPS with stringer epoxy resin, EPS epoxy stringerless, the most common options at the market

You can think about it this way: Assuming we're talking new boards, a new off-the-rack PU/PE board is around $700+ these days (ouch) and a custom carbon-wrap from Dark Arts or Varial is around $1300. That's 2x the price... but the board will retain its pop for 3x or more time, assuming it's not a dog. I'd call that a pretty good deal, but the risk of getting a dog is real.

Awesome. But you missed one really important point. What was the weight of each board? It looks the black was lighter than the white, by watching you surf, and by your comments. What about a video comparing two boards, on same dimensions dinentions, and weighting the same? Than we’ll have a conclusion on different constructions in general. Excluding the weight factor.

Yeah the carbon board definitely weighs less and is more buoyant. But that's kind of the point, to see how the exact same shape differs. Carbon will get you floating more over the water while PU allows you to sink your rail much better. But you're right, usually you will have more volume with a PU board than other constructions.

exactly how I feel about riding PU vs EPS. Each one has its time and place. I've been riding an EPS hypto krypto for a long time and my confidence on that board in unmatched. In bowly holow NJ waves that board is the best there is, but when its a softer wave/windy I struggle with it a lot. I think PU is the everyday board choice but EPS can really enhance your surfing experience. When I ride EPS+epoxy in the wrong conditions I'm complaining the whole session though and constantly switching boards haha. The stone harbor kid.

This is random but I have to say something ive been holding it in too long. Watching Mikey is like looking in a mirror, we look EXACTLY the same. Same nose eyebrows, body shape, same height, nearly same skill level he's probably a little better. and top it off my name is Mikey! it's pretty weird. if you ever want to meet your long lost twin, I am in florida just south of flagler beach. (Where the waves are terrible 95% of the time but still go out). Ive never surfed anywhere good just cape Hatteras a couple times. But its all good, because all I have to do is watch Mikey surf these killer spots and it's like I am too. (I wish it worked like that lol). Anyway i love the channel and content keep it coming. Yeeewww!

you are spoiled for choice. In the 70's we had one good /new board that had to last until you saved enough for a new one.. To last they had very dense foam, 3 ply stringers and 2 layers of 3oz on bottom .1 on deck. Airs only became possible when Kelly and Co got board makers that give them "burner" boards with one light coat, one filler coat, no gloss.. It is much easier to try things when your board is a throwaway. To us, our board was the gate to happiness. You didn't risk it too much. It took 3 months of saving to get another. If you broke yours, and had no oldie back up, you had to borrow. After it went onshore and they came in.

Awesome video and great surfing. As one of the other comments said, you need to know the weight of the board, so then you can figure out the density. The density is the first thing that will affect the float (that "on top of" vs "in" the water feeling). That EPS board probably weighs a whole pound less so it's going to be way floatier. Also, you need to check how close the rail shapes are because someone as good as Mike can definitely feel a slight difference in rail. Then you need to figure out a way to measure the flex. Way too many variables beyond just the shape! Finally you should've painted the PU black because black boards look cool.

buoyancy / float is actually largely decided by volume if you look at the calcs. a kg may feel different when you're turning because of the amount of weight you're pushing is being reduced but the floatation won't be changed a whole lot - the same way the change would be minor if you lost a kilo of weight. & flex is bs imo 🤪

The same difference exists between PU and balsa wood. They're all great to ride. I've had some of my best rides on solid balsa with a redwood stringer, I've had some of my best rides on stringerless EPS/epoxy. I don't want to eat at the same restaurant all the time, either.

I find production epoxy boards to stiff in feel. Carbon can make that better or worse depending on the type of cloth and layup. Is KT producing these offshore? I can’t imagine them all coming from the small shop in Maui or maybe just the prototypes. Vacuum bagged epoxy with glass fiber is the sweet spot for me. You get a lite, crazy strong board that flexes and rides like a PU board. Canibal core vac in Florida do it well. He uses different glass cloth thats finer with more layers. It just feels better.

Seems to me like if you are paying for the tech of the carbon, then maybe manufacturers should incorporate some kind of a ballast insert in the deck that you could change out for the conditions, so you could have a bit more weight/dampening when you need it or lighten the board when you are looking for a more lively response.... ... I'm available for consult if anyone wants to make bajillions.
@daliks
@daliks Жыл бұрын
adding weight doesnt help with dampening properties or the need for a clean faced wave. it would simply offset the weight That is because the carbon is way stiffer and stronger then the fibreglass in those specific directions. Looking at my YT channel you couldnt tell, but i make surfboards and i also offer a certain model in fibreglass AND in carbon. same shape rides significantly different.
@daliks
@daliks Жыл бұрын
and further, the responsiveness of the board wouldnt be affected in the same way as different constructions. fun idea though..

There is no such thing as two exact Surfboards. I will make it simpler. No fingerprints or snow flakes are the same.Kai Lenny rides for Redbull and he has over 30 of the same boards some even the same template and fin set up and he will tell you everyone of them ride different.

You're too small of a dude to ride a carbon board that size. They're very buoyant
@daliks
@daliks Жыл бұрын
only if the core is eps/lighter.. the carbon itself weighs about the same as fibreglass. vacuumbagging does make it hold less resin, but the biggest difference is the ability to use a lighter core.
