Growing up in New Zealand the Falcon coupes were pretty common. If you couldn't afford a Mustang you got one of these instead. You could still pick them up for reasonable prices in the early Nineties. All the classics went a bit mad in the early 2000s, then settled after 2008 crash, but by that stage Falcon coupes had become rare. They are effectively gone from NZ now, I think the Aussies came and got a few of them then the Americans caught on. You can see them at car shows but they hardly ever come up for sale, when they do they cost an order of magnitude more than a Mustang.

The XD's looks still mesmerise me to this day and I first noticed them in 1980 as a seven year old. I was astounded such a radically modem looking car emitted the same sound as the previous models like the XB. Fun fact: the development of the XD seen here chasing the XB began in 1973 as the XB was introduced.
@davidcarr2649
@davidcarr2649 Жыл бұрын
The planning and development of the XD began in 1976 when Ford Australia decided to use the floorpans of the XC to base the new all Australian built Falcon chassis upon. The XD shares only the floorpans in the (smaller on the outside, but just as big on the inside) chassis. Apart from the floorpans, the XD is a whole new car. Of course, there were a few shared items otherwise like, rear vision mirrors, indicator and wiper stalks, plus a few more cost saving bits. There's even parts that are used in all 7 generations of the Falcon 1960 - 2016 and are easily interchangeable.
@jamesfrench7299
@jamesfrench7299 Жыл бұрын
@@davidcarr2649 I must have read it in Wikipedia, although 1976 might have been when they knew what the final design of the car would be like but 73 was the absolute genesis of the future model project without having any idea what the final product would comprise. The XD brought two innovations for an Aussie car, one that would be the norm for the future, plastic fuel tank and moulded plastic bumper for the front clip which enhanced the Grenada based look. The Granada looks wrong to my eyes with it's steel bumper. Yet people keep thinking Holden was the bees knees when they were generally behind Ford in design and usually played catch up if at all. Plastic bumpers, alloy head engine, over head cam sixes, sixes that remained home grown where Holden used one from another car maker altogether getting unearned praise and then relying on an American GM division for the 3800 V6, yet claim to be Aussie as Aboriginal art! Ford left them in the dust for being Australian.

@@jamesfrench7299 just about any piece of Aboriginal art that you will see is created using acrylic paint. It replicates their traditional drawings that were stencil based, or drawn in sand. That and rock etching, and many other techniques. Please don’t mistake my comment for racism, I have seen genuine art in person with my own eyes, and it is mind blowing, all I’m saying is that much of what folks consider to be aboriginal art is of a technique that only dates back 50 years or so.

I'd love to know where they found a base model 6 banger XB coupe for this, pretty much all of them would have had V8 transplants by 94, also a bit weird to see a bog stock "police pack" XD that long after production (most got stripped for parts pretty early). @@xpusostomos You see it that way, I don't and I used to admire the XE's slightly left of field frontal appearance. It represented advances but the XD has the prettiest front by far and I find the taillights more pleasing and in keeping with the overall design. The Grenada mark 2 continued with the same styling beyond the XE I believe, even though it dates two years before the XD's debut.

Yep the 79-81 (XD model) Falcon was loosely based on the Mk2 Granada, even shared a few common parts (headlights, some of the exterior trim and the long wheelbase LTD used the Granada rear lights. I've owned 2 of them previosly (and an XB wagon).
@commodorenut
@commodorenut Жыл бұрын
It was ford global styling at the time. While many cues came from Europe (the earlier XC Fairmont is a lot like the mid 70s Granada too) the side pressing style and swage lines on the XD were also shared with the Fox body Fairmont/LTD in the US. Even the early Fox mustangs had a similar swage. XF tail lights and the Fox mustang update tail lights are also similar in style too.
@bradevans7935
@bradevans7935 Жыл бұрын
@@commodorenut XD-XH commercials used the XA-XC tailgate and tray inner panels with the updated exterior styling. XD-XF wagons used the Fox-body Fairmont tailgate. All part of keeping development costs down where possible, just like they used Mercury Comet front guards for the XP Falcon, and 'compact Fairlane' suspension and steering parts to beef up the XL and XM when early XK's were found wanting under Aussie conditions.
