Man, you're the reason I love the internet and youtube! I've been struggling with my Shadow 600, learning on the fly! The bike had very little maintenance, so as one problem emerges, I find out what is causing it, which has led to another problem revealing itself, when I adjust or replace the original thang. RIGHT NOW, I've been fighting a fuel problem, where it seems like it's running out of gas, with half a tank left. I recently took a few things apart, removing the tank to figure out a whole lotta things that are hidden. Turns out the fuel filter and fuel line were so old, I had to borrow the breather tube that goes to the air box, to put it back together. I had installed a few bolts and clamps that weren't there before, but the breather tube had never been connected to the housing, so figured no biggie. I use the bike for primary transpo, so rain, cold a couple spills, all have taken its toll. It started getting worse gas mileage, causing me to run out of gas sooner. I rarely run it to empty, and was really put out when I drove maybe 45 miles and it started acting like it was running out of gas as I arrived at my job. Deceleration it wanted to die, but when I'd give it more throttle, it bogged hard. I've had that happen right as I was about to run out of gas. Feathered the throttle, filled the tank, issue resolved. I knew I wasn't running out of gas, but thought the fuel filter was finally clogging, or sumpin. I went straight to a gas station, 1 gallon brought it up almost full. The bike ran better, until I arrived home...45 miles away. It was also freezing cold, so I didn't know if that might be it. I replaced the fuel filter a couple days later, (DErn tank was nearly full, so I waited) and put the breather hose back to its rightful place. Man, the bike ran so much better, without having to choke it for a long time, even the throttle response was noticeably improved. That was short lived, as I have spent the past few days using the choke to get moving, while playing with the throttle to keep from killing the engine. When I took the air cleaner box off, it liked it much better, and I didn't have the same issue as with it on. Or, at least not as much. I decided it might be spark plugs, which it definitely needed spark plugs, but that accelerator pump thing kept coming to mind. Thinking maybe it's not pulling the gas with the air cleaner box all buttoned up and clogged, or maybe I positioned the fuel line wrong.... Sheesh! I still haven't taken the carbs apart, as I've been effing with trying to get a little brush out of a cylinder, that I was using to clean the threads of a spark plug hole with. I don't wanna take the head off, I don't wanna!!! Anyway, the couple vids I've watched so far have helped clear up a whole lotta wondering what the! All the muck and guck has finally clogged up the jets of the carb, eh? A bike is supposed to be fun! I love fixen things, and learning, but I've been stranded for a couple days now, and I know this bike needs a whole lot more tlc than just cleaning the carbs. ugh! Thanks for all ya do. I'll keep watchin! Tim

Cody, thanks for another great video!! This helped me immensely on my Bandit 400 project. I have been chasing a dead #3 cylinder and played with the carbs a bunch. I was unsure whether it was a fuel or a spark problem. This morning I drained the float bowls, pulled the air filter and gave the motor some hits of starter fluid. She fired on all 4 cylinders which I was able to measure with my IR temp gun. Success!!! Guess it's time to re-watch your carb videos. Thanks again:):):)

They seem easier to understand then most people make it seem. I am an Automotive diag tech and when I have a fuel delivery issue I actually use propane to idle the vehicles into the shop. This would be if you don't have starter fluid to play with.

Thanks. This was a helpful video. I have a 1975 Honda CB750 that's a bit of a cold starter. First ride of the day I pull the choke up and hit the ignition. It starts fine, but I have to keep my hand on the throttle giving the bike just a little bit of gas to keep it running until it's warmed up. If I don't use the throttle to keep the RPM's around 1000 - 1200, it'll fall below 800 and cut off. A few seconds after staring it I'll turn off the choke and the RPM's always go up a bit, which confuses me. After a 3 or 4 minutes of warming up, the bike runs and idles great, right around 1200rpm. A lot of people have told me it's normal for these older Honda's to be cold starters, but the RPM's increasing as I turn off the choke doesn't make sense to me. Does that seem normal? I'm new to motorcycles and trying to learn the basics of how things work.

I purchased a CB450SC. Been getting it back to operating condition. Bike would come off idle and stall. Restricted airflow into the airbox, and it would throttle up, but still had issues. Took the carbs out and cleaned, but still had the same problem. One side spark plug had a white spark, other side could not see anything. Swapped plugs, same result. Tested coil, was a bit out of spec in the book. Ordered a new cool, but still not 100% confident this will be the fix.

In the tumb nail pic of this vid your cb has an additional tube between the carb and the pods. Do you have a vid on what difference they make and the design of them. I have dialed mine in with you recommended starting point of jet sizing for pods. Just battling a bit, I do understand they are tricky to get right. Dose the extra tube iron out issuse and make the bike sing. Thanks fir you time. Tim in NZ
