My classic car is a 1959 Deville Coupe, a very simple to fix car. No computers and the good old carburetor. I still prefer classic cars and carburetors, just because of style and simple engineering.

I just took out the whole efi system and car computer out of my 1988 box crown vic and switching to a carburator. A carburator setup is way better than efi. With a carburator I don't have to worry about spending $1000's of dollars to program every modification and you don't have to worry about the emissions in the computer system wiping out your horsepower bringing it back down to stock.

Hi Dave Keonig, I can say that I’ve not heard that one before! Considering that the throttle plates are closed at an idle, you don’t have enough air speed to even talk about velocity at that point. At idle these throttle plates are cracked open JUST enough to allow a minimal amount of air in so the motor will idle. Now, with that being said there are other factors to consider when talking about idle speed; things such as engine size, ignition timing, camshaft size, etc.

So how does spreadbore compare to EFI in terms of mileage and street use? My project is a 327cc '67 Impala. I'd like to be able to merge with the freeway but don't need tons of power all the time. Leaning towards EFI, but if spreadbore can get me the same mpg that sounds cheaper and easier than replacing the whole intake and adding a computer

Port rail injection is incredible! Carbs have there place but Port Fuel injection is So precise the engine can run a much higher compression ratio, and much more ignition advance that is constantly controlled without detonation! You advance the timing too much on a high compression carbureted engine and you will find busted pistons,Etc! It is what it is.

my name is jason,i work for anteck automotive,i am currently working on a blended intake systen i guess you could call it.my series 2 ef xr8 is stock apart from the 347 crank and rod set fitted by the original owner.i am removing the factory intake manifold upper and lower halves,to be replaced by a square bore single plane manifold.this will be drilled and tapped for the factory injectors and a fuel rail of some description.i plan to modify a 780 vac sec,ford type holley,by completely blocking off the primary venturi's fuel supply.by removing the choke flap and shaft linkages etc,i can make up ducting to seal off the choke horn and connect to the airflow meter,thereby using primary barrels of the carby as the throttle body for the eec5 efi system.by filing the throttle shaft at the choke linkage to the same shape and size of the t.p.s.i can fabricate a simple plate to mount the tps units(my xr8 is auto) and screw the plate to where the choke was located.to use the idle air control valve,i will be fabricating a bracket to mount it remotely and simple fittings and hoses to connect to primary venturies above and below the throttle plates.when the revs build to the point that the factory airflow meter becomes a restriction, the secondaries of the vac sec will begin to open, thereby supplementing the engines airflow demand.by having the secondaries fueled as normal,with correct jetting and power enrichment valve sizing and flow rates, the o2 sensor shouldnt even notice that there is anything different,if the secondaries are a bit rich,the ecu will pull some fuel flow from the injectors to maintain emmisions within a legal range,if the secondaries are too lean then the ecu may be able to correct this at the injectors as well.then there is the interesting tuning twist by way of fuel types.by completely isolating the secondaries off the carb,there is no reason why you couldnt run a totally different fuel from a second fuel tank.maybe methanol,or e85,for the secondaries,then there is the option of lpg for the primaries in dual fuel cars like my xr8,imagine,premium and lpg on the primaries,and e85 on the secondaries,should be able to achieve low to no emmisions on a heavily modified engine,now thats having your cake and eating it to.

@Nanaehhco45
@Nanaehhco45 3 жыл бұрын
The tbi system in those camaros were an awful design. You'll be doing yourself a favor in getting rid of the thing and have a carb, but the LO3 was a very restrictive engine to begin with. If u really want to keep the 305, put on better flowing heads, a better camshaft, and a intake manifold that'll match your heads, and that will bolt onto a 50mm modified tbi system, edelbrock sniper, or even better, a super ram efi! Carbs are awesome though, but a properly tuned efi would exceed a carb.... it's just 10x the price of a decent carb. I've seen 305 engine pump out 400hp, or up to 450hp with a 334 stroker kit, although you're better off buying a built 350, or a 383.

It's not a carb. It's a throttlebody with two injectors. The Carb will squirt a stream of gas, and the throttlebody injectors will have a spray or mist. The spray from the injectors will atomize much better and have a much cleaner and complete burn. I wouldn't do a carb conversion on a truck with a throttlebody.

My experience and test have shown time and time again that a carb will always make the most horsepower and fuel injection will always give best fuel mileage if both systems are tuned to their maximum potential.
@cliaremkeavney7639
@cliaremkeavney7639 7 жыл бұрын
Chan Raxter what fuel injection are you comparing to? Sequential multipoint direct injection like on most European. Will always give more power and tuneability than a carb ever could. Especially on a turbo or supercharged engine. They are timed to ignition timing and injected next to the spark plug in top of the head usually. This allows more fuel to be injected whilst getting a complete burn due to better atomisation of the fuel and better mixing with the air as the air can "swirl" with the fuel

Chan Raxter i see. so not what I'm on about then as its a bit more than just a bolt on. how many injectors you compare to? you can get 2 injectors before butterfly valve. fuel injection before the throttle body probably will give a slight improvement in some cars at altitude though

Would the old small valve econo heads return better fuel economy when installed on an EFI engine? Thanks.
@fuji302
@fuji302 2 жыл бұрын
No. There’s a lot that goes into fuel economy and those old heads are terrible for economy. You need more throttle input to achieve any power. They add weight, their combustion chamber design isn’t designed to make the most of the combustion process. Those heads were designed to try to reduce emissions. If you want the best economy possible you need to reduce the overall weight of the engine and reduce the weight of the rotating mass. Good aluminum heads with modern combustion chambers, small roller cam with light weight (spring tension) valve springs, single roller timing chain,light weight rods and pistons, 9.0:1 minimum compression, MSD ignition with big wires and good old basic copper plugs, a good basic aluminum dual plane intake, a single snorkel air cleaner with a connection to a heat riser to take hot air from around the exhaust manifold and a 195 degree thermostat with electric fan. These things will help reduce fuel consumption.

None of my fuel injected cars start as fast in the winter as my carbureted ones. In fact if my injected cars don't crank very fast they will not start in Minnesota. My carbureted engines will start even if they crank slowly. The injected ones need some cranking time for the computer to set itself up to give the proper fuel mixture which wastes some battery power. I can pump my carbureted cars before I start to crank the motor which gives them an advantage in starting. Otherwise your statements are are accurate. (Mechanic for 44 years.)

I thought the main difference between carburetor and fuel injection is fuel delivery; like carburetors have mechanical fuel pump (driven by the camshaft), whereas fuel injection has electric fuel pump.

It could also be an issue with the secondaries. They may require adjustment. That bog occurs when it gets too much fuel and not enough air. The accelerator pump could also be at fault. A stock fuel pump should have no problem supplying that engine (I have a similar setup on my 85) but if the pump is going out that may be an issue.

Peter Kapica in all honesty its a silly idea, your going back in time as summit racing said, plus your probably loosing power and the cost would be alot more than you expect... its better to opt with EFI because of the lower cost and the ability it has over a carb. usally these days v8 muscle cars that are dedicated to the theme have carbs, and old school cars that dont need to be modded at all. Good luck

Hi mate, people bag carbies and EFI alike, both have their upsides and down. Carbies are very affordable, the biggest problem people run into is running either too big or too small a carburettor for their application, or buying a used carburettor that has been modified to suit another vehicle. Either case will lead to disappointment. Both systems are reliable, but different. Carbies can give trouble in extreme cold or with large variances in altitude. EFI can stop a car with a dead battery where a simple push-start may have sufficed with a carburetted one. Either can be fixed with relatively simple tools - a laptop for the EFI and a few jets and a screwdriver for the carby. Like I said, they're just different. Most stock, out-of-the-box carburettors are quite good if sized correctly. Ask around and see who has fitted what. Lean to the smaller size if possible (eg 600cfm instead of 750). My daily driver (245ci 6cyl Chrysler Valiant) is topped with a Holley 465 Street Avenger and required almost no modification at all - I literally bolted it on and it idled, ran and drove quite well. Even got good economy; 20mpg @ 65mph on a non-overdrive 3spd transmission. Bang for the buck? Yes indeed! EFI is a great system and comes in several forms, most likely will be throttle-body systems for the average installer as of this date. Great things but they do require technology to tune, although many are now self-tuning to a certain extent. You still need to get them set up properly and know what you are doing to really dial them in to a specific configuration, but after that they're like a carby - set and forget. For my money I will still use carburetted engines as they are simple, cost-effective and easily fixed in the event of something going wrong. I generally do not travel with the equipment needed for sorting EFI, but do travel with a spare set of jets, powervalve and basic tools for the Holley in my vehicle. Both are unlikely to break down if looked after but that's the point - you want to be covered if they do! The best money to spend in any setup is an AFR gauge. Mine is from Innovate and was very simple to set up and calibrate, and was invaluable in calculating jet and valve changes to my vehicle. What I thought was a rich cruise was actually bang on stoich, and my slightly hesitant acceleration (I thought stumbling rich) was actually leaning out on kickdown. The gauge makes things easy and was $200 including sensor and computer. Best of both worlds, perhaps?

What's the difference between a 4150 and 4160 carb?
@SummitRacing
@SummitRacing 9 жыл бұрын
Hi *****, A 4150 has a metering block on both the front & rear of the carb with interchangeable jets. A 4160 has a metering block on the front but only has a thin metering plate inside the rear fuel bowl. If you need to change fuel delivery to the rear (4160), you’ll need to buy a new plate or a metering block conversion kit and jets! Let us know if you have any additional questions. HOW HARD IS IT TO SWITCH FROM A FUEL INJECTED TO A CARB??
@SummitRacing

Hi Jody Hebert, Well, it really depends on the vehicle you are working with. There are systems on the market today such as the MSD Atomic that makes it as easy as it can be. Take a look at this system, it’s a good one.www.summitracing.com/search/department/air-fuel-delivery/part-type/fuel-injection-systems/brand/msd-ignition/product-line/msd-atomic-ls-efi-fuel-injection-systems?N=4294951509%2B4294925975%2B400122&SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Default&autoview=SKU If you need more info, please give us a call on the tech hotline. 1-330-630-0240

If you have a classic vehicle and you hardly drive it, I would advise FE. The carbs gunk up after being parked a few months. You don't go through the same with FE. Keep your tank full if your gas has ethanol because ethanol attracts moisture.
@briang4470
@briang4470 3 жыл бұрын
Fuel injection is not safe from fuel gunking up, mater of fact injectors tend to stick open when old varnish gas gets ran through them and can cause injectors to hang open and flood or even hydro lock the engine, no fuel system is safe from old varnish gas or ethanol gas.

@@briang4470 I own two 87 f150's, one is a carb and the other is Efi. When I don't drive the Efi for a few weeks I never have issues with the truck starting and I think they're designed to go well over 50,000 to 100,000 miles without issues. On the other hand, my carb gets gunk within a month or few weeks of not starting it.
@briang4470
@briang4470 3 жыл бұрын
@@refugiorod if your carb gets full of trash and gunk in as little as a few weeks, then you have some other issue like contaminated fuel,dirty fuel lines or fuel tank, or the rubber lines are disintegrating. Carbureted vehicles especially with todays fuel will evaporate dry after a few days to a week so when you come back to them you should only have to crank for a few seconds to refill the carb and then it should crank right up with a pump or 2 of the peddle. I have worked on tons of carbureted vehicles over the years and if everything is clean and in good condition, you should have zero problems unless the vehicle sits for a few years with super stale gas. I have seen fuel injected vehicles have injectors stick wide open if ran with stale old nasty fuel so both systems do have problems but none of them are bad, carburetors get a bad name from people having other issues or not understanding how they work or how to fix them.
@refugiorod
@refugiorod 3 жыл бұрын
@@briang4470 Ethanol is the culprit here. Back then, regular gas never had issues with gunk. They're video's out there of old cars still turning on after many years of being parked, no problemo with the old gas, they still turn on. It's the ethano. Ethanol attracts moisture.
@briang4470
@briang4470 3 жыл бұрын
@@refugiorod That is absolutely NOT TRUE. Old gas would turn into this very thick and stick brown molasses like substance known as varnish. Trust me I have cleaned out hundreds of old motorcycle and car gas tanks that hadn't been drained in over 20-30 years, it's some super nasty stuff that will not run. Yes ethanol does attract moisture but that is not the reason for all your problems. There are still thousands of carbureted cars,trucks,motorcycles, and boats and 99% of them are still using ethanol fuel with no problems. Ethanol does cause issues if let sit for extended periods of time like 6 months or longer but so does ethanol free fuel. If you dont believe me go fill a gas can with 1 gallon of ethanol fuel and vent it and then go get another can and fill it with 1 gallon of ethanol free fuel and give them about 6 months to 1 year of sitting and see what happens. The ethanol jug will mostly evaporate but there will still be some varnish and stinky old fuel left that will not run and the ethanol free can will be mostly full but will have a very thick and nasty varnish in it that will not run.

Carbs superior to EFI With EFI, you are complicating fuel delivery with synchronized timing. With carbs, as long as your intake is intact, you're good. With EFI, if you have a bad injector, a cylinder could run lean and you might not know it (casually ignore CEL that is constantly on for trivial reasons). This will cook a valve or worse, blow a pistion!!! EFI claims to have a monopoly on servomechanisms that optimize AFR. It DOESN'T. Even without a feedback loop to optimize, it's simple to just have an AFR guage and monitor it manually. The benefit to doing this with a carb setup is you can trust the reading from a single sensor that monitors a bank of cylinders more for reasons mentioned above. It is a KNOWN or GIVEN that you have even fuel/air distribution as long as you have the proper intake/carb setup which you have to check ONCE. As long as you don't have catastrophic structural failure of your intake, you're good! EFI can run one cylinder rich or without ANY FUEL and you just have to guess which cylinder is acting up based on a sensor reading. With a feedback mech on carbs, you can just adjust the carb. Phase jitter/harmonic issues at higher RPMs with EFI. Again, due to having to time fuel delivery with EFI, at higher RPM the injectors might not be able to cram enough pulses into a small time window in order to deliver the desired amount of fuel. Basically the pulse and flow rate of the injectors become a bottleneck. Other issues are -- what if the injector pulsewidths aren't evenly divisible by the time domain constraint -- basically you are forced ot waste fuel or run rich. Ironic because that's a common criticism of carbs.

I once calculated 57mpg on the drive from Boston, Mass to Portsmouth, NH with my car over weighed. Two, I never have problems starting my car in the winter. The vehical is from Colorado. Three, I never once heard from any mechanic that EFI is more fuel efficiant than a carburetor. And four, I am looking for a replacement part that screws into the back of my carb. Nobody can even tell me what it is. I know it is not an oxygen sensor. It has one wire. On the end that screws into the carb, which seems too small to fit, it has a spring loaded rod with a brass disc on the end. I have done many searches and found only the part attached to a whole carb that was being sold. What is this part?!

EFI is more fuel efficient. Plenty of evidence to show that, however there is no evidence showing a 1985 escort getting 40 to 50 mpg. If it was a diesel engine then I would agree with you. Now if your going slower than highway speeds I can see the 40 to 50 mpg but there is no way that thing is getting 40 to 50 at high way speeds.
