Ah, that makes so much sense! I was wondering why I wasn't getting the texture finish I wanted with the little kits I bought off Etsy, and it's because all the wool is roving.

Yes, lots of kits are roving and it's just that bit harder to felt, there's a lady whose channel is wool felt xi and she uses roving and does amazing pieces so it's possible but it's carded is my preferred wool, thanks for watching and commenting x

I really wish that I'd found your video when I first started needle felting! I just couldn't understand how people made such lovely animals. I was struggling with tops and merino roving and it was so frustrating. Of course eventually I discovered carded wool and I was away and my felting life was made so much easier! I do love your videos. Thank you!

Very informative! I got back into the craft recently and splurged a lot on supplies and materials lol. I did try some “core wool” after learning its good for base/cores and I liked how much faster it was. However-I started my current project of my oc (original character) who is a purple (cheshire themed) cat, and so I used the finer wool for coloration which was relatively fine. But then later I’d notice white spots and it can be a bit annoying to fill them in. So I just recently ordered some carded and bulky wools! I got a similar purple in these wools so next time I want to experiment with it and see if it works better as a base. I also got a couple of other natural colors to test out. I think I’ll use white for projects that are already white or mostly white, unless I intentionally want some white to show through haha I’m glad you can get stuff like the carded wools in an array of colors because some of my planned projects and quite colorful as opposed to natural colors

It is so helpful to hear your descriptions and cautions. E.g. the applications one will likely have for the different types (preparations) of wool. To help us/me not UNintentionally choose a material that COULD be used but will be more work to get a certain/intended result.

Philippa, I'm still having trouble with carded vs uncared, roving... some vendors dont seem to know the difference! And for a Beard of a Gnome, for example, I need roving or tops, correct? For inside of bodies, I need carded in a batt, correct? I'm still confused!

For inside of an item check out my core wool video. For suppliers see video below and check out comments as I don't use US suppliers but others have recommended. In America I think roving can be called either so go for carded roving or roving batts. If in doubt just call the supplier and have a chat. You can still use roving or tops, I just card them myself (see carding video) but it takes longer to felt x kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j5uBibupqr6mmmw.html

I think the green rope and the merino rope are just both roving but the merino has such a long staple and is so fine. The green one is probably corriedale which has more crimp to it. Sliver is generally the term for other types of fibre, like the silk blend you had. The variegated brown one is gorgeous, I use this kind all the time as I love multi colours. carded together they give a great speckled look to firmly felted pieces. I've never had a problem with them getting firm. I work on a much smaller scale though, miniature bears, bunnys, cats etc. :)
@feltsbyphilippa

Wools are so varied and roving can be the confusing one for beginners. Once carded it's much easier for a beginner but doesn't always come carded. Carded wool felts so much faster and is the best to start with. Over here slivers are rope like not batts in presentation, so many variations it's no wonder beginners get confused. @@feltsbyphilippa I have no idea what that is, I will look it up. 😁 But I don't have a lot of money, so must do the most with cheaper wool. But maybe it's a good investment to buy good 'stuffing' wool sometimes

Are these types of wools something that you can go into your local yarn store for?

Very useful thank you! I'm just about to start out, mainly as part of an artpiece i'm making (For the visually impaired) where I need to create very fluffy cloud. What wool would you recommend for this? And whee to buy it from? (I'm also UK based)
@feltsbyphilippa
@feltsbyphilippa 3 жыл бұрын
A simple carded wool will create the fluff but is not too soft, not itchy but there are softer wools, anything merino is very soft but takes longer to felt. I use World of Wool, UK, online. Just give them a call and ask what they recommend, especially if you need a really soft wool like a silk, they are very helpful. Glad you like the video and thanks for watching, hope you project goes well x

I don't because I sell my makes but people have. If it felts then definitely use it but I believe lots of fluff can drop out of it which is not so nice, the fibres are really short x

Thank you, you have to try local farms or maybe Etsy. There are Facebook groups for farmers who sell their own wool, we have a UK one so you'll probably have one for your country. I firmly felt jointed bears and they are very hardy. If felting is done very firmly they are safe for older children. I wouldn't expect anything handmade to be baby safe though. My son used to play with his like action figures! :)

I can see both sides on a busines level: it's a lot safer to state that the felt animal's are not for children because it could be a liability, "if" something happens! On the other side a family member or friend marking one for a child, you would know what age and how the child will play with it. Thank you both for your advice!!
