A Basic study every beginning classical guitarist should learn. First very slow and gradually increase speed to try and match this. Great challenge. Don't rush the learning and set realistic goals. S-L-O-W D-O-W-N . Set the tempo speed to 0.25 see how to start!

It's not a 'Basic Study'; it's as basic as you play it. It's graded as level 4. Instead, strive to play it as a Level 8 study as David does. A couple of points here. This is arguably most suitably played with free stroke, and one of the main challenges is to control string noise with your thumb movement and micro-movements in your left hand. This includes the base notes of the scale runs AND the strong string noises that are produced. For the latter, you can ignore it and play fast over this issue, but it sounds muddy and unclean; you will always know that you didn't achieve mastery here and stay in Grade 4 for the rest of your life even if you play Grade 8 pieces. It's complicated by the fact that you often run to the first string, so you need to make sure to get a good tone from avoidig overstretching the hand when you plant your thumb on the base note. It's a bit of a tradeoff but the thumb should not be glued down in any way to ensure a natural hand position. The second point is the economy of motion in your left hand and consistent fingering in your right. It's really important to be precise and efficient in your fingering here and always alternate. If you don't have a good teacher to help you through this ... now is the time to get one.

Thanks. . I think they're fantastic studies.. among the most useful. Especially when you play slower and really watch each technique rather than glossing over each one.. that's when you really start to improve.

I finally got round to learning this - and there is more to it than meets the eye. A great piece after initial warm up and full of technical elements that have really improved my scale fluency. I was struggling with some aspects but I bought David's instructional video which I can highly recommend - full of great ideas. Thanks for doing this! This i think is the best version I have come across. The close ups are great and the pointers on how to damp the strings is really good.

Thank You! Just a thought: 'romantic' pieces (even didactic etudes such as this one) generally carry the endorsement of some interpretative challenge for the player, and despite the alternation of open strings with stopped ones in this etude, as 'canonically' implied in most of its published scores, an extra challenge would be to explore consistent stopped string playing (with concomitant positional shifts) which might go better? with its interpretative rendition.
@davidjaggs

Interesting thought Wilfred. I think we can always look deeper into the music and find more challenges. When to stop?!! Thanks for your feedback.

David a suggest combining some of these videos of entires opuses into long videos so people either have the choice to watch them separately or together. I think for you it would be a really good idea as you are a fantastic performer and HAVE recorded some of the most important opuses for Classical Guitar students.

It was a while ago now, Tony... I think I paid attention to the fingerings of the original, especially when it was the purpose of the study, but I'm sure there were times when I used my own too.

Hello, it is me again sir. Can i ask you, if it doesn't bother, how much did it take for you to get to this level of mastery of this piece? (Im just curious). It's taking me way longer than i thought hahaha (and I'm not aiming even close to your interpretation). Definitely harder than the next 3
@davidjaggs
@davidjaggs 9 ай бұрын
Hi, it is harder than the following 3.. once reach a certain level on the guitar it doesn't take as long to learn these pieces. If you're early stage then there will be new techniques that you haven't used before. At a later stage you can apply these techniques and master the piece quickly. Also, it's an ongoing thing, you can always improve things, speed, evenness, tone etc. It would take me two or three days to get this piece working, but I'd expect a beginner to take months maybe. I hope this answers your question.

Staccato!!!👎
@davidjaggs

According to Brian Jeffrey staccato in the 1850s meant something quite different to today's staccato. Nethertheless your opinion is just as important as anyone else so thanks for your feedback!

DPJFILMS "Staccato is a jerky performance of melody or chord sounds. Staccato is usually indicated with a dot above or below notes. To muffle the sounds of the guitar, just put the fingers of his right hand on the strings. The faster the strings are muffled with the fingers of the right hand, the more staccato will be opened" Matteo Carcassi.

Jackson Jackson Staccato!! Loved it! Isn't it great that as humans we are individuals and creative, expressive artists and musicians/guitarists, and don't have to fit into other people's molds? Isn't it great that we can PLAY THEM AS WE FEEL THEM??? Isn't it great that if we feel the piece as stacatto, we can express it that way with our hands and fingers without fear of criticism from others who have not even bothered to post their OWN rendition of the piece on Y'tube?
