Seems like the float was sticking. It would run for about minute and then stop and there was a strong odor of gas. I'll rebuild it and save it. I was looking to buy a used "Stump Machine" stump grinder and kind of wanted to go through it and replace certain parts. These grinders go for about 2-3000 for the size I found and the owner said I could have it for 250.00. The grinder only had 117.5 operating hours on it, so I'm thinking "could be a deal". I cleaned out the fuel tank, installed a carb, new inline gas filter, air filter and a new spark plug. Second pull and she roared to life and maintained a strong idle. I live in the Sierra's in Northern California's gold country and due to the bark beetle infestation, a lot of trees are getting cut down. I'm the only one around my area with a stump grinder and my good friend is probably one of the best tree cutters/arborists in California, so there's work 'o plenty. Thanks again for the video.

Sounds like you got quite a deal! After everything I've done with mine, remnants of the original problem still remain, running fine and then, just dying. The difference is, it takes much longer, up to an hour of running before it happens, then it's consistent, like every few minutes. I keep thinking it's heat related, but why does it run so long initially? I always have fresh gas in it, still somewhat mystified.

@@heliflyer7 I have the same problem with it stalling after running for awhile. I thought it acted like vapor lock. I just bought a new gas cap and I will take the carb off with the help of your video and check it all out. I had to remove the valve cover to get the spark plug out. Now to get a new valve cover gasket. Anyway, I hope my efforts solve the problem. Thanks for your video.

I have tried completely removing my gas cap thinking the same thing, but to no avail. Please let me know if you find a solution, thanks!

@@heliflyer7 I even drilled out the two little holes in the cap, but that didn't seem to help. I did find some relief by barely putting the cap on even to have it vibrate off often. I still think it is some kind of vapor lock. I'll let you know what if I have any success.

If it's a screw with a spring on it you're referring to, it's called the Pilot Screw.

Black on the piston sounds like carbon build-up, as if it was running too rich. Hopefully, someone else has some ideas.

You're correct, felt pretty bad about that. Went back later and did it, still didn't help.
