A gadget I find works well for cleaning carbs is a sonic bath cleaner. I bought one second hand from a printer repair shop that closed and its quite amazing how well it works. The only thing is you have to do a thorough degrease first and sometimes it can take a couple of days but certainly makes life easier.

Agree. I would love to have one, but I do so few carburetors that I can't justify the shelf space.

It works great for cleaning all kinds of parts, not just carbs - especially when heated.

I went through and read the comments to see if some one had recommended vinegar, and alas someone did. I also saw where you don’t want to invest in an ultrasonic cleaner since you do so few. I have a solution that might fit you, and others that come along this video into the future. I use cleaning vinegar, it usually found in the cleaning isle at the grocery store, it really cheap, because it’s not food grade. Next a bucket like you already have here. Lastly a palm sander. Yep a palm sander, put it all together, strap that palm sander to the lid of the bucket and let r rip. While it’s not a “ultra sonic”. It serves the purpose. I suggest sitting it outside as it’s a bit noisy. The vinegar can be strained and re-bottled and used several times. The only thing that would make it work better is getting a metal bucket and a portable single heating element, for like a single cooking pot, so you could heat it up before running it through the vibration. ✌️

Always great to clean all the ports in an old carb. Especially if they have been sitting with ethanol based fuel in them. FYI, The series of holes in the throttle bores above the idle ports are the transfer holes. Unlike a Holley that used slots, autolite used holes. The idle hole and the transfer holes are all fed from the emulsion tubes. The idle ports are metered with the idle/air mix screws, the transfer hole are not metered. As the throttle blades open the transfer holes are exposed and vacuum pulls extra fuel through them until the booster come in. If throttle blades are open to far at idle and too much of the transfer holes are exposed, it will be difficult to adjust idle with idle air mixture screws. Air for the idle mix is pulled through the small holes in the booster assembly. Autolite 2100 and 4100 are my favorite carb for stock and mild applications. So reliable and run so well on a huge variety of engines. They are not easy to modify for performance use and why most people ditch them for Holleys.

Carb/choke cleaner spray is always stocked here in Ontario Canada at Canadian Tire. Why not use an ultrasound cleaner with your favourite cleaner? A tooth brush works good as well and compressed air.

Great video; enjoyed seeing how those guitar strings are used. Had only a vague idea of where all those passages went previously. An unfortunate side effect is, now that I know how much work is involved, buying a new carburetor seems to be feasible. 😆

Great video Jeff!! Sometimes one has to improvise! I don’t know which brand of gasoline you used for the bucket, but the PEA additive in Chevron Techron is the best at cleaning fuel deposits. Other than their carb/fuel injector cleaner it’s added to all their gasolines. ✌🏻🏁

Get a sheet of very fine sandpaper and a flat surface and check the surface of fuel pump and power valve cover, they will warp and leak and remove the fuel inlet fitting on the front. Sometimes on the early carbs there is a fine screen behind the fitting.

I've done this before as well, and like you said it's not the go to, it's the "it will do in a pinch" method. I've also used Mineral Spirits & even Acetone...... but it all comes with a level of "Don't be an Idiot" when doing it. Good video man.

Thank you Mr Jeff for just now doing an autolite carburetor I have given up on mine since I checked and googled all the information I could mine still had the metal tag on it but nobody could give me any information or guarantee that was the right kit to put the autolite back together so I have given up on the autolite and I'm now trying to purchase a used holley

Mr Jeff at the risk of being thought a fool that autolite carburetor does not have any information on the base plate or the carburetor itself other than two what look like clock circles probably a date code of some kind now then on this tag it says Autolite C8VF J A 9E 15

Here's another tip taught to me at ETMS school: Take your wire cutters and trim one of your acid brushes so only about 1/4" of brush is left. The remaining brush is a lot stiffer amd works better. The full length brush is too soft for what you're doing here.

Hello Jeff. Just something to maybe be aware of: I have had the gasket for the power valve not seal all the way. Gas will tend to seep through the edges. The result causes excess fuel making it run real rich. (Eye burning rich) George B.

Usually if the carburetor needs rebuild you're gonna replace all the gaskets so I would say it's not that frequent

Muzzleloader measures and powder horns are always brass so you don't accidentally create a spark from steel on steel and blow yourself up. The same theory may apply here. Don't know but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable doing what you are with that much gas and in particular fumes. Probably not that many steel parts there though I guess.

Lacquer thinner works really more gooder, ... be cautious, most plastic containers do not support lacquer thinner. Also, a bead blaster works really well on low pressure for the outside areas..careful around the openings where threaded and where washers/pump surfaces that need to be smooth.

I soak in Simple Green. I had an old carb from a 60s fire truck that was gummed like molasses inside. I tried all the products mentioned as well as lacker thinner and acetone and nothing worked. Simple Green even diluted with water cleaned it up to where I did not have to scrub it much at all.
